Bears beat out Father Ryan for title

by RICHARD ROBERTS Banner Sports Editor 4 hours ago | 130 views | 0 | 6 | |

BRADLEY CENTRAL sophomore TJ Hicks is awarded two points for a takedown of Father Ryan's Christian Simpson in the 106-pound championship match at the Bradley Invitational Wresting Tournament Saturday at Jim Smiddy Arena. In the battle of No. 1-ranked wrestlers, Hicks claimed a 7-2 decision to win the weight class title to help the Bears hold off the Fightin’ Irish for the team championship. Midway through the semifinals of the 24th annual Bradley Invitational Wrestling Tournament, Bears coach Ben Smith began to get the feeling his team could win it all.

The third-ranked (AAA) Bears did not betray Smith's feelings wrestling to the championship over second-place Father Ryan, which is the top-ranked D-II squad in the state, by a final score of 255-222.5.

“We won and I feel good about that. We've progressed every week we have competed and we set a goal as a team to do that,†said and exhausted Smith. “Based on the results I saw from the Cleveland Duals last weekend, I felt like we could win. We set a goal as a team to win this tournament. I didn't know if we could. I didn't realize we could until about half way through the semifinals. It always feels good to achieve a goal.â€

Etowah (Ga.) finished third with 149.5 points, Commerce (Ga.) was fourth with 131 and Tullahoma rounded out the top five with 128. A total of 30 teams participated in the event.

“We had five (wrestlers) in the finals, Father Ryan had seven but seven in the wrestle-backs. That's where we won the tournament. They had kidsout, but the margin of victory was pretty significant,†said Smith.

All three Bears ranked No. 1 in the state won their weight division. TJ Hicks won for the 106-pound championship for the Bears, Toribio Navarro finished in first at 113 and Knox Fuller wrestled to a championship at 126.

Hunter Parker earned a second-place finish for Bradley at 132 and fifth-ranked Brett Brown was runner up at 195.

Sixth-ranked Donnie Beyer took third at 145 and DJ Adams fought to a third-place finish at 285.

Third-ranked Ryan McElhaney took fourth place for the Bears at 120, Stephen Scott was fifth at 138, Caleb Adkins was sixth at 152, Jack Bandy took sixth at 160 and Corey Gatlin finished in sixth-place at 170.

“The thing I'm most proud of is our conditioning was good. I felt like our effort and our fight was good. We didn't have any blow ups or any uncharacteristic issues. On top of that, all my kids wrestled at or above their seeds,†said a pleased Smith. “The 12 that placed, two weren't supposed too and the other 10 that were seeded finished at or above their seed. That tells me we are wrestling over our heads and getting better.â€

Smith said the tournament gives his team a feel for where it stands at this point in the season before the second-half sweat and toil begins.

“Here's what we’re capable of, here's where we are at,†Smith said of the tournament win. “In the conditioning phase, we have not even really begun to touch that yet. The harder practices are coming, the grinds are coming. But as far as just the mind set of believing we can beat teams that have been beating us for a couple of years now, that's coming. The ‘We are Bradley’ mentality that I felt like we use to have when I wrestled and coached here, that's what we're trying to get back. This helps us.â€

Notre Dame's Luke Mullins was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

Tyler Barber, of Stewart Creek, had the most pins with six.

The Best Match Award went to 113-pound championship bout where Navarro nipped Raymond Eason of Father Ryan by a 9-8 margin.

The varsity Bears will have a bit of a rest while the junior varsity returns to the mat Monday.

    • It is what it is. Sorry DFL.
    • One of the biggest loosing teams in Mid-State are the Macon County Tigerettes. I have noticed that the roster is smaller than in the years past. All the senior's have quit. We have a great group of Jr High players coming up. I sure hope they don't loose them, like they have lost so many others this year. With this young group of girls coming up, a weaker district, they should have no problem going to State.
    • It was updated this season, because I did it.  Linder is the school's all-time leading rusher at 5,156 yards with 2,436 of those coming in 2014.
    • Oh, I’m sure you did. Maybe you heard just a rumor, but considering we have a football practice field and a soccer field that’s frequently used for lacrosse games and practices, I highly doubt it. Let me change that. I know for a fact that didn’t happen.   Glad you finally stopped attacking a bunch of high school students, but still obsessed with the coaching staff for some unknown reason, even though you could name more than three (at most) coaches without looking it up. But now come up with something else.
    • You really mean the Price twin boys and Lyin Larry.
