Gray Simmons was a 4X NAIA National Champion and 3X NCAA D1 National Champion. He was not afforded the opportunity to become a 4X NCAA D1 National Champion because per NCAA rules freshmen were not allowed to compete in varsity competition. The reason that some college coaches are opposed to the lower division wrestlers being allowed to compete in the D1 tournament is that it will be more competition. For some reason most people today are SOFT and are looking for the easy way out of everything.

California is crazy is many ways but they do know how to conduct a state high school wrestling tournament. When you only have one division in a state the size of California you are good if you even make it to the state. Oh, how soon I forget that at one time we only had one division in Tennessee.

Yes from our neighboring state, VA, like Gable no freshman allowed to compete. But the NAIA experience certainly helped...

Gray Simons is considered one of the best technicians of all time. He started early in his high school career under the legendary Coach Billy Martin, Sr. of Granby High School in Norfolk Virginia. He was a state champ there and went on to Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. There Gray won 3 NCAA Titles (No Athlete at the time could wrestle in the NCAA Championships as a freshman) and was OW twice.

Gray in 1960 represented the USA in the Olympics in Freestyle and took 5th during his sophomore year of college
