Baylor Wins D-II Middle/East Region Title - 6 champs

On the strength of six champions among its 14 state qualifiers, Baylor claimed the TSSAA D-II Middle/East Region traditional wrestling title Saturday at McCallie.

 

Baylor had 240.5 points, while runner-up Montgomery Bell Academy had five champs and 196.5 points and host McCallie was third with three champions and 188 points.

 

Fourth place went to Battle Ground Academy (91.5), Franklin Road Academy (31.5) was fifth, followed by Knox Webb (6th, 24.0), Pope John Paul II (7th, 10.0) and St. Andrews-Sewanee (8th, 4.0).

 

* State Traditional: The 53rd annual state traditional tournament is Feb. 13-14 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin.

Feb. 13 – 11 a.m (EST) - championship quarterfinals … 7 p.m. (EST) - championship semis

Feb. 14 – 11 a.m. – consolation finals … 6 p.m. (EST) - championship finals

 

* Region Champs - Baylor champs (6) were Mason Reiniche (126), Michael Murphy (138), Blake Sutherland (160), Cayman Seagraves (170), Ryan Parker (220) and Cooper Reiniche (285).

 

MBA champs (5) were Thomas Bellet (106), Gabriel Elkin (113), Michael Elkin(120), Cole Euverand (182), D’On Cofer (220).

 

McCallie winners (3) were Brock Herring (132), Sam Harrelson (145) and Will Patton (152).

 

1s vs. 2s:  1s won 10 of 13 matchups with No.2s in the finals … a trio of No.2 seeds and a No.4 seed also were crowned champs.

 

No.4 Seed: McCallie Sam Harrelson was a No.4 seed and won the region at 145 … beat a No.1 seed in the semis and No.2 seed in the finals

 

8th Grader Wins: Baylor’s Mason Reiniche scored a takedown and 3-point near fall in the third period to upset senior state champion James Westbrooks (McCallie), 6-1 in the finals at 126 …

Injury? Protection from injury? Gamesmanship?

 

And what happened to McCallie's 106 8th grader (Thomas Sell) who made his debut in the Baylor match?

What I know: There have been some serious injuries to both the Baylor & McCallie teams. With the West Region being completed on Friday (which was stupid to miss classroom time for a tournament that on average would not have more than 8 people per weight classification) it would have been easy to have what you described as "GAMESMANSHIP" when people already knew what the brackets would be before the finals. There were some forfeits in the championship round only to have the wrestler compete in the consolation round.

 

What I don't know: If any of the D2 coaching staffs would partake in "Gamesmanship" at the high school level. If they did participate in "GAMESMANSHIP" I ask the question of what does that teach the kids?

While it is quite understandable to use the regional tournaments to determine qualifiers for state, what sense does it make to have a tournament at all where the top one or two seeds draw byes into the semifinals?

 

My idea is this....I would encourage all the DII coaches to wrestle each kid to the point they qualify, then forfeit out the rest. Send a message to the TSSAA that these two regional tournaments, held in opposite ends of the state, is a colossal waste of time and energy for what is an obvious money grab.

 

Gamesmanship is a choice....simply trying to win without cheating. It is not to be confused with sportsmanship, which is defined by action. There is a great deal of strategy related to the bracketing and seeding process for the individual state tournament. Likely more than we as average fans know.

 

Just eliminate the DII regional altogether. Let each state bracket have 16 entries. Would make for a much better state tournament environment. Seedlings could be argued, but the facts are that to win the title you have to wrestle all the seeds sooner or later anyways.

 

Off my soapbox, but interested in thoughts from all parts of the state.

 

And I still am interested in why two of the potential highlighted finals matches at this regional were forfeits. 138 and 182.

      It was not ACHS at all, they have zero reason to worry about Clinton.  It had to do with a kid (non football player)  that had a charge and appeared in front of the juvenile judge.  The judge saw that the kid was way behind credit wise for his grade and told him to reappear in a month with a plan to graduate.  When the kid reappeared he had more that twice the credits than one month before.  The judge called BS and contacted the school.  That is what started the investigation.  This involves multiple students, but to this point no athletes are involved.

      Good ole Bradley Zulliger. He was a really good QB @ OR. Fun to watch.  Wore #15 and was like a mini Tebow, with the exception of being right handed. He could take a pounding and keep on ticking. Played with a collapsed lung against Powell that year. Tough as nails.

      They should be pretty good in year two for Rang.  Replacing most of the offensive production losing Dozier, Hayward and Rembert , but they're are skill kids in place ready for their shot.  I know I say this every year, but the o line should show improvement after two years in Rang and Kevin Day's weight program.  I still would favor West over Plow and OR come November.  The Rebs will have to grow up a bunch between now and then, and will probably take some lumps along the way with that schedule.  But I predict come playoff time they will be ready.   One of their coaches half joked to me that they could go 5-5 regular season and win the state championship.  Ha ha.
