Soddy Daisy Girls Edge Siegel; Advance to First State Tourney

For the Lady Trojans of Soddy Daisy, history was made at 6:24 Thursday evening as junior Katelynn Coyner’s three-set win at No.4 singles clinched a 4-1 state quarterfinals victory against visiting Siegel at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.

 

“To advance to the state tournament for the first time in school history is great for these girls who have played their hearts out all season,†said first year coach Mike Parker whose team is 17-1 heading to Spring Fling Tuesday for the state semis against defending state champion Ravenwood.

 

Other Trojans who claimed wins were No.1 Olivia Crawley, No.2 Chloe Mitchell and No.5 Adrianna Peckinpaugh. Siegel’s Katie White won at No.3.

 

DecoTurf – Season Turning Point: Soddy Daisy went 3-1 in the prestigious DecoTurf tournament held in Chattanooga in March.

 

“I had no idea what to expect when we entered the tournament and then we lost to Duncan out of Oklahoma (eventual champion) and I was hoping we would not go 0-4 that weekend,†said coach Parker.

 

“Then we won a match, 4-3, late that first night where our doubles teams had to step up and perform under pressure and they did.â€

 

The Trojans won two more matches that weekend to place third in the B Division.

 

“When we entered the tournament I thought we were going to get killed against all those good teams,†said Mitchell who will play volleyball and tennis at Tennessee Wesleyan next school year, “but after we went 3-1 I knew we could have a good season.

 

“That weekend turned out to be the turning point for our season,†she said. “I am so excited that we are going to the state as a team for the first time ever so anything that happens next week (in Murfreesboro) will be icing on the cake.â€
