Future Phenoms Should Forgo Collegiate Wrestling?

Henry Cejudo chose to forego college and train in Colorado Springs for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. He was the youngest ever US wrestler (to the best of my knowledge) to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Now what?

And after he did this (which was an incredible accomplishment), he was unable to even make the team, losing to Nick Simmons, a former collegiate (folkstyle) wrestler. The point of the article is not to suggest that wrestlers can't experience success by focusing primarily on freestyle (they can!). The point is that they don't need to. Moreover, a movement which successfully put all of our phenoms strictly in freestyle, and forgoing collegiate wrestling, would do damage to growing the sport. Collegiate wrestling is central to viewership and excitement in our great sport of wrestling.

"f we, as a country, want to take a step forward onto the mainstage with Russia and Iran then dropping folkstyle all together is the best solution. You can still have collegiate wrestling and it not be folkstyle. Have say 6 greco matches and 6 freestyle matches to make up a dual meet, idk just a thought."

Will never happen. Sorta like trying to get Americans to convert to the metric system.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
