Cheerleaders (again)

Hmmm - well, I can't find the post on the "wrestling cheerleaders", but I agree with who posted it. For the sake of the wrestlers trying to hear their coaches yell moves, etc., I think cheerleaders at a wrestling match just should not be. I agree that it would be nice if the coaches did away with them altogether and just make them managers, or something along that line, then that would fill the Title IX requirement, and put the girls to doing something useful and constructive. No, I'm not sexist, just practical.

JustWrestle, One of the problems with the proportionality application of Title IX is that activities like cheerleading that are made up largely of women are not included in the count. Go to the Title IX section of the message board of tennwrestling.com and scroll down to TITLE IX SOLUTION. Eric LeSher, reporter for Intermat, offered a solution at the Chicago meeting of the Title IX Commission. Number 4 among his recommendations was "Counting cheerleading and other non-NCAA recognized athletes in the equation." I won't take a position on whether or not programs should have wrestling cheerleaders, but I hope this information will increase your resolve to become even more active in your support of the wrestling position in the fight for survival on the college level...and possibly down the road, on the highschool level.

thekeg55, This is my understanding of Title IX and the Wrestling Community's issue with it: Title IX was US Congress' effort back in the '70s to give all participants equal opportunites in institutions that received federal monies. The bottom line, as far as wrestling and some other Olympic sports are concerned, is that Department of Education has elected to tell institutions that if they follow a proportionality prong of the enforcement guidelines that they will be in compliance and will not have to defend themselves against costly and timeconsuming probes by the Department. This prong essentially states that the number of athletes on a campus must reflect the number of students enrolled by gender, i.e., if the student enrollment includes 55% female, then 55% of the athletes on campus must be female. You can readily see how many female athletes it would take just to match the number of football players. Therefore, in order to comply with DOE, administrations elect to eliminate some men's sports, of which, wrestling has been hit the hardest.

thanks dellWare - you certainly did clear things up about Title IX, sorry for my ignorance where that regards Cheerleaders & Title IX. I agree that something needs to be changed regarding proportionality.

Now - I still think cheerleaders just are more of a nuisance than a help. Again, I do apologize to all those cheerleaders out there, but I really think they could serve a better purpose as wrestling managers or something like that. ;)

One solution to the Title IX problem I have been hearing is that the funding should be proportional to the number of athletes in each gender that want to participate in the organized sports at each school. For instance if a school was 55% female and only 15% wanted to participate and the male population was 45% and 30% wanted to participate then the funding would be 66 2/3% male and 33 1/3% female. This may be a better way or not. What do you think?

justwrestle,

Fact of life...boys wrestle harder when girls are watching! I certainly dont claim to know everything about gender relations but i think that this is one of life's indisputable truths. Plus, we arent exactly doing a great job getting a lot of fans and people outside of our sport interested. I think we would be crazy to remove cheerleading. Lets face it, there isnt a whole lot of glamour in wrestling as it is...why remove what little we have.

In my opinion the more people that are involved in the sport of wrestling the more the sport will grow. Cheerleaders have families and friends. That is more support

for the wrestling in a school. Then you have the little brothers and sisters of these cheerleaders that will be exposed to wrestling,(a indirect feeder program). Also it shows to the basketball group and the A.D. that wrestling

has intrest outside the parents of the wrestlers. Bring on the cheerleaders and all who are with them.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
