MESSAGE FOUND ON TENNWRESTLING BOARD....BY oter

Wednesday evening NBC aired a re-run of The West Wing. I was pleasantly shocked when one of the characters broached the subject of Title IX with an accurate characterization of the positions of wrestling and other embattled men's Olympic sports on the college level. The responding character countered with a statistic descriptive of women's numerical advancements since the advent of Title IX. Later a third character, a female, brought up how football numbers threw the whole male / female numbers game out of balance. Character four countered that football brought in the money that supported other sports, the same rhetoric we have heard over and over again. But the encouraging thing is that our position was played out, briefly as it was, accurately on a popular, acclaimed television series before a national audience.

 

Everyone, please do as USA Wrestling, NWCA, Tennessee Wrestling Federation, and others who are in tune with the national scene have been encouraging us to do. Send an email to the address that Louise has provided for us on another post.

 

America has heard and is listening for us to fill in the blanks on the questions they still have. We have the just position on our side. We need to let others know.

Matmaid, Thanks for the URL for emailing the committee who are making a recommendation to President Bush on whether to leave Title IX as it is or whether to amend the application of the law to include the other prongs which in turn will halt the wholesale exclusion of wrestling and other men's sports across the country. Everyone who cares about opportunities for wrestlers on the college level should take the time to send an email asking that the enforcement of Title IX be amended to discontinue the use of proportionality as the sole test of compliance. A brief explanation of your stance on the matter would do the job. However, if you are not up to snuff on the details of the issues, a simple plea to stop the loss of current wrestling opportunities would add just one more voice to our cause of justice and would help those on the committee who are on our side to have just one more voice of support from across America.
