Redballon... keep it up man; you're close to winning "most ignorant on all of Coacht.com". Another ridiculous post, and you may have your coveted award of stupidity. Anyone that knows anything about basketball knows that signing with UTC is a MAJOR deal for a kid, as it is very difficult for any kid to sign at the Division 1 ranks...

Whoa.....you guys are really ganging up on redballoon. I don't think he knows it, but he's partly correct. UTC is a fine school and Lebo is an excellent coach, however, there is a distorted picture being painted in this thread. A fact not mentioned: UTC, Vandy, Miss St and Stanford all sent him mail, but UTC was the only offer. That knocks down most arguments made against redballoon. In recruiting, staffs will mass mail to recruits - first letters are almost always mailed without seeing the kid play. Go to any mid-major school and you will find a roster full of players that were "getting looks" from high majors in high school. Many of them probably got letters from Kentucky, Florida, Arizona, etc, but very few were serious prospects.

I once heard two AAU teammates talking about letters/scholarships and I think this illustrates my point: the first player was bragging how he got a letter from Kentucky and now saying he was on the same level as his teammate. His teammate chuckled and said "Listen, you got a letter from Kentucky, I got a scholarship offer from UK......big difference."

If a player was looked at by a school and didn't receive an offer, does it really matter that he "got a look"? Afterall, he wasn't considered worthy of an offer.

I am in no way on redballoons "side" in this, he has made some ignorant statements - statements I do not want to be associated with, but questions regarding UTC over bigger schools is partly justifiable. If Jenkins was offered a scholly by Stanford and/or Miss St he would then have the opportunity to pick UTC over them, but that was not the case.

Exactly right Gomab...i dont see where anyone can knock signing with UTC. I know of people who have been on the All-State team, averaged over 20 a game, and who didnt get the chance to play at that level. Never seen Jamar play probably wont get to next year either because of family members who are playing plus i will be helping coach at a school. However, remember one thing. Nobody is able rate if a player is overrated like college coaches because that is what makes or breaks them. Most of the time they(the coaches) are not really affected by the hype...one more note...for those of you who think that Gomab makes or breaks these guys you need to wake up. What Gomab and Coach T does do is get names out there on everybody's tounge that may not have gotten any exposure. Having been privileged enough to see many of the guys on his list play (and not just one game...anyone can have a bad game) i would say that Gomab does a good job of judging talent. Also Gomab if you read this let me know how I can get in touch with you personally (this is about a player and i am wanting your perspective on his performance in summer ball and what he might need to work on...this is a player you have mentioned a few times).

Here's your first good mark, hoopsjunkie. You said it well. This is nothing about any individual kid at all. Anyone who gets any scholarship at the college level is a fine player. Different people have different definitions of "heavily recruited". To my way of thinking, "heavily recruited" would mean, at a minimum, that the school has offered a scholarship, and that their head coach has come to watch you play.

A 37 cent stamp is cheap!

I know several schools came to watch Jamar play this season and I believe some came to his school to watch his workouts this spring. Stamps may be cheap but at least they spent that much and yes it is a big deal to anyone recieving a letter from any school so let's don't down play it to much.

If you don't have a clue, don't post...

Jamar was heavily recruited by Miss St. They used their 1 phone call a week EVERY week. Stanford would call as well, though less often. Under NCAA handbook, a player who recieves a phone call from a college coach is officially being recruited. Miss State made a trip to watch us at Houston just for Jamar, and was very dissapointed when he found out Jamar had been unable to get a flight to Houston. He did not just recieve mail. No one said Jamar was strictly a High Major anyways. He was recruited by Mids and Highs, and had recieved three offers at the time of his commitment. Anyone who hates on this is absolutely insane. The goal is to get a free education at a Division 1 basketball school, and Jamar did just that, something that only around 10 Tn HS hoopers do straight out of High School per year...

You have heard those knowledgeable on the subject all stick up for Jamar, and that is for a reason. Congrats again Jamar on an outstanding acheivement!!!!

If you don't have a clue, don't post?

I don't know you or your player, Gomab, but I am certainly knowledgable of basketball recruiting as a whole. Though I'm not familiar with the minute details of Jenkins recruitment, but I do know some: his other two offers probably came from UAB, Middle Tennessee State, Belmont, Lipscomb, South Alabama, Tennessee Tech or Mount St. Mary's - not Miss St or Stanford. Did Jamar apply for admission at Stanford? As you're aware, any player must be accepted as a student before they can be offered a scholarship at Stanford.

Number of phone calls or number of visits don't matter. In the end - and my original point - the barometer is the extension of an offer (or lack thereof). If he didn't receive an offer from Stansbury, he simply cannot pick UTC over Miss St. If he wasn't accepted as a student at Stanford, he couldn't receive an offer.

The point I made in the original point is the same - of the three colleges listed (UTC, Miss St, Stanford) as an option for Jenkins, only UTC offered, so it can't be a choice of high-major colleges vs. a mid-major college. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not "hating" on your kid, simply telling you what you already know. Mississippi State was his leader and he would have picked them if they had offered. That's not a personnal attack, please don't take it as such this time.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
