Small schools palying large schools?

Recommended Posts

I was listening to Southern Sports Tonite on WJCW (shameless plug for my fav. station) and they were discussing this very topic with the AD at Troy State. His opinion was, Yes, it's worth it. For several reasons:

1. the money: it has enabled them to build a state of the art facility

2. recruiting: it has given them national exposure, and landed them some quality athletes.

3. Div. I: all of this has enabled them to complete their plan to move to Div. I in near record time. Being able to play nationally recognized teams puts them in the spotlight for donations from booster and alumni.

Yes, they lose, but they can gain so much more in the long run. His arguments made sense to me, I don't know about the rest of the folks out there......

I don't blame some div 1 AA teams for playing a money game or two.

I do wonder why MTSU feels they have to play so many teams that offer no chance to win. Also found it interesting reading of MTSU and how many players (38) from GA are on their roster. One of the players committed on how football was huge for Uni of GA, just like everybody in TN is crazy over Big Orange. I believe this part of MTSU's problem. How committed are these players to MTSU? Speaking of their love for the Bulldogs?? For the VOLS??

Maybe they should focus on kids that have a desire to play for MTSU. I'll take a kid that wants to be in my program over a kid who believes they have to settle for MTSU.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
