Kenwood Tournament

I guess my first question about the tournament is, Why did they have 2 referees on the mat for the consolation finals and only 1 on the mat for the Championship finals? Especially when they had about 7 referees for the 2 mats out for the finals. Also, I believe that for a few of the referees, they would have needed another official just to form one competent one. And I am not saying this of all the referees that were there, just maybe 2 or 3. This particularly bugs me because a majority of the incorrect of controversial calls were made towards West Tennessee teams, (i.e. Collierville and CBHS). Let's see if Coach Masters(KKW), can maybe answer some of my questions because I know he too noticed many of the errors of the officials.

KKW,

What did you think about the officiating, because I was there, and I definitely saw some calls that ranged from questionable to poor. The most blatant went against Jay Simpson (171 from CBHS) in the finals. The official (the only official) did not hear the buzzer go off to end the first period. Simpson was behind the Clarksville kid when the buzzer went off. The Clarksville kid got a reversal after the buzzer and went out of bounds. Coach Lewis asked him about the call, and the official said that since he didn't hear the buzzer go off, he couldn't change the call. Don't you think that if there was another official, that probably would have been prevented? Also, shouldn't there have been a mat girl to tap him when the period ended? I'm not necessarily saying it was your fault, but surely you have a better answer than to mock a high school kid for you team's victory.

Best of the West...All officals make mistakes. It is called being human. Are you an offical? Have you ever done it? It is definately not as easy as it appears from the coaching chair or the stands. As for the match you questioned, did that call affect the outcome of the match? We both know that answer. It is a shame that after weeks/months of preparation that instead of talking about how well certain kids wrestled all that is brought up are the few/many(insert opinion) mistakes made by the officals. I don't believe you are new to the sport, so this should not be news to you. On any call that is questionable someone will be happy and someone will be mad. Did I like every call on both nights? No. Not even close. I choose to coach my kids and tell them how some things are out of our control instead of worrying about calls that will never change.

The second offical could/should have been used. As for towel girls they were used all day. The confusion may have come from switching scoring tables and clock for the finals matches. This occurred sometime after the start of the finals. Mat 1 had a small table clock. It was later changed to the large clock on the wall. This was ran from a different table. Again it doesn't explain why there was no girl, but they were utilized all day.

Coach Masters, if I were trying to make excuses I would be talking about why my finals match that only had 1 official had a call made at the last couple of seconds where the official began counting backpoints with less than 3 seconds in the match and the buzzer sounded almost immediately after he had 2 seconds counted, my opponent was awarded 2 backpoints for a 3 count that never happened. Also, in the same match I got hit for stalling when I took a shot and did not finish it, since when was the man attempting the takedown stalling? I ended up losing the match by 1 point, and I choose to blame this on the officiating. That IS my excuse, but I choose not to make excuses, so I previously did not mention but since you viewed my first post as an excuse rather than the complaint for which ot was intended, and you never even answered my first question as to why there were 2 officials on the consolation finals and only 1 running the championship finals? I will get over this folly though no doubt, and I will be training for our next return to Kenwood. I am blaming nothing on you, Coach Masters, just questioning some of the events of the tournament in hopes that you can answer them.

My intent for my post was to do exactly what everyone else does on this site--discuss topics. I did not criticize any particular official. I did not accuse anyone of wrong doing or unprofessional behavior. I simply attempted to bring about a reasonable discussion on a reasonable topic. I know Coach Lewis is very gracious to the Kenwood team and coaching staff for puting on the tournament, and since it was my first post on the matter, I hardly think I was lingering on the subject. Since I paid my $7 to get into the tournament (which I can only assume partially went toward paying the officials), I believe I should be allowed the liberty of discussing the topic. But out of respect for Coach Lewis and Coach Masters, I will drop the subject--no offense was intended. Good luck this year.

OK, just to say it and get it out of the way. But, it seems that some of the same teams that were there at Kenwood last year and complained, are again some of the same ones who were there this year, and complained. I am only questioning that if you weren't happy about the outcome last year, and you aren't happy with it this year, why in the world would you come back next year? (Please note, I am only making an observation on the negative comments, not the tournament. It was a tournament with top-notch talent. I enjoyed it.)

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
