voleagle
Who has the better polls or rankings: tnranker or matman.
Sommers
Let's support both, like AP, SI, coaches, or whatever. It's more interesting that way. Definition or what purpose do each of the polls serve is the question. What would be good to know is what criteria is used in each. Tournaments or duals 1st in evaluation of a team? Strength of schedule or potential considering short term handicaps, How a few studs can weigh more than an over all lineup, etc.? Finally, who gets their hands on the most information to consider a ranking? I'm sure common opponents for both the team and indvidual is a major factor. soms
voleagle
tnranker put his updated poll out more frequently than matman. he also seems more up to date. matman does a good job too, my question is which one should be used for seeding info? Head to head, State qualifier, medelist, records, common opponents. soms
papbear3
Neither poll should be used for seeding. Seeding for what???? Tournaments are seeded by coaches based on head to head and common opponents as well as state medalists, region champions, etc. The state tournament is not a seeded event. Only seeds are the wrestlers past state medals or placement in region tournament. These polls are for fun and are great for discussion for board junkies and they are good for our sport to get people talking. Other then that..... Thanks to all the rankers out their who put for the effort to rank.
best_of_the_west
Yea, there's no need to chose. I think both have their own strengths. This whole thing with some bashing the rankers and others doggedly defending them is getting really tired. Everyone should just have a good time discussing the rankings, not the rankers. sly
Any coach who would base the seeding of their tournament on either of these rankings would be a joke! First off there is traditional criteria that can be used for seeding like head to head results and common opponents and others. Also, there is nothing offical about either of the polls as far as the TSSAA goes. If you're just looking for and answer as to which is most accurate for seedings I would choose Matman's because you know who he is and what his agenda is. Tnranker could be anyone including one of my opponents or someones grandmother, so why would I want to use his/hers opinion over my own or anyone else. Both poll sure have caused alot of discussion though.
CoachDelgado
Good call papabear. We have used the rankings in the past for seeding at Black Horse Inv. At the beginning of the year, no one has really wrestled anyone. You could have a solid wrestler that does not meet seeding criteria except for a ranking. This year we didn't due to the fact that the two ranking systems were new this year. We'll see if we use them as a final criteria next year. I'll agree they are mostly just for fun. On the other hand, they are a great source of information when preparing for an out of town event or state. Sometimes we as coaches might take for granted that all the wrestlers from PKHS, Pigs Knuckle High School, are traditionally weaker opponents. With the rankings in place, they would identify the exception to the rule. We would know their 103 pounder is a world beater so long as he is being properly ranked. I also like to know what is going on in the Division II. Edited January 20, 2004 by CoachDelgado

As you can only imagine, I give more validity to someone's opinion when they identify themselves, some of you may agree like sly and papabear, but I think we should give more support and tolerance with good people trying to make this great sport more interesting. Like Papabear says, It adds more fun or luster to the weekday and weekend events. Let's leave the rankers alone and allow them a feeling of appreciation while they add to the interest of our great sport!! soms
voleagle
i agree with everyone else here. ... but, lets decide who we think puts out the best rankings... knowing who is doing them in my opinion does not really matter. we know wrestling and what is going on.. so by the rankings put out by both these guys, which one seems to be the best. In my opinion, after seeing that latest changes to tnrankers, i like his.
