McCallie Defeats Notre Dame Wrestlers, 42-19

Blue Tornado Earns No. 1 East Seeding For State Duals

McCallie clinched the top seeding from the east for the upcoming state wrestling duals with a 42-19 victory on Wednesday night at Notre Dame.

The state duals will be held in Clarksville on Feb. 6-7. Three teams from the east, three from the mid-state and two from the west will be involved in the Division II tournament.

Baylor will play host to Notre Dame at 5 p.m. on Friday. The winner will be second-seeded from the east, and the loser will be third seeded. Normally, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the east will be in separate brackets for the state duals. That could lead to another McCallie-Baylor showdown in the final.

McCallie, ranked No. 2 in the state poll that includes all divisions, fell behind No. 10-ranked Notre Dame as the action started at 215. The Blue Tornado didn't take a lead until Cody Cleveland pinned Notre Dame's Jim Makemson at 135.

"There wasn't as much strategy tonight as there was when we wrestled Baylor,'' McCallie coach Gordon Connell said. "We just have a couple more horses than they do. They don't match up that well with us.

"But Notre Dame wrestled well, and I didn't think we wrestled well. We had a couple of guys who were pretty tired and shouldn't have wrestled. And Justin Blair was hurt a little, but he wanted to go. He doesn't like showing pain.''

Connell liked Zach Goss' win at 130 and Bobby Huffaker's at 171.

"Goss' win was an important match for us,'' he said. "His opponent was a state-placer last year and Goss is only a freshman. Huffaker has cut down from 189 and is gaining a lot of confidence.''

McCallie will wrestle on Saturday at McEachern in Georgia.

"I saw a lot of things we clearly have to work on before the state duals,'' Connell said. "I don't know if we'll take a full lineup to McEachern. We have some guys who need some matches and some who need a break.''

Notre Dame coach John Mullin said Wednesday's dual meet went pretty much as expected.

"I thought the keys were at 119, 125, 130 and 171,'' Mullin said. "We lost decisions in all of those. We had to get some wins there for the match to be winnable for us.''

Wednesday's Results:

215 -- Ian Meredith (ND) pinned Charles Green in 4:44. Both wrestlers remained upright throughout the first period. Meredith took a 4-3 lead after the second period and then earned his pin. Notre Dame leads, 6-0.

275 -- Nick Moore (M) pinned Jason White in 1:05. Moore took a 2-0 lead and then wasted no time in pinning White. Notre Dame 6, McCallie 6.

103 -- Jay Adamson (ND) won by forfeit. Notre Dame leads, 12-6.

112 -- Spike Rawn (ND) defeated Josh Wheeler, 3-2. Rawn took a 2-0 lead in the first period and maintained it through the second, not allowing Wheeler to escape from the down position the entire period. Wheeler managed two points with 12 seconds left, but it was too late. Notre Dame leads, 15-6.

119 -- Will Young (MC) defeated Andrew Wilson, 6-0. Young got his first point when Wilson was called for an illegal hold, and then coasted to the victory. Notre Dame leads, 15-9.

125 -- Joe Young (M) defeated Ryan Burdette, 11-6. This match was tied at 4 after two periods, but Young wore down Burdette in the final period five points in the final 50 seconds. Notre Dame leads, 15-12.

130 -- Zach Goss (M) defeated Sam St. Charles, 14-7. Goss, a freshman, picked up a good win for the Blue Tornado. He led by only 8-7 after two periods and almost got a pin late in the match. Notre Dame 15, McCallie 15.

135 -- Cody Cleveland (M) pinned Jim Makemson in 1:34. Cleveland took a 6-2 leads before sticking Makemson. McCallie leads, 21-15.

140 -- James Hayduk (ND) won by major decision (15-2) over Brenton Austin. This one was never close with Hayduk taking 7-1 lead after one period. McCallie leads, 21-20.

145 -- Justin Blair (M) defeated Daniel Rawn, 8-5. Blair led, 7-3, after two periods, but was wrestling hurt. That allowed Rawn to make a comeback in the final period. McCallie leads, 24-20.

152 -- Spencer Manley (M) won by forfeit. McCallie leads, 30-20.

160 -- Ryan Scott (M) pinned Charlie Stinchfield in 1:35. Scott took a 4-1 lead and then clinched the victory for the Blue Tornado with his quick pin. McCallie leads, 36-20.

171 -- Bobby Huffaker (M) defeated Wesley Watkins, 3-2. Huffaker earned a close victory. It was so close and so emotional at the end of the third period that Notre Dame coach John Mullin stormed the mat. His team was penalized by one point. McCallie leads, 39-19.

189 -- Flynt Rudolph (M) defeated Drew Wanat, 8-2. Flynt roared to a 4-0 leads and coasted. McCallie wins, 42-19.

Is this St.Charles related to that great McCallie wrestler, by the same name, from the 70's? I know Goss is another generation.
