I am 99% sure that Mike Newman asst coach at Mccallies evil blue empire is coach Newmans son. Mike is a great coach too.

I'm 100% sure of it, I remember when Mike wrestled with that big pillow brace on his leg. As for some rivalries, Adrian Norfleet and John Michael Garrett from Father Ryan was always a fun match to watch though I never saw FR win that match up, and John is an attorney now I believe. CHS 91 you were 2 years behind me I was @ 103 what weight did buzzy have you?

Hey CT,

I wrestled up a lot in '89 to help fill out the line-up. . . and my older brother graduated with you (along with Holt, Clark, Talley, Sturdivant) from that team.

Looking back, I wish I had worked harder and wrestled better in HS, as I never amounted to much, but I still had a he** of a lot of fun wrestling.

I'm no longer around, but have enjoyed hearing about the amazing improvement of the wrestling scene in Clarksville since our days (you and Buzzy's boy were our only state placers in '89 if I recall, and what'd we have, four or five kids there?).

And I'm glad to hear you're helping create that "scene" by coaching at NE. I'm not sure some of your "plastic-man" moves can be taught, though! Good luck at regionals.

Their matches were worth the price of admission. They were two quality wrestlers.

Norfleet and Garrett wrestled for the 1987 District Championship which was hosted by Springfield. There are two things about the match that I can recall at this time. Early in one of the periods, John Michael put Adrian on his back, giving him little room to counter. They remained in this position until the period ended. I can't recall how any other points were scored, but Adrian pulled out a win.

Garrett and Norfleet met the next weekend in the Region finals at McGavock. Norfleet was able to pull out another win.

The same two met again in the State Finals the following weekend at McClellan. Can't recall any details of the match, except that Adrian won his second State Championship.

    • Harriman was better than what I anticipated. They had good skill guys and a QB that’s gonna make a lot of teams look silly. They had some silly pre snap penalties but it’s just spring and I guess that’s expected.    Oneida looks the part. They are big upfront and got a stable of backs that’s gonna carry them this year. They have a few playmakers at receiver also. They have a new receiver that has only played basketball till this year and he is very athletic. The question is can we find a QB to consistently get them the ball. They played 2-3 kids there and none looked great but they didn’t look awful either. The  defense is gonna be tough again but it’s very early and a lot can change between now and the fall.     It was good just to get out and watch some ball. I don’t know if Oneida has the team to win the region this year but just what I saw tonight I think they may be in the conversation come November.
