BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, TSSAA are pleased to announce BlueCross Championship winners for 2012-13 academic year
Each school awarded $2,500
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. (November 7, 2013) – – – BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) this week named winners of the BlueCross Championship SeriesSM.
The Series is a partnership between BlueCross and TSSAA. It ranks schools statewide for overall athletic excellence and sportsmanship during the previous school year. Each winning school will be awarded a $2,500 donation from BlueCross.
BlueCross and TSSAA announced the winners this week at the three regional TSSAA annual meetings:
I-A Friendship Christian School in Lebanon (Wilson County)
I-AA Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville (Davidson County)
I-AAA Brentwood High School (Williamson County)
II-A Evangelical Christian School in Cordova (Shelby County)
II-AA Baylor School in Chattanooga (Hamilton County)
“We have a long history of supporting high school athletics through our partnership with TSSAA,” said Kathryn Trimble, corporate sponsorship project manager for BlueCross. “The BlueCross Championship Series is a unique way for us to recognize and reward the hard work and effort of Tennessee’s high school athletes all year long.”
“It's really a two-fold honor," Ronnie Siegenthaler, athletic director for Brentwood High School, said. "First, the sportsmanship component means that we didn't have a single infraction last year. With 17 sanctioned TSSAA sports here at Brentwood High, it's really a testament to our players and our coaching staff. Second, that the sportsmanship was complemented by competitive success throughout the year.
“We are so proud of our student athletes and it is truly an honor to receive this award.”
Geoff Walters, athletic director and head football coach at Evangelical Christian School, agreed.
“We feel very blessed to receive this award and are very grateful to the BlueCross Championship program,” he said. “Our school thrives on all of us pulling the rope in the same direction, and this award represents an accomplishment in that area.”
Now in its third year, the BlueCross Championship Series groups schools according to their competitive division and class as assigned by the TSSAA. Schools are then awarded points based on quarterfinal, semifinal, final round and championship appearances, with the potential points earned increasing at each level of competition.
Schools without a tiered quarterfinal, semifinal, final and championship round system are awarded points based on final standings at the championship series. Sports with individual and team competitions earn points based on team composite scores, not individual performances. The total points earned is divided by the number of sports offered at that school, to create an average point total.
At the end of the school year, those schools with the top average point totals in their division and class, as well as no citations for unsportsmanlike conduct, win.
