Boys
Isaac Matthews (Oxon Hill, Md.), indoor track
The senior middle-distance runner emerged from a slow
heat to clock the fastest 800-meter time in the nation
this season at the 9th annual Hispanic Games in New
York. The Maryland Class 4A indoor runnerup in the 800
timed a personal-best 1 minute, 56.43 seconds. The
time in the meet's fastest heat was 1:56.89 by former
Junior Olympic age group champion Michael Webley of
New York. Matthews has run 1:55 outdoors.
Girls
Ashley Shields (Melrose, Memphis, Tenn.), basketball
The 5-foot-11 senior scored 42 of her game-high and
personal-best 57 points in the second half as Melrose
upset Memphis East, the No. 1 ranked team in the metro
area, by 88-74. The University of Memphis recruit
scored 22 in the final period including a 40-footer at
the buzzer. Later in the week, she scored 38 points
against her former team, Hamilton, in a 77-64 win.
Both wins were on the road for Melrose (12-2), now
ranked No. 1 in the area. Shields averages 40.6 per
game this season and has 2,883 career points.
