Coach Greg Burleson Steps Down as Head Softball Coach!
Greg Burleson is stepping down as head softball coach at Summertown High School. He will remain assistant principal and take on the Summertown High School Athletic Director role.
Coach Burleson recently completed his 25th year at SHS where he served as a head coach and/or assistant coach of baseball, softball, basketball, football, and cross country. He won one state championship during his twelve years as head baseball coach, from 2002 to 2013, and two state championships during his eleven-year stint, from 2014 to 2024, as head softball coach. He was also a TSSAA volleyball official for five years.
Coach Burleson states, “I have really enjoyed my years of coaching. In my role as athletic director, I look forward to using my experiences to be able to assist all coaches and players at SHS with their continued success.”
Coaching at this level demands much time and energy and an unspoken sacrifice. This was a tough decision for Coach Burleson. Although we are saddened by his decision, we fully support him and are pleased that he will be taking over the athletic director role.
On behalf of Mr. Brian Porter and Ms. Kim Brite, the faculty, staff, and athletic department, former players, and supporters of the program, we extend our appreciation and wish him and his family continued success.
Wes Woods will be taking on the role as the new SHS head softball coach for the 2024-25 school year. Coach Woods is looking forward to returning to Summertown where he will teach 7th grade Social Studies and coach high school softball and middle school football. He has a wealth of experience and expertise in coaching softball, with a proven track record of success on multiple travel teams as well as at Marshall County High School.He has coached softball for 17 years. He also has experience coaching football at different levels including most recently being part of the staff at Summertown that won the middle school football championship in 2022. He is passionate about these coaching opportunities, committed to excellence, and dedicated to developing student-athletes. He will work to ensure his student-athletes are successful both on and off the field.
