Student Sports All-American Baseball Teams

First Team

C - Daric Barton (Marina, Huntington Beach, Calif.) Sr.
First round draft pick by St. Louis led his team to the CIF Southern Section Div. I championship and was co-Player of the Year in the division with Delmon Young.

C - Steve Lerud (Galena, Reno, Nev.) Sr. Prolific hitter ended the year with 21 homers and had 58 for his career. Picked in third round of the draft by the Pirates.

P - Jeff Allison (Veterans Memorial, Peabody, Mass.) Sr. The Marlins' first round draft choice didn't allow an earned run in 63 1/3 innings while striking out 142.

P - John Danks (Round Rock, Texas) Sr. A first round Rangers' draft choice, the lefty struck out 173 in 100
innings for state Class 5A runnerup.

P - James Houser (Sarasota, Fla.) Sr. The state Class 6A Player of the Year was a Devil Rays' second
round draft pick.

P -Jeff Manship (Reagan, San Antonio, Texas) Sr. He struck out 146 and walked 18 while allowing 40 hits in 85 innings.

P - Adam Miller (McKinney, Texas) Sr. The Indians' first round selection was 10-2 with a 0.49 ERA while
whiffing 128 with only 16 walks.

P - Stuart Pomeranz (Houston, Germantown, Tenn.) Sr. The 6-foot-7, 230-pounder struck out 135, walked 15 and allowed 28 hits in 94 innings.

IF - Matt Bush (Mission Bay, San Diego, Calif.) Jr. Collected 50-plus hits for the second straight season and was named San Diego area Player of the Year for the second straight year, too.

IF - Eric Duncan (Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, N.J.) Sr. See below for more on what the Player of the Year did.

IF- Jeff Flaig (El Dorado, Placentia, Calif.) Sr. Top hitter at annual National Classic tourney finished with .591 mark and was first-round choice by Mariners.

IF - Jonathan Fulton (George Washington, Danville, Va.) Sr. Virginia Tech recruit batted .476 with .642 on-base percentage.

IF - Ian Stewart (La Quinta, Westminster, Calif.) Sr. The Cal-Hi Sports Mr. Baseball State Player of the Year had 16 homers, 61 RBI and led team to 30-2 record.

IF - Brandon Wood (Horizon, Scottsdale, Ariz.) Sr. The Arizona Republic's Player of the Year did it all with .515 batting average, 20 homers, 51 RBI and 13-of-13 on steal attempts.

OF - Chris Lubanski (Kennedy-Kenrick, Norristown, Pa.) Sr. The Royals' first round pick and Gatorade National Player of the Year batted .528 with 10 triples and six homers.

OF - Mickey Hall (Walton, Marietta, Ga.) Sr.
Boston's second round selection batted .392 with seven doubles, seven homers and 35 RBI.

OF - Estee Harris (Central Islip, N.Y.) Sr. The New York state Player of the Year was the Yankees' second
round draft selection.

OF - Lastings Milledge (Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Fla.) Sr. The Mets' No. 1 draft choice led his team to a state Class 5A title with .414 batting average and 43 stolen bases.

OF - Delmon Young (Camarillo, Calif.) Sr. Senior numbers for the No. 1 pick of the entire draft were down from the year before, but .523 average, seven homers, 28 RBI and 40 runs scored even though he missed a month of the season with an ankle injury is still impressive.

MP - Chuck Lofgren (Serra, San Mateo, Calif.) Jr.
The state junior player of the year smashed 10 homers and hit for .404 average, but it's his dominant left-hand pitching that has many in the S.F. Bay Area so excited.

MP - Jordan Parraz (Green Valley, Henderson, Nev.) Sr.
Did it all for the Class 4A state champs with nine homers, 47 RBI, 49 runs scored and a .420 average. The sixth-round Phillies' draft choice also had a 94 mph fastball.

MP - Clayton Richard (McCutcheon, Lafayette, Ind.) Sr.
A Michigan football recruit at quarterback, Richard led his team to a state title as unbeaten pitcher, top hitter.

MP - Raul Rodriguez (Florida Christian, Miami, Fla.) Sr. The catcher-designated hitter batted .546 with 18 doubles, 14 homers and 57 runs batted in.

MP - Xavier Paul (Slidell, La.) Sr. This ball-hawking outfielder batted .391 with nine homers.

MP - Mike Rogers (Del City, Okla.) Sr. A do-it-all player, Rogers batted .608 and also was 5-1 on the
mound with 75 strikeouts in 40 innings.

National Player of the Year:

Eric Duncan (Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, N.J.)

The Yankees' first round draft pick (27th overall) and signee was co-MVP of the inaugural post-season All-American Game. He batted .536 with 27 extra base hits (12 HR) and 60 RBI with 42 runs scored as the 30-1 record Pirates won their second state Parochial A title in three years. Prep was ranked No. 6 in the Student Sports FAB 50. Duncan went 3-for-3 with a game-winning double in the 11th inning of the state championship. He smashed a 420-foot homer in the
previous game. "He has a great chance to be a great player," Yankee owner George Steinbrenner told the New York Daily News. "When you get guys you don't think will be there when you pick, that's tremendous."



National Coach of the Year:

Tommy Pharr (Farragut, Knoxville, Tenn.) The Mississippi native guided the Admirals to a state record 48-1 season mark, including a 35-game win streak, and a state Class AAA title to earn the No. 3 spot in the Student Sports FAB 50. Farragut's last crown came in 1982. In his sixth season at the Farragut helm, Pharr has taken the Admirals to three state runnerup finishes the previous four years, including the last two seasons. The Missisippi State graduate has a 217-47 record at Farragut after
coaching at Baylor University two years following seven years at two high schools in Monterey, Tenn., and Red Bay, Ala.
