Forrest keeps their cool, Tigers lose it
The Forrest Rockets won their fifth straight game 56-35 over Gordonsville, but the score is not an indication of the heated, hard fought battle that took place on the court in day two of the Eagleville Christmas Classic.
In what many long time observers felt was a first ever occurrence, a quadruple technical foul situation on top of a personal foul sent Forrest’s Taylor Gentry to the foul line for 10 free throws with 2:15 remaining in the contest after Gordonsville lost their cool after being outplayed in the fourth quarter.
Gentry made eight of the ten charity shots.
“That was pretty crazy,” said Gentry after the game. “It was close game before that, but that was it right there. I have never been involved in anything like that before.”
The first quarter was uneventful, tied at 8 after eight minutes.
Both squads got their legs in the second quarter and played quality basketball throughout the period with Forrest surging on a late 8-2 run to take a 21-14 advantage into the halftime break.
A Corey Bishop three-pointer, followed by a Justin McCord swipe and score early in the second half pushed the Rockets ahead 26-14 and things looked bleak for Gordonsville, but the Tigers came back, staying in the ballgame with an 11-7 run of their own to trail by just eight points at 33-25, going into the pivotal fourth quarter.
Buck Taylor, who had to sit out most of the game with foul trouble, scored high off the glass for the Tigers to begin the final period, cutting the Forrest lead to 33-27.
Kyle Gugger got hot for the Rockets at the right time, scoring on a long three-pointer from the corner and after a Gordonsville miscue, Gugger scored in the paint to open up a 38-27 lead.
Gugger would score seven out of his ten points in the ballgame during the 7-4 run that put Forrest up 40-29 midway through the period.
In the next minute, six fouls were split between the two teams as the play began to get physical and emotions ran at peak levels.
Zach Horvath made it a 42-29 ballgame when he drained both ends of a one and one situation with three minutes to go and then things turned ugly.
A three second call, two missed shots, and the fifth foul call on Gordonsville’s Zach Sanders set off a chain of events that led to Sanders losing his cool when the officials asked him to tuck his shirt as he went to the bench after fouling out.
Words were exchanged and Sanders pulled his shirt out again and was whistled again and his father, the Gordonsville coach also lost his cool and was whistled once and the Tiger bench was also called for a technical foul, sending Gentry to the line for ten foul shots, all from the one incident.
Gentry made eight of ten, essentially ending the contest as the Rockets took a 50-29 lead after the lengthy trip to the charity stripe by Gentry.
Gentry would go back to the line moments later after being fouled again and made one of two, giving the Forrest senior point guard all nine of his points in the game from the free throw line.
McCord threw some salt on the Gordonsville wound when he drained a three-pointer with the game out of reach and the Tigers were not a happy bunch after the twenty-one point loss to the Rockets.
Forrest improved to 12-2 on the season, while Gordonsville dropped to 3-12 on the year.
“We have to keep going,” said Gentry. “Our record doesn’t mean anything. Last year we pulled it together at the last moment, but this year we trying to get ourselves together right now and go into district strong.”
Gentry added, “The difference this year is we are a lot faster and we handle the ball better and don’t panic like last year. We are subbing in like ten people, so that keeps us with fresh legs and we just wear people down.”
