From the Murphy Center Blog: Boys Day 1, Session 2

Austin East 57, Giles County 37

The Roadrunner boys basketball team are trying to do what the girls did last week, win a state championship. Knoxville Austin East got off to a good start on Thursday morning with a 57-37 win over Giles County.

AE's Justin Walker scored 16 points to pace the Runners. A trend so far during this state tournament has been poor free-throw shooting - it continued today. Austin East shot 13-29 from the foul-line, but still won. Anthony Anderson and Darrell Flourence both had 10 points.

Memphis Mitchell 71, Chattanooga Howard 62

Mitchell, despite losing 11 seniors off their state runner-up team last year moved on. Mitchell used their bench to power past Howard, which only played six guys in the contest. Mitchell starts a freshman and two sophomores for Coach Jerry Johnson.

Since losing to Booker T. Washington in the Memphis City Championship, Mitchell has won seven straight. Howard, with 6:02 left in the third quarter led 41-29. From that point on, Mitchell would outscore Howard 42-21.

Mitchell moves on to the semi-finals on Friday where they will take on Austin East at 5:15.

Maryville 73, Bradley Central 68, OT

The traditional football powerhouse, Maryville took a step closer toward their first ever state championship. Four Maryville players reached double-figures with Kent Basile leading the way with 21. Tennessee football signee Tyler Maples finished with 16.

Bradley Central's Mr. Basketball finalist Terrence Oglesby finished with 22 points, leading all scorers. He will head on to Clemson to play in the ACC next year. Bradley was making their 19th state tournament appearance.

Session's top player: Mitchell's Kenyon Torry scored a session high 25 points in Mitchell's first round win against Howard.

Session's top moment: Overtime thriller between Bradley Central and Maryville. Maryville pulls off the first round upset over perennial power, Bradley Central.

What to watch for tonight: Three fantastic AAA games. All three could be buzzer beaters.
