MR. AND MISS BASKETBALL® AWARDS
SPONSORED BY THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
Memphis, Tennessee, March 22, 2002
Tennessee’s best high school basketball players for the 2001-2002 regular season were recognized at the Mr. Basketball® and Miss Basketball® Awards luncheon hosted by The Memphis Grizzlies. American General has been the sole sponsor of this event since the inception of these awards in 1985.
Not only was the coveted award moved to Memphis after being held in Nashville since the awards inception in 1986, but the Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards luncheon was open to the public for the first time in the Awards’ 16 year history! More than 1000 people, including the honorees, their families, coaches, school administrators, members of the media from all parts of the state, and individuals in the Memphis community were in attendance at the 2002 luncheon.
High school head basketball coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. A statewide committee of sportswriters selected winners based on performance. Academics and character were also taken into consideration.
The awards were presented to the top girls and boys in each of the four classifications of the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association.
