Forrest hardwood heroine Beth Hawn captured the state’s most prestigious individual accolade Saturday when she was named the 2009-2010 Class A Miss Basketball Award winner after the conclusion of the Class A state title game in Murfreesboro.
Hawn beat out Molly Heady from Clarkrange and last year’s winner, Laken Leonard from Jackson County.
A surprised Hawn said, “I didn’t think I heard it right. These were all outstanding players and it could have been any of us. This feels amazing, it is truly a blessing to come from a small school like Forrest and win a big award like this.”
Hawn becomes the second consecutive player from Marshall County to win a Miss Basketball Award, following Lauren March from MCHS, who won the Class AA Award last season.
Receiving the award was a little bittersweet for the UT Martin signee after her Lady Rocket squad was eliminated from the postseason in the Region 5-A tournament, marking the first time in five years that Forrest was not playing in the Class A state tournament.
Hawn said, “I would not have received this award without my teammates. I wish we could have all been here playing at the state together. This does not take the place of all of us playing here.”
Hawn had an incredible run at Forrest, scoring over 1,500 points and hauling down over 800 rebounds in her career. As a senior this season, the 6’1’’ Hawn averaged 21 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 3.5 steals per game.
The Lady Rockets amassed a 110-21 record in Hawn’s four years, capturing four regular season and district tournament titles, three region titles, and three state tournament appearances.
Forrest lost just two regular season District 9-A games in that same time span and Hawn was named to the All-District team and the District All-Tournament team 3 times, and was named the District 9-A regular season and tournament Most Valuable Player twice.
Forrest head coach Jeremy Jean was at the Murphy Center and said, “This is a great award for her because she has worked hard and deserved it. All three players up for it were great players. This is great thing for the school. Now all the kids that are in elementary school and middle school can look and say, I want to be there. The more of those we get the better we will keep becoming. I hope that is what it turns into that everybody can strive to get that honor and we will be a really, really good team.”
Before receiving the award, Hawn played in the Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee (BCAT) All-Star game at MTCS, scoring 7 points for the East squad in the contest.
Hawn was one of three UT Martin signees playing in the contest along with West squad members Perica Glenn (Milan) and Jasmine Newsome (Millington).
First year UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan, who was recently named the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Coach of the Year has landed a stable full of Tennessee talent, including Heather Butler, Heather Griffin, and Aubrey Reedy from Gibson County, Jaclissa Haislip from Riverdale and Matrekia Minter from Bolivar Central.
SkyHawk junior Alecia Weatherly, the 2006 Class A Miss Basketball winner from Perry County is also on McMillan’s squad.
Hawn talked about playing in the BCAT all-star game and her future at UT Martin, “Today was the first time meeting the girls on the court. I played against them this morning and it was not fun. I have some serious weight lifting to do. I got pushed around this morning. It was horrible. Monday morning after spring break I will be in the weight room.”
Hawn added, “I am going to take my game to college and try to do good and see what I can accomplish there.”
The Class AA Miss Basketball winner was Chassidy Fussell of Obion County Central and in Class AAA, Taylor Hall from Morristown West won the honor.
