Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Softball Game Tuesday

The oldest of the Tennessee-Georgia rivalries will be renewed in Chattanooga on Tuesday when the 13th Annual All-Star Softball Classic will be play at Frost Stadium.

Game 1 of the doubleheader, featuring the top recent graduates from Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, will begin at 6 p.m.

Tennessee swept both games in the first meeting back in 1998. They lead the all-time series, 20-4, and have completed nine sweeps in the 12-year history of the series.

Georgia’s first-ever win came in 2003 when they took Game 1, 2-1. Georgia claimed a 3-1 win in Game 2 of the 2006 Classic and followed up in 2007 with their only sweep of the Volunteer State.

Tennessee has won the last four games, including last year when they earned 2-0 and 12-10 victories.

Baylor’s Nina Davenport was the evening’s Most Valuable Player. Megan Givens (GPS) and Lindsey Lowe (LFO) took home Player of the Game honors for their respective states.

Over the years, the Softball Classic has featured some of the best players the Tri-State area has ever produced, the majority of whom have gone on to standout college careers.

This year will be no different.

Tennessee’s roster includes players from Class AAA state champion Soddy-Daisy, who finished the year ranked in the top 5 of two national high school polls, and players from GPS, who won the school’s fourth Division II state title.

Scheduled to play on Tuesday are Tennessee Wesleyan College signees Brooke Ward and Brandi Lasley (Soddy-Daisy), future Tennessee Lady Vol Tory Lewis (GPS) and Carson-Newman signee Sara Kelly (Ooltewah).

Georgia will counter will several players whose teams made deep runs in the state tournament last fall, including ones from Class A runner-up Gordon Lee, Class AAA third-place finisher Heritage, and Class AAAA third-place finisher Northwest Whitfield.

Among those on the roster are Kelly’s future Carson-Newman teammates, Jessie Forrester, Caitlyn Lance and Haley Lawson (Ridgeland), Shorter College signee Kristen Little (Cedartown) and Gadsden State (Ala.) signee Haley Kokoszka (Gordon Lee).

Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk will lead Team Tennessee while Tony Ellis (LFO) will take the reigns for Team Georgia.
