Summertown soars past CA

SUMMERTOWN - Columbia Academy's recent slide cost the Lady Bulldogs a chance at perfection.

Summertown scored a pair of sixth-inning runs to hand CA its first District 12-A loss, 4-2, Monday afternoon.

"I think every break went against us," Columbia Academy head coach Ricky Thompson said. "The balls just bounced wrong, and we just didn't make the routine plays. That was the big difference."

With the win, the Lady Eagles (16-3, 11-2) pulled within a game in the loss column of district-leading Columbia Academy (13-6, 7-1). The Lady Bulldogs now have lost four of their last five games.

"We're still playing with a limited team," Thompson said. "We've got several people out sick and hurt."

Summertown broke a 2-2 tie despite managing only one hit - a bunt single.

Brooke Kelley sparked the rally by drawing a leadoff walk. Beth Long followed by beating out a bunt before both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Anna Durham then drove in pinch runner Courtney Carrington with a groundout. An error on Mindy Wyrick's fly ball allowed Long to score the game's final run.

The Lady Eagles opened the scoring with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Bulldogs only generated one hit before tying the game in the fourth inning.

Tara Thompson got things going with a one-out single to center. Following a pop-up to the pitcher, Courtney Pope kept the inning alive by reaching on an error. Jennifer Kerr then made the Lady Eagles pay for their miscue, delivering a game-tying double to left field.

Summertown's Heather Lanier settled down after the fourth, limiting Columbia Academy to just one hit over the final three innings. Lanier earned the complete-game win, allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.

Rachel Brown was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Mallory Scott, Carrie Meek, Long and Kelley (double, RBI) each had hits for the Lady Eagles.

Heather Knox (run), Courtney Pope (run), Jennifer Kerr (two RBI) and Thompson (run) each supplied hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

"Our hitting was a little off," Thompson said. "I'm not worried about it, once we get everybody back and in form we'll get back on top."
