Riverdale High School’s Miranda Clark finished third in the 800-meter run at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics Saturday in Sacramento with a time of 2:10.

Clark was also part of the third place Music City Track and Field Club’s 4x800 relay team. They finished with a time of 9:21.2.

Riverdale’s Yentl Bigsby was 26th in the 100-meter dash.

In boys’ events, RHS grad Chris Jones, who won two TSSAA state titles last May, has qualified for today’s 400-meter dash final with a time of :47.61. He finished 14th in the 100-meter dash with a time of :10.92.

On a relay team for the Illusions Track and Field Club, Jones joined former Riverdale teammate Quitez Burke and Oakland runner Ronnie Lytle to finish 17th in the 4x100, clocking in at :42.30.

BUSY BURKE: Along with competing in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in California, Burke, a three-year starter for the RHS football team, recently completed freshman orientation at Northwest Mississippi Junior College.

Burke will play football at the school. He played safety for the Warriors.

SCRIMMAGES SCHEDULED: Before area high school football teams open regular-season play they will host and travel to scrimmages across the Midstate in efforts to better their clubs prior to Week 1 (or Week Zero, when Riverdale travels to Dickson County and Cannon County hosts Taft Youth Center).

Riverdale will host two scrimmages. On Aug. 3, the Warriors take on Montgomery Bell Academy, the two-time defending Division II champions. The exact time for the scrimmage has yet to be determined, but coach Gary Rankin said it will likely begin from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The time will be set later this week.

Aug. 10 the Warriors will host Franklin County, which they will play again in a regular-season non-district game Oct. 5 in Winchester. This scrimmage, for Riverdale, takes the place of the Rutherford County Jamboree. It will be played under the lights at Tomahawk Stadium.

Oakland will have three scrimmages prior to its Aug. 24 opener at Glencliff. The Patriots host an afternoon scrimmage against Hillsboro on Aug. 7, an evening scrimmage Aug. 10 against Brentwood Academy, and then travel to Tullahoma for an evening scrimmage Aug. 14.

The Daily News Journal will provide scrimmage and practice information throughout this week and up until the regular season gets under way.

NATIONALLY RANKED: Along with being picked No. 1 in Class 5A in at least four preseason polls, the Riverdale Warriors also have received national recognition.

The Warriors are ranked No. 32 in the nation in the Student Sports Fab 50. The only other Tennessee High School in the poll is Chattanooga Red Bank at No. 41.

SHARBER SHINES: Former Oakland all-state pitcher and 2000 Tennessee High School Player of the Year Jason Sharber is performing quite well in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

After extended spring training, The fifth-round draft choice started the season with the Gulf Coast Pirates, who play in Bradenton, Fla., in the Rookie League. His stay was impressive and short. In three starts, he was 1-0 with a 0.50 earned run average. In 18 innings, he gave up only five hits, while striking out 19 and walking four. He gave up just one earned run.

He was promoted to the organization’s Class A team in the South Atlantic League, the Hickory (N.C.) Crawdads. Sharber is pitching well there, too. In three starts he is 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA. In 16 innings, he has struck out 24, walked 10, and gave up 12 hits and only five earned runs.

POWERS HONORED: Riverdale baseball coach Buddy Powers was named the 2001 Class AAA/Division II Middle Tennessee Prep Baseball Coach of the Year by the popular MTPB Web site.

Powers led his Warrior team to its first-ever appearance in the TSSAA state tournament in May. La Vergne’s Craig Reavis, who also led his team to a first-time state tourney trip, was selected as one of three assistant coaches.

Area players named to the first team include: La Vergne pitcher Matt Scott, Oakland catcher Tommy Smith, Oakland outfielder Jeremy Slayden and La Vergne shortstop/pitcher Draper Oakley.

Second-team selections included Riverdale shortstop Matthew Campbell and Riverdale outfielder Travis Wilson.
