  1. IMO, the problem with paying the head football coach at the D2AAA schools so much money is that they often make more money than the head of the school! Never underestimate the power of jealousy! I was told by both a BA alum and former coach that the headmaster was bad news, and he would eventually be fired for not supporting athletics to the level that BA alumni are accustomed to seeing.
  2. Like it or not the David Lipscomb High School fans got spoiled by Trent Dilfer. There is a lot of difference between an NFL QB that won a Super Bowl and someone that was an NFL offensive lineman! This is not to say that Kevin Mawae will not figure it out because what Trent did was unbelievable. I will say that when TD took over the Lipscomb program it was not far from being on the bottom and he led them to the top. With that being said Kevin walked into a great situation.
  3. Totally agree that Pearl Cohn is the best team in MNPS. In most years I would say that the MBA win was a great win but after watching MBA, I am beginning to feel like they may not have one of their better teams. If you don’t have a great QB in high school football it’s extremely difficult to win against good teams. MBA was fortunate to have a great 4* QB the past four seasons.
  4. After watching the game last night your new QB could use a lot of training and coaching by TD. IMO, he is a good athlete but his fundamentals and decision making skills are a long way from being a 4* QB. In high school football a team must have great decision making skills from the QB position if you want to win against the elite teams. You can’t merely “out athlete” ever team you play!
  5. Just like a legal case you should recoup more than just the cost of what you would financially lose! It’s really very simple, if you don’t want to write a check for 25K+ then don’t sign the contract or if you do don’t cancel the game. I have absolutely no issues with people canceling games but it’s far more than the monetary cost as you also have to look at the team that had the game canceled. That school, players, band members, cheerleaders, parents and coaches were denied the opportunity to do what they love to do and that is participate in the high school football game atmosphere. I am very much aware of the fact that schools in Tennessee don’t require anywhere close to 25K for someone that backs out of a contract. What I have stated on other threads is that as an entrepreneur I am most cognizant of the cost of doing business and not fulfilling a contract. If I were a high school or college athletic director I would write the contract so that if you made a conscious decision to not fulfill your end of a contract it would severely damage your checkbook. We are not talking about a school that had a bus wreck on the way to the game or the head coach passed away the day before the game. In closing I would not only require a contract with a minimum of $25K cancellation fee but I would also include a clause that “ALL” legal fees would be paid by the school that canceled the contract and the case would be heard in the county with which my school is located! Oh and yes before you say it I am a stickler for the rules and considered by many to be a hard a**. However, I am really easy to work with as long as everyone does what they say they are going to do and doesn’t try to skirt the rules.
  6. Something has to be done to get everyone’s attention! This is happening every year and it needs to be stopped. IMO, this is where those idiots on Lebanon Road in Hermitage, TN (TSSAA) need to take a stance and force the schools to sign contracts that say if you back out of a contract the fine is substantially more than they are today. Believe me when I say that if the fine were 25K, Harding would have played the game. Using simple math: if it cost $10.00 per person to gain admission to a high school football game and you have 1500 paid attendance that is an immediate loss of 15K not counting the concessions. The average person spends $5.00 at the concession stand. The concession stand loss would be $7500.00 for a total loss of $22,500.00. Let’s not forget that these public schools must not only support the football team but help support all of the other sports teams at the school.
  7. Harding Academy should be required to pay a minimum fine of $25K for canceling the game. This is totally ridiculous.
  8. Back in the day (50's 60's, 70's & 80's) did most high school football games not begin at 7:30pm or 8:00pm? Maybe those older folks were a little smarter than people want to give the credit for.
  9. Don't try to put words into my mouth as I am just stating facts! IMO, Tennessee is smart to have a heat index rule that protects the players, officials and coaches. My biggest fear is that we have so many officials that are 75+ pounds (severely obese) overweight and one of them will have a heart attack or heat stroke and die during a game.
  10. Reep would be a good choice and it's my understanding that Roark ask to wrestle against Cooper. I am not sure that Roark is big enough to wrestle 138lb unless he has really put on the pounds. Do they have to weigh-in for this event and if so, is it scratch weight or will there be a weight allowance?

    Middle School

We actually finished first or second every year in our league and never with more than one loss out of a 8 game schedule. Now the elementary school team finished most years with a .500 record. Again, it’s how you finish and not where you begin. How many years have you coached at the middle school or high school level?
  12. It's my understanding that Texas does not have a heat index rule. Just looking at a few of the teams schedules it appears that most games begin at 7:30pm.

    Middle School

No, your post about something being ignorant without a full explanation is what's not very intelligent. May I take a moment to inquire as to what is not smart about my post and exactly how many years have you coached middle school athletics? The middle school program that I previously coached at is the feeder for a high school that has won multiple state championships. The high school head coach selects all of the coaches for elementary school, middle school and the high school team.
  14. Out of curiosity, why would TSU practice at Lipscomb? Another question, does Lipscomb practice on Saturday after a Friday night game? I know that some of the top programs do this, but most high school coaches seem to give the kids both Saturday and Sunday off once the season begins.
  15. I was driving by the Lipscomb field Saturday morning after the game and it looked like IMG was practicing. Just wondering how many high school teams practice on Saturday morning after they play on Friday night?
  16. Must you really travel all the way to Indiana to find a high school football game? Would none of the D2AAA teams in Tennessee not agree to play you?
  17. Let’s not forget the old DeLaSalle teams between 1992-2004 that had a winning streak of 151 games and several national championships.
  18. McGavock and John Overton do not draw the same type of athletes that they did even 15 years ago.
  19. Mike Wright signed with Vanderbilt for football but was also drafted as a catcher. Ingle Martin signed with Florida and later transferred to Furman but played in the NFL.
  20. It’s very simple; it takes lots of money to have nice and updated facilities. In Tennessee both the politicians and their constituents agree on one thing and that’s DON’T RAISE TAXES. Public school education is paid for with tax dollars and if you don’t occasionally raise taxes you will not be able to build new or maintain previously built facilities.
  21. This should be a great event that I hope is well supported.
  22. 1. Bartlett 2839 2. Collierville 2827 3. Rockvale 2433 4. Dobyns Bennett 2414 5. Cookeville 2266 Farragut is #13 with 2067 (Hardin Valley has more students with 2096)

Don't try to play games and refer to Nashville Catholic Youth Wrestling as Father Ryan Middle School as you know that is the farthest thing from the truth. Everyone knows that Nashville Catholic is a 501C3 with the IRS (I also found that while fact checking your statements) and is strictly a youth wrestling club. I would guess NCW is very similar to the Wave Club, Higher Calling, Tennessee Wrestling Academy, Big Red, Halls or Minion Training Center. I hope that Coach Yost and McCallie do become competitive again as there was a time when they were one of the top teams in Tennessee. McCallie is the only school in Tennessee that has the resources to compete with The Baylor School in athletics.

Unless Baylor had several kids transfer out of the school since the end of the 2022-23 school year they will win the D2 state wrestling championship unless they have a rash of injuries or implode. Baylor has so many kids that will finish in the top 3 at the state tournament that it will be difficult for anyone to catch them. With regards to Nashville Catholic only charging $50.00 per kid I found that difficult to believe so I took the time to look at the Nashville Catholic Wrestling website and the cost for middle school wrestling is $300.00. Please don’t shoot from the hip and make things up as it’s so easy to fact check everything. I do ask what wrestling for a middle school club team has to do with kids enrolling in the high school other than exposure. Do the kids not have to be academically accepted, pay the full tuition or qualify through a clearing house to receive financial aid to attend Father Ryan? All of the top high school wrestling programs have club teams that accept kids from each and every school. FYI, there is a strong rumor that in the future Father Ryan will be forced to follow the path of Pope Prep (6th-12th grades) and add a middle school. My hunch is that this will not happen until after the new Catholic grade school and high school in Nolensville open and that is a few year away.

It’s ok if they wish to transfer to Baylor! The argument is that kids transferring into boarding schools should be required to sit out one academic year if they have already established an athletic record at another school. If these student athletes don’t want to sit out one year then enroll at the school as a freshman or have a legitimate change of address with their family and this is not a topic for discussion. Someone ask the question as to what Father Ryan would do to counter the latest transfers into Baylor. Unless Father Ryan makes the decision to become a boarding school I don’t see the Irish having any options. I will say that if you look at the Father Ryan roster it looks very similar to the Nashville Catholic roster from a few years ago. The rosters at Christian Brothers and MBA also resemble those of the Wave Club and the MBA middle school team. I am not saying that Baylor is doing anything illegal as they are following the TSSAA rules. What I am saying is that there is a bad rule with a major loophole that should be closed. If the boarding schools want to recruit kids from all over the country that is great but they need to withdraw from the TSSAA and compete against the likes of Wyoming Seminary and Blair Academy during the regular season. I am still asking the question of how many kids in The Baylor Schools starting lineup competed for the Baylor middle school wrestling team?
