  1. If you want to get a good idea as to what level of competition there is on the college club circuit go to MTSU the last weekend of this month on the 30th and 31st for the NCWA National Duals. Several programs from the area (MTSU, TN Temple and possibly Lee) will be there as well as several other top clubs from GA, OH, FL and other states. The programs compare with the JUCO level and several NCWA programs have regularly competed with and beaten DII, NAIA and DIII programs. Some even wrestle DI schools when they can (UCF wrestles Purdue this month). NCWA wrestlers have caught rides with DI and other programs. These programs compete regularly and will help take your wrestling to another level if you are dedicated and serious about it.
  2. 112 Neblett won on what was a surprise decision (think the score was like 6-2) 119 Morrison won on a 13-12 decision also voted best match. Not sure what the 125 result was.
  3. Having a couple of tri meets the day before might fix the problem due to the 5 match rule and therefore keeping the spirit of the duals intact. Eagleville, while welcomed, created a little bit of a kink in the process. Hopefully they can get everything worked out before next year. FYI with Eagleville competiting as a A/AA school they have some leverage in how they might set it up as well. And is response to the comment about Blackman. They are clearly the best team in the county as of now. But to say they show bail out of the duals is not the answer in my opinion. They have only won the duals for the 2nd year. Oakland and Smyrna were the top teams until last year. This meet is about supporting Rutherford County teams and enhancing the competition.
  4. TSU does not rent LP Field. They are use it as a result of the terms the State of Tennessee placed on funding the building of the stadium with public funds (Bonds issued to help build it).
  5. Blackman should easily take this and I think Siegel will take the #2. Oakland could challenge but having several still out with football will be a issue this weekend. Riverdale is decent.
  6. Pattonboysdad has no anger issues. He is a good man simply making a point against accusations and hints at accusations that have no merit. He is absolutely correct on several fronts. 1. THERE WAS NO INDESCRETION ON BLACKMAN'S PART. 2. The wrestler in question weighed in and was bumped within the TSSAA and NFHS rules and regulations. 3. There were 2 referees taking part in the weigh in and were additionally there during the match.
  7. You can check on the tssaa.org site. The bottom line is that girls can compete during the regular season against the boys until regionals. At regionals if they compete then cannot compete in the girls state tournament. If they skip traditional regionals then they can compete at the girls state in Chattanooga.
  8. I saw in the local news where Josh Patton has commited to play football for the Naval Academy. Congrats to a fine young man. He will make another fine example of the quality of our local athletes in Division 1 programs.
  9. Not all regions have the same quality of teams but nevertheless deserve to be equally represented. I agree that it is a shame that with such a deep region that a good team will be left out but that is the case is just about every other TSSAA sport. At some time and point teams from regions have to meet to see who advances and in this case a very good team will get left behind. It is not feasible to try to adjust the playoffs to favor a certain region over another based simply on one having a higher quality of teams within it. To have to make that decision given the numbers of sports within the TSSAA and the number of districts/regions that would fit that criteria is simply too much to ask for. The best team will still be representing the region and therefore meet the ultimate purpose of the playoffs. it has been a frequent occurence to see the two best teams with a playoff meet before the actual championship game. Just my 2 cents.
  10. No problem. The fees were set by the TSSAA last year and have not changed this season.
  11. Officials fees have not increased this year just as a FYI.

What happened to Coach Russell at Antioch?
  13. Glad to hear Jess is doing well. I look forward to seeing him hopefully on the mat next year. Also tell Josh I said congrats. Heck of a year for him. Next year will be even better. I look to see him in the finals next year!!
  14. No one said we like you. And proof otherwise is denied! No matter what those photos suggest! Good luck this weekend Mr Frazier and Mr Patton. Unfortunately I was assigned to another region. Otherwise I would love to be there front row seing you get a head of steam for state.
  15. Pattonboysdad is most definitely a homer!!!
  16. Boro - My "retrained" statement for all other refs was meant as a "joke". When one guy is way more aggressive then the others, pulling the one fellow back in line is the most prudent. Putting on the stripped shirt doesn't empower one to become a crusader for their own interpretation of the rules. Joke taken. I whole heartedly agree that putting on the striped shirt does not allow one to become a crusader and that is should never be the case. I will say that I have taken issue with some officials. But I also have their backs as hopefully they would mine. I am not beyond admitting if I have made a mistake and hope my counterparts are capable of the same humility. I will also say that in recounting your issues with the official in question that while you have issue with the frequency that stalling was called you did not disagree with the actual call (not as far I could tell anyway). I have myself called stalling as soon as 20-30 seconds in a match. Stalling is stalling whether it is 20 seconds into a match, 20 seconds left in a match or anywhere in between. You are correct that a level of consistency should be present. I will gladly concede that point and back up your assertion there. I would also say that stalling is not called enough. I ,admittingly, call it more aggressively than most of my counterparts from past experience. Whether it is considered being prudent or not I am not here to debate. The issue is whether the call is correct or not, according to the established rules of competition.
  17. Walkenvol: I ,for one, vehemently disagree with you. There were some very good ref's at the DII duals. As far as I saw stalling was called pretty fairly. Agreed as stated before it is somewhat subjective (although it should not be) the calls were good and in line. You might not like what you saw in the HWT match but to say the other officials need to be "retrained" is a joke.
  18. My opinion is that if the TSSAA sees fit to make a split for duals why not the traditional state/Individual? I would not support any more of a split than that but feel if the duals justifies a seperate tournament why not the traditional as well.
  19. Taketop is correct in that the assistant referee cannot overrule the head official on a mat. The head official can confer with him for his opinion and take his perspective into account in determining how to make a call but the head officials call is the one that stands. The definition of stalling is: Action is to be maintained throughout the match by the contestants making an honest attempt to stay near the center of the mat and wrestle aggressively whether in the top, bottom or neutral position. Examples of stalling are: 1. Advantage position. The contestant in the advantage position on the mat must wrestle aggressively and attempt to secure a fall when action permits. Whenever the offensive wrestler is content to hold the opponent on the mat and not work for a fall, the offensive wrestler is stalling. 2. Rear-Standing Position. Repeatedly applying the legs while in the rear-standing position is stalling. 3. Defensive position. Refusing to wrestle aggressively in the defensive position is stalling. The contestant in the defensive position must initiate action designed to escape or reverse the opponent. Failure to make these attempts is stalling. 4. Holding legs. Repeatedly grasping or interlocking hands around a leg resulting in a stalemate situation, in any position, is to be considered stalling. It is stalling when the wrestler in the advantage position on the mat grasps the defensive wrestler??™s leg(s) with both hands or arms, unless such action is designed to break down the opponent for the purpose of securing a fall or to prevent an escape or reversal. Repeatedly grasping and holding the leg(s) with both hands or arms merely to break down the defensive wrestler or to maintain control is a violation under this rule. When the defensive wrestler has gained a standing position, the wrestler in the advantage position is allowed reaction time to begin a breakdown. 5. Neutral position. Each wrestler must make an honest attempt to work toward the center of the mat and maintain an attack to secure a takedown, regardless of the time or score of the match. Contestants may maneuver to avoid the tie-up if such action is taken to improve position or acquire a takedown. Repeated movement away from the opponent without attempting a takedown is defined as fleeing the opponent and is stalling. A contestant who continuously avoids contact without initiating an attack, plays the edge of the mat, secures a single leg and does not attempt to finish the move, or uses upper-body tie-ups to control and move the opponent without attempting a takedown, is stalling. To answer the question regarding a wrestler being given "the benefit of the doubt". I think your question is ambigious. A "well coached wrestler" should not be given anything based on his coaching. A well coached wrestler will be more aware of the mat and what he needs to do to stay within the rules and score where a lesser experienced/coached wrestler might not.
  20. Bayou Bear. Well said! Some very valid and well taken comments...
  21. Unfortunately APSU is not an option. The university was approached and would not entertain the subject. Surprising only if you do not consider that basketball rules at APSU (only revenue generating sport for a while although getting I-AA football might assist a little) and that the school has a wrestling club currently that competes in the NCWA.

The return of Monterrance Reams presents another candidate. As good as he was last year if he comes into regionals in anywhere near that shape he will tough to bet against come State.
