  1. Does it officially count as a first down when a player scores a touchdown, from either less than 10 yards away from the goal line or further than 10 yards away? Example 1)--1st and goal play from the 5. Does the team get credit for a first down if they score? Example 2)--Ball is on the 35 yard line, 65 yards away from pay dirt. They score on a long play. Does the team get credit for a first down? Two schools of thought on this--1) In example 2 they covered more than 10 yards so yes they get credit for a first down. 2) However, the chains or down marker were never moved and the official did not signal '1st down' so no they do not get credit. I would like someone with knowledge of the rules to weigh in on this, not someone with a personal opinion.
  2. This may be one of the very best jobs that Coach Smith has done in 17 seasons with the Bears. They were picked 3rd in the pre-season coaches poll and showed their mettle and warrior mentality with their wins over Cleveland (three times on the CHS floor) and then their win over Ooltewah. It will be a tremendous challenge for the Bears to beat Siegel on Monday at BCHS.
  3. She was out of the game for an extended period of time in the 4th period with her 4th foul. The personal was her 5th and then the tech was called.
  4. I agree that their coaching has to be questioned. I would have called a time out (maybe two) in the 3rd quarter when things were going south for the Lady Blaze. They had size to match the Bearettes but not the experience from their 'bigs'. Bradley's 'bigs' smoked them inside because the Lady Blaze 'bigs' seemed to want to play on the perimeter rather than inside against the rugged Bradley Central big girls. The Lady Blaze will be a force to be reckoned with in the future if they can gain some strength physically and I think that Coach Hibdon will be capable of seeing that this happens. Little Pollock was an outstanding shooter but didn't get enough looks I thought. Dangerfield has to be given a lot of 'respect' as she will be a major force in the future. Bradley Central must continue to get consistent and strong play from their guards to move on this season. Donaldson can look good but then make some really questionable unforced errors at times. If the Bearettes play under control and concentrate on their strengths then they could rattle some cages and make some noise next week. Withrow can be devastating with her 3-pointers (5 tonight) and Whitted needs to be consistent in her guard play. There is no better 6th man anywhere than Baylee Carroll. Best of luck to the Bearettes in the 'boro'!
  5. Her 5th foul was called as a personal foul for being over the back in a rebounding effort and got her eliminated from further action in the game, relegating her to the bench. Her 2nd technical was called on this same play when she slammed the ball to the floor in frustration after the 5th foul and caught it on the rebound. Technically, she was out of the game and on the bench after the 5th foul on the personal . She was not ejected and asked to leave the floor as you would normally be after a 2nd technical foul so the foul should be called as a 'bench' technical. She moved to the bench and watched the rest of the game from there. It will be interesting to see what is officially decided on this. Overall, it was an outstanding effort from a valiant Bearette team. Copeland is an absolute warrior! The guard play has recently been superb for the Bearettes despite some really silly turnovers that were unforced. This Blackman team will have to be dealt with in the next couple of years because of their youth and inexperience. I thought that their youthfulness showed up greatly tonight starting in the 3rd quarter. Watch out for them in the next 2-3 years. They'll be the power out of that district and region. Best of luck to both teams in the future!
  6. Congratulations to the boys district teams from 5-AAA in their sweep of 6-AAA. Walker Valley and Bradley Central take care of business at home and Cleveland and Ooltewah pull off wins on the road. It should be a heck of a finish for Region 3-AAA at Cleveland. Better get their early on Tuesday for the boy's games before the fire marshall stops entry to the dome due to capacity overload. Good luck to all our teams!
  7. In the case of ties, the tie-breaker is based on how your fared against the other teams in the district starting with the #1 team and working your way down, unless one of the tied teams swept the other team. In this case, you are correct if BCHS beats McMinn this Tuesday and then CHS, MCHS and BCHS win out. The tie-breaker is a coin toss. The important factor here is the #2 team would be bracketed opposite #1 BCHS and not have to face them until the district finals which also keeps them separated in the region until the finals, if both can advance without being upset.
  8. The Bearettes lost to Millbrook, NC 53-46 in the finals of the Upward Classic tourney. I understand that Millbrook has several starters that have signed D-I scholarships so they must have been pretty talented.
  9. The Bearettes last sub-state win was at home in 1995 over White County. They lost to Shelbyville in the state finals that season. 53-43.
  10. You are right about having to travel from Region 3-AAA to play a sub-state game on the road versus Region 4-AAA. There are still two unbeaten teams in Blackman and Riverdale and neither will be beatable on their home floor. Question---when was the last time that a girls team from Region 3-AAA won a sub-state game on the road. I researched as far back as I can and cannot find any time that a Region 3-AAA girls team won this game on the road. Help me out if you can and let me know which (if any) team won, what year and who they beat.
  11. Sorry about the wrong year on Walsh. I was going by what the tourney program listed. She is an outstanding player no matter her grade.. Good luck the rest of the year to each team and let's stay away from the injuries. There were at least 4 or 5 girls currently battling through injury recoveries or just coming back from one.
  12. Tourney recap-- The Bearettes won this tourney for just the 2nd time (2005 was the 1st) since it began 12 seasons ago. There have been 6 teams in this tourney that went on to win state titles in their division or state. Several of these teams have an extremely good chance to go deep this year. 8th place--Brainerd--They showed some scrappiness with Ward, Douglas and Rogers leading the team. Not a lot of size but a veteran coach. 7th place--Oak Ridge has a limited roster meaning no depth at all. They are just a shadow of the past great teams under Jill Prudden. Whitney Mitchell is a player though as the leading scorer in the tourney with 60 points for 3 games. 6th place--Bearden--Another extremely young team with no seniors on the roster. Freshman Erin Walsh is outstanding with 48 points in the tourney.. 5th place--GPS--Two-time defending state champs in DII-AA, they lost a lot with 4 starters graduating. Watch freshman Akia Harris to blossom as she gets more experience. Senior Brianna Farris is a really good player. 4th place--East Hamilton--Another young team with a monster in the middle in Juliette Harp. Good coaching will have them winning the district in 6AA. 3rd place--Alcoa--Two outstanding players in Katie Stubblefield and Freshman Tara Shields (deadly shooter.) Excellent coaching. 2nd place--Hamilton Heights--Non-TSSAA member due to their being a small private school catering to mostly foreign players. Monstrous in size at 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, 6-6. Short on guard play and ball handling with point guard Ruta Savickaite (Western Kentucky) still recovering from an injury. Mostly an inside playing team, obviously, but Ima Akpan and Jovana Stojanovic can hit long range but they are streaky. The big girls had a lot of foul trouble in the championship game. 1st place--Bradley Central--Bradley's bigs are better than HHHS' bigs in 6-1 Brooke Copeland and 6-2 Rebecca Reuter. The Bearettes lost over 60% of their scoring from last year's team placing 5 players in college on basketball scholarships. Look for any gym the Bearettes play in this year to have college coaches working to land these two post players. Transfer Whitney Donaldson has been a very pleasant surprise after having just a few practices due to an ACL recovery. Kaylan Withrow and Brandi Whitted have picked up their game but must continue to improve if the Bearettes are to get back to the level of last year's team. Whitted and Baylee Carroll may be the most improved. The Bearettes will be even stronger when starting point guard Chelsie Summars returns from her ACL surgery in January and transfer Maggie Thompson becomes eligible in December.

  20. The TSSAA has confirmed that the quadrants will not be reworked. They'll simply replace Cleveland with Sullivan South.
  21. The TSSAA has officially notified Cleveland that they are out of the playoffs and that Sullivan South will be playing at Columbia Central. The TSSAA has also notified Sullivan South that they'll be paying their expenses to make this trip which will take about 5+ hours for the team.
  22. Word in the press box is that 6 players, 3 from each team, were ejected during the fracas. TSSAA will be reviewing the video to see if more could be ejected. You can't leave the bench for ANY reason if there is a fight on the field. The players that were ejected will be suspended for next week's game for Soddy-Daisy vs Warren County and McMinn County hosting Bradley Central.
  23. Simply go to the TSSAA playoff scenario from their home page and it will show you the 16 tiebreakers used state-wide. It's pure and simple. 1) Most wins, 2) teams on your schedule with a .500 record or better, etc. It's black and white no 2nd guessing. District champs determined by this protocol will host no matter their record.
  24. This is a FRIDAY game, not Thursday as earlier posted. It is also homecoming for the Mustangs.
  25. I agree with everything that you say EB. The officials were from the South Central Association out of the lower part of Middle Tennessee, assigned by the TSSAA. We had seen little Elvis earlier and he was clearly a man out of his league to call a game of this importance. As for the flagrant foul on Smith, it may not have been intentional but it surely fired up the team. I'd be interested in know if there has been other games in a region championship that invoked the mercy rule, especially on the floor of the home team. As for the comment about the Crossville sports writer saying that the Bearettes were 'nothing special' after he watched them against Coffee County, just consider the source and you'll understand. Another curious call during the game was the technical foul assessed when the Cumberland County shoved the Bradley girl to the floor. They called a technical on her for doing it but there was no personal foul. I don't think that the refs understood the rule book on that or maybe I'm wrong. Can you call a technical foul because of player contact without it also being called a personal foul. It probably should have been ruled a flagrant, intentional foul and the player ejected. Doesn't matter anymore because this whole team will be 'ejected' from further play with they get to tangle with the girls of Riverdale tonight.
