  2. Who is looking good on the Boys side to do well at the state meet? What about girls? Any teams or individuals to watch?
  3. I was suggesting that you can go to the 2010 INDOOR rankings (not look at last year) to get a sense of what some of the track and field athletes who will be competing in the Spring already did in the just-ended indoor season. You have to go to Rankings and then select Indoor boys or girls TF. If you are a member of milesplit you can click on each event and do a drill down to see all of the indoor rankings - not just the top performer. May be information overload but good luck.
  4. It's early yet. We should see some better marks in the next week or so I would think. Look at the 2010 TN indoor rankings (under rankings) to get a sense of what people are running, jumping, and throwing leading in to the season. http://tn.milesplit.us Click Rankings and then select 2010 indoor track and field. Hope this helps.
  5. If you are talking about J. Smith from Ooltewah he graduated in Dec and enrolled at UT for Jan semester for Football so he's not there.
  6. Track is here as of Monday! What teams, boys or girls, are favored to win the State and why? Division or class doesn't matter, just looking for some talk to liven up this blog that's been dead for a while!
  7. I heard he missed the Ooltewah playoff game for a disciplinary reason. Can you shed some light on that? I am not from the area.
  8. The oversized guard is pretty good - a beast in fact. Good feet and balance. Not a pound over 360. Stone is good too. Better on offense than defense in my opinion. The team plays sloppy at times but has good overall speed. As far as the 'put nine in the box' theory, is the same strategy Ooltewah utilized against Oakland in the playoffs last year?
  9. I would think there would be some players from Chattanooga Central on there -- especially since they were a force to be reckoned with from 1957-1959 and won some sort of mythical national championship (I think) one of those years. They were coached by the legendary Red Etter (who later coached the hannah boys and many other greats at Baylor).
  10. Check out Brentwood High School boys. Excellent in decathlon, 800m+ distances, and field events. Two consecutive State Championships.
  11. The BHS shot putter with the best distance so far this year did not throw at Doug Hall. The other 50+ thrower had a bad day. The 41+ footer from DH Relays is the #4 thrower (10th grader) and he threw the discus 128'. Wade (10th grade) threw for the first time since returning from an injury. 50'1.5" shot, 144'4" discus.
  12. Hard to say who is the best. I played against Reggie. He sure seemed pretty good to me while he was running over and around me. Played D Line and Tight End in High School. John Hannah deserves consideration as well.
  13. Wednesday October 10 at 6:30 at FHS. Should be a good one between evenly matched teams.
  14. Unfortunately, public schools depend heavily on funding from things like 12th Man Clubs and the like. You ought to see some of the track and field facilities. What a disgrace. There is no reason for this other than a bad combination of poor government funding and no or insufficient funding from supporters. I don't see why those HS sports fans with abundant resources don't make significant donations to needy school athletic programs so kids are able to improve their experiences. Schools like Ooltewah with the healthy surrounding demographics should be able to organize an internal fundraising effort to have decent facilities.
  15. In my opinion, each situation needs to be addressed on an individual basis by the coach. In some cases, players have single Moms who just are too naive to get their kids out there - and the kids MAY too naive (especially Freshmen or younger) to go out there. In a perfect world, the coach(es) would well publicize to kids/parents that multiple sport kids who will show up late should obtain special permission to do so. If the coach believes someone has been purposefully not come out early to avoid the hard work, then the coach should make a judgement call as far as how to handle the player's request. An interesting story, I started playing football in the 7th grade when I stupidly figured out my friends were not riding the bus home after school. One day, shortly after school started I just decided to go out to be one of the guys. I had never played football before and was in no kind of shape. Fortunately, in the 70s things were a bit more innocent and pure. The coach provided me with a uniform and let me come out. He didn't really seem to care that I had missed 2-a-days or that I never played. Eight years later I was 1st team All-SEC. Again - every case is special and the natural progression of things usually makes things even out. Ultimately, the coach has to do what he thinks will be most beneficial to the team performance and its cohesiveness. A tricky balance sometimes but, as someone said earlier, life is not fair.
