  1. BGA 6 or 7 vs. St. Cecila 0. I saw the game. BGA looked very strong. They are very, very, good and will be tough team for anyone to beat.
  2. he he...thats not good...looks like we both should stick to a nice safe arena like high school girls soccer. Im with ya man.
  3. Franklin vs. Brentwood score update: game played on teusday 9/11. Franklin 2 vs. Brentwood 1
  4. mjuhb is the ultimate fan in girls soccer. He does a really good job and knows his stuff. Fair and unbiased. I dont know him, but i like his passion and support for girls soccer in TN. He probably could be a good handicapper for some pro games. MJUHB got any picks for me this weekend NFL? my fantasy team is suffering. I need a point getter. Who do you recommend? I know you know.
  5. Final Score Franklin 2 vs. Brentwood 1 It was a good game.
  6. Club soccer doenst have to be expensive if organized that way. A team can certainly spend a lot of money if they chosed to travel a lot and play out of town games and/or tournaments. Even if they play local tournaments there is entry fee. However, if you get someone to organize a team, play in a lower division, practice twice a week (just play if nothing else), and schedule some local friendly games on a Saturday afternoon, then the cost can be almost nothing. That is how less affluent areas should go about it and there are a lot of less affluent areas that do just that. So there is a opportunity for high schools who do not have a big club program to play and get better at soccer during the offseason in an inexpensive manner. It just takes a little initiative on someones part to make it happen. Having adults throw hissy fits and act like kids is not just a club soccer issue. I see that in every sport and during the work place all the time. Unfortunate, but I see it everywhere. Here in Williamson County at swim meets, tennis tournaments, and at the work place. So that should not be an excuse for not playing club soccer. We cant shield our kids from the realities of society. Go play soccer and get over everyones attitude.
  7. TSSAA should stay out of this one. I coach club and assist at High School. I support both. Both environments can mean a lot to a young persons growth and reaching there potential. Club coaches have to understand (and im a die hard club coach trust me), that high school soccer is simply a lot of FUN. Its a good thing. That has to mean something. Whats wrong with kids simply having some fun with there friends, representing there school and/or community for about 3 months. Sometimes the soccer isnt that great, but who cares. The opportunities to become leaders, set and reach goals, and learn about team values exist in high school sports. I would never discourage someone from playing high school sports or high school soccer. Plus, I would actualy argue that touching the ball every day for 3 months is ultimatly a good thing. If during high school, a players will do fitness every day either as a team (per the coach) or individually, and work on their skills at practice and in games, then high school very well could make you a better player as well. Many club coaches think that they have to "retrain" players after high school. In a lot cases that may be true, but it works both ways. IM amazed at how many kids come from travel teams that in the 9th grade still cant recieve a ball, have no left foot, cant head the ball, and look dazed and confused when you start talking about zonal defending. Not to mention the lack of work ethic and being completely out of shape. I wonder what these clubs get paid to do, since none of the above seemed to be accomplished. If you play club soccer, the above items should be no problem by the time you reach high school. High School soccer can be a good thing and the players have fun. Club soccer can be a good thing and players should have fun competing agianst tough competition. The positives of both should be identified and ebraced and supported by everyone. TSSAA should get a job or something.
  8. The JPII was an exceptional team. An incredible team no doubt. I coached Meagen Forrester (vanderbilt) and Grace Lawson (Alabama) on my '88 club team that won 7 DI state championships. Very familiar with those players. Thay are as good as it gets. If I was biased, they would certainly be my pick. Meagen and Grace have no bigger fan or supporter than me. They are two of the best TN has ever seen in my opinion. That senior class at JP was unique and very talented. They won state, didnt lose and could play with anyone. National ranking #1. St. Agnes was #3. One certainly could make a case that JPII was the best team of all time in TN soccer history. But St. Agnes and Franklin of '92 did the same things. JPII, St. Agnes, franklin '92 comparison. Fun comparison on my genuine thoughts before we played these teams. I coached against JPII '05, St. Agnes '06 and the Franklin '92 team as either head coach or assistant coach for Notre Dame, St. Cecilia, and/or Franklin. All three teams were very dangerous but every team has a weak spot that you have to try and find and exploit. Franklin '92 weakspot was coaching. JPII weak spot was mental (sometimes lazy and inconsistent work rate). St. Agnes simply caused me more concern before we played them because they didnt really have a weak spot to take advantage of. They were not lazy, worked hard and had great talent, speed, and well coached. (also knew the SA players from club for playing against them for 7 years). Thats a team thats a problem to play. I felt we could score on Franklin '92 with Notre Dame (felt we could outcoach them). I felt we could outwork JPII and make things interesting at St. Cecilia (beat us 4-0) although i knew we couldnt win. They should have beat us (12-0) considering what they had and what we had. Thus, JPII had a mental weakness of playing down to the level of competition instead of demonstrating a killer instinct and beating us like they should. If St. Cecilia can play the nations #1 ranked team to a 4-0, then there is room for questions, Cuz we had cheerleaders and volleyball players and cross country runners making up our soccer team(2 travel players). I think this is the only weakness JPII had. They just didnt always hustle and work like they should and to me, this deosnt allow me to put them as #1 of all time. Maybe #2 due to the awsome talent and coaching, but they still kept people in games when they shouldnt have. We played St. Agnes with a very good Franklin team that won reionals and made quarter-finals in 06. They beat us 4-0 and there was nothing we could do. They simply out hustled us, scored 4 legitimate goals (first half alone) and we couldnt get behind their back 4 much less shoot on a great goalie. Keep in mind we had already beaten Colleirville (05 state champs and 06 state finalist), 4-0 earlier. We could score goals. St. Agnes shut us down. With St. Agnes, I felt like it would be very tough to score (organized zonal back 4 with national team pool player goalie, we couldnt outwork them(super hustle team), and everyone in their front 7 could score. In other words, no weaknesses either mental or physical. JPII put things on cruise control sometimes and that left them vulnerable from time to time to being upset and games being closer than they should have bee. Franklin '92 had all talent but not very sophisticated. ST. Agnes had no issues. And gave up 1 goal all season to Collerville (AAA state champ 05 and state finalist 06). Beat Franklin (AAA quarter finalist 06 4-0), so one cant say they didnt play anyone. They beat two very good AAA teams. It is most likely that JPII played a tougher schedule '05 since the teams in Middle TN, were pretty strong that year (Father Ryan, BGA, Harpeth Hall) and for the most part the teams that st. agness played in the West seemed to be a little bit down that year. So this does pay into JPII's argument a good bit. I hated the Franlikn '92 team cuz they kept beating my beloved Lady Irish(no bias here). But trust me, they were loaded from top to bottom and could play with anyone today. In girls soccer, weight lifting isnt a big part of it like football and other sports where earlier eras werent as big and strong in many boys sports and therefore todays teams are simply much better (football for sure id say). IN girls soccer, talent is talent, skill is skill, speed is speed, and goalkeeping is goalkeeping. Franlin '92 had it just like JPII and St. Agnes had it. The womens national team of the early 90's with Mia Hamm and company was probably better than today's team. So different era's in girls soccer doeasnt really matter if they had talent and coaching. As more information comes in its probably easier to say these number of teams were some of the greats and what a great match to see them play. Much like watching the Bears '85 team play the undefeated Miami Dolphins. What a great game, but who knows who would win. All of these teams were great and each year a state champion is crowned with great teams who had great years. Nothing should ever be taken away from those teams accomplishments. Certainly not a fun debate like this. But the best ever? fun debate, but every team is special in there own way and thats all that really matters. Everything else is just fun talk. Id love to hear about some other teams and there players during the year they won state. there have been so many really good teams. How about the many Baylor teams that have been amazing, Bearden, Germantown(both of them), Hendersonville, Farragut, FRA, Franklin 00. Who else?
  9. A quick history of great teams since 1985. Two Era's really. 1985-1993. 1994- present. ive seen girls high school soccer since 1987-88 when my high school sweetheart was a Sr. at Notre Dame High school in chattanooga. At that time Franklin High had won the first 3 sanctioned state championships and we beat them that year 1-0. Franklin then won it every year through 1993. The best Franklin High School team during that era was the 1992 team. Jenger and Jennifer Burchett were seniors. That team traveled to Ohio and Maryland and beat everyone they played. Won state and lost 1 game maybe to Germantown Red Devils (Cindy Parlow was a freshman at the school). in 93, Cindy Parlow was a Sophmore and was on a great Germantown team, but Lost to Notre Dame in the state Semi-Finals 1-0. Germantown was better but didnt get the win. Notre Dame then lost to Franklin 3-1 in state finals. During the 1985-1993 era every school played everyone. There were no divisions. If you won state, then you truly had a remarkable team. I think Franklin, Germantown (both Germantowns were strong), Notre Dame, Hendersonville, Farragut, probably had the best teams with Franklin dominating that era with 9 state championships and Notre Dame 1. All of these schools had teams and players that could play today no problem. The best team during this ear. Franklin's '92 team. Loaded from top to bottom. After the 1993 era, a lot of schools added programs and divisions were created. My opinion, Baylor High School had a team I believe in 98 or 99 that was just loaded with top level travel players and led my Alison Mitchel (clemson). They won several state championships. That team was as good as anyone. Other great teams during the (modern era). Ridgeway had 3 incredible players Jenille Newborn, Meagen Mattea, and the a national team pool player in (name escapes me). They played in A/AA at the time and wore everybody out. They also could play with any AAA school or DII school. Baylor has dominated DII in the 2000's and those teams could play with any division. JPII had a great team with Meagen Forrester and Grace Lawson and 8 seniors on their state championship team. Fra had a nice state championship team couple years back. Farragut had a great team not to win state couple years back with Katie Green. Which leads me to the greatest team ever in High School history. To be the greatest I think certain criteria have to be met. I think you have to win your state championship in the year your claiming to be the greatest. I think you have to prove you can beat other teams from other divisions. and to some degree, I think you have to have some great named players. This is a team that not only scores a lot of goals, but shuts people out regardless of division. Therefore, with all due respect to the many great teams over the years, and I am sure I have forgotten to mention a few (i apologize upfront)....The greatest team in high school soccer history is ST. AGNES OF 2006. They were undefeated and gave up only one goal during the regular season. They beat everyone in there division as well as the top teams in other divisions like AAA state champion Colleirville and AAA quarterfinalist Franklin. St. Agnes had a National team pool player goalie in Kelly Dyer, DI players in a set of twins Molly and Meagen Kinsella and host of other really nice veteran players. Greatest tournament of all time would be top eight. Subject to much fun debate. Quarters: St. Anes 2006 vs. Baylor '98 or 00 Franklin 92 vs. JPII 05 Ridgeway late 90's vs. FRA late 03 Germantown 93 vs. Farragut (katie greens team) Semis St. Agnes vs. Ridgway Germantown vs. Franklin Finals St. Agnes vs. Frankin 92 Champion St. Agnes in double overtime Penalty Kick shootout on the 10 kick Kelly Dyer saving the shot after both teams made the first 9 shots. I am sure some of my dates are slightly off. IM doing this all from memory. Im sure i have left a great team out of the mix, but im pretty sure the Franklin '92 team and St. Agnes team are the two best ever from the early ear and the modern era based on the criteria of winning state, beating everyone they played in any division and having some great named players. I have personally seen all these teams play and familiar with the players so I hope i have done the debate some justice and added some facts that are helpful to such a fun topic. see ya laban
