  1. Yeah ELA, gee you got me, the best runningback in the country playing in the smallest and probably weakest classification in the state? That might happen once every I don't know 40 years. Not much of a reason to change work study, and oh yeah...he DIDN'T do it.
  2. I actually wrote that post, Cocky is my brother's name. I support a Division 2-AA school, and we have p played several private school teams who might have work study (including BA) or give scholarships...I never at all wanted to argue about that, or get mad at them for that...Football is a team game, I remember Quincy Carter gave up pro baseball and went back to football cus he said how much of a team concept it was. I don't think one player makes a difference, notice I said ONE ELA not 3 or 4 like you think makes a difference (which it probably does in 1A). Look at Red Bank, they had Gerald Riggs...one of the best players in the nation and still didn't do as well as they hoped. Then look at Maryville, many good players, but not many went D1, if any...I'm not sure if Tn Tech is (the fact that I'm not sure says something right there). I can see how work study might be a big deal if a kid was a basketball player (lets be honest if you have the next Michael Jordan on your team you will probabl beat anyone), but football wise I just don't buy that concept, Memphis East and Melrose have some of the best athletes and college players out there, but it doesn't always translate into state championships...
  3. Let's remember who is on that side of the state with Maryville. West (beat them last year) Tennessee High (undefeated last year) Red Bank (won state two years ago) Cherokee (playoff team) Cocke County (playoff team) Not to mention Hillsboro and Memphis East who are on the other side but still dang good.
  4. 3 out 10 thats the only stat I'm looking at.
  5. nonews, What have you contributed to this board? You don't stand for anything...all you do is attack people because of their beliefs, you make fun of private schools (Utopia school of Jackson, I think it would be Utopian school of Jackson) you make fun of urban public schools like melrose and make comments about they only have 8 people in the stands...Instead of telling VolGen to settle down, you tell him not to blow a gasket, I don't know who you root for, or how and if you want to solve this public/private debate...personally attacking people does not do it, and then you say things like "you guys actually think you might make a difference" which is fine to say, but you attacking people who are trying to bring about a greater good does not help anyone...I really do enjoy your biting wit, but could you talk more about solving the situation, then just getting people off the subject? I don't think I am the only person that thinks this either, your language is too hard for me to pick up on (even with a private school education, I understand your words but not necessarily the meaning behind them). Before you respond, please look back at my first question, What have you contributed to this board. P.S. Please do not decipher and analyze my use of writing, I know I am not the best, and their might be sentence fragments or run on sentences, but that has nothing to do with the public private debate.
  6. You guys need to think logically man...if anyone should be bias it should be me, but I can be logical Briarcrest has beaten Harding a lot lately, that just means they were better then, we shouldn't get cocky and think we are going to win, we should go work hard in the weight room and practice hard...only way Harding has gotten where its gotten has been through hard work...not through trash talking, anyone can trash talk...let the score settle it. Currie, you have to admit over the last 2 years Harding has improved drastically, and I see no reason why they won't this year, this might be the strongest senior class (physically) harding has ever had, and also one of the deepest. Harding is just trying to keep improving, and if Harding4ever thinks that trash talking will help him, then let him. Harding beat ECS twice last year for the first time in 5 years, and we were honestly the better team. I told to BCS players who read this today that sometimes the better team doesn't always win. I honestly think Harding and BCS were better then BGA, but we made some mistakes, and BGA capitalized...I said before I think Harding and BCS make it to the final, if harding doesn't turn the ball over early in the first half, I think they have a good shot at winning it, let's stop the petty trash talking and just wait and see what happens.
  7. You guys are great man, every few days this board starts to slow down...and then it just explodes, it brings a tear to my eye. ELA, will you please comment on the math thing posted on the other thread...I am still waiting for you, and anyone else who comments on this board, like nonews, chakra, pujo, swamp, panfan, and the rest of you guys to tell me what is wrong with Volgen's plan. I admitted that what the "possible upcoming problems" that I saw were wrong, all I heard from most of you guys was that ELA's was better, never learned why though...oh yeah cus yall don't play the privates that way. BTW, there are still two or three slots open for fantasy football, that might be the only way I can shut some of you guys up.
  8. I think coaching is more important then we think. Look at Maryville. How many of their players go D1? Not to many, but they are always favored to beat teams. Hillsboro, and East both had more talent then them last year and they would have destroyed anyone in 4A even if they didn't see them in the playoffs...They completely shut out Riggs, who was the most talented player in the state. Ezell had some great players, but in the end it came down to coaching... BGA had some of the youngest skill people in D2...they had a sophomore qb and a sophomore runningback, and a pretty young offensive and defensive line...Harding and BCS both had more all state players then they did, but both lost...BGA had 0 turnovers against both Harding and BCS, and even though BCS had more then twice the amount of yardage...BGA was the smarter team and executed in the red zone...WHERE COACHING COMES IN TO PLAY. ELA you are right, if you get to choose 4 players then your team will be in the top 4-8 teams in the state...but so will any team...that doesn't mean you will win. I don't consider anything great until you go to the state championship, win it,or semi finals, thats just how I was raised... Talent will only get you so far, Coaching will win the title...were the lakers more talented then the Kings? Probably not, yeah they had shaq and kobe, but that was it, the kings were 8 guys deep and sometimes 9...its luck, hard work, determination, coaching and talent, all rolled in to one...I think both of you guys are right.
  9. Yall know I will be rooting for yall...I just stated facts man, got any scrimmages lined up? Make sure you post some stuff about yalls games every once and awhile for me.
  10. just1np, you are correct on that, but he still didn't say private school coaches were better, which is, at first what I was guilty of thinking. Chakra...I need a straight statement on why you think private schools have an advantage in regards to coaching...I'm sorry but reading your post, I don't really see where the actual advantage is, but that I'm not blaming that on you.
  11. Those are pretty lofty expectations, since Harding hasn't beaten MUS since the early 70's...and Harding hasn't beaten Briarcrest in the last 10 games, also Brentwood is possibly the best team in the state and you are playing at their place...whats funny is, I think its still possible. But I don't see them beating Briarcrest twice, only splitting with them...but that could be enough for a state championship.
  12. ... the "8 parents" illustrate why these schools have such poor coaches, who really wants these jobs... that is what you said Just because one coaches at a school that does not have support from it's peers does not mean that he or she is a bad coach. I saw Jones coach his first game as they looked very horrible against a really good CBHS team, It isn't the amount of fans nonews who determine how good a coach is or isn't. Calipari and the tigers sold out of season tickets, yet they failed to beat any team with an RPI under 50, Just because you coach at a small school, doesn't mean you are or are not a good coach, and it also does not mean you can't get a better job. As far as me and the Melrose crowd support...the only thing "abnormal" about it, is the fact that they go and see their team play regardless of where it is played at, whether its in orange mound, the liberty bowl, cbhs, or anywhere...it was a compliment, I think it is good when a small community takes pride in their young men. I do not think Jones was a part of the scandal you spoke of, but he most certainly could have been...but I think most of that was because of Thompson.
  13. Congratulations to my friend Nick, and the Dulins Dodgers 17's and 18's for winning another World Series...best program in the state hands down.
  14. haha, nonews your wrong...Tredwell was the school I was speaking of, yet Melrose High School chose Malcolm Jones as their coach, who held the same job at Tredwell...Nexttttttt? I think everyone on this board will admit that Melrose is a big time football school...there were scandals there, but that doesn't take anything away from their state titles, willinginess to play up, and great college athletes...that even you nonews, regardless of who you root for in college, has possibly seen your team run across, whether it be for Memphis, Arkanasas, Kentucky, Ole Miss, UT, or Bama. 15. Atlanta? Good golly, thats horrible...I believe you can be a season ticket holder to see the falcons now for 100 dollars or something like that, small price to pay to see Vick and Dunn. HBO will be doing "Hard Knocks" which is a documentary on NFL training camps...America's team was picked this year, I believe a new episode airs every week or two weeks starting with July 31st...just in case anyone is interested.
  16. VG, go back and see who won the last two games between the Cowboys and Steelers...one being the Superbowl, I am ready to go back to the public/ private debate if anyone wants to add things to what has already been said.
  17. let's forget about the 8 parents....the real problem is in coaching, if you have a great coach, more kids will go out for the team, suddenly parents and administrators are excited...hey we might beat Team X in football and basketball this year! Look at teams like Whitehaven, Melrose, Trezevant, East...they take such pride in their football teams, even if some of the kids are from broken homes or poor... Then we look at teams like White Station or Bolton who simply do not have the interest to get where they need to get.
  18. I'm actually about to get a cowboys star tattoo on my shoulder so they will always be a part of me.
  19. So now bruceton isn't in the same league as USJ? USJ lost their DeLoach, Fay, and Payne to name a few...I doubt they have the backups for those guys in the closet ready to come out and out do those guys.
  20. Please, reread what he said...he didn't say private school coaches were BETTER, he said private school coaches are good in urban areas, that is not belittling the coaches at Cloudland, Collinwood, or South Pitt..he is saying the urban private school coaches are good...I don't think one is better then the other, but if all things are equal, then as he said...the one who can instill hard work, discipline, and dedication into their players will win.
  21. Among NCAA football programs in all competitive divisions, 81 percent spend more than they bring in and contribute nothing to other sport budgets. Even among Division IA football programs (the largest schools), more than a third are running deficits in excess of $1 million per year. http://www.macalester.edu/~vball/titleIX.html Let's take a clear and rational look at the facts: Fact: At about 90% of all NCAA member institutions, football does not pay for women's sports or even itself. Fact: Among the supposedly lucrative big-time football programs in Division I-A, 45% are running deficit programs averaging $650,000 losses annually. Fact: 90% of Division I-AA football programs are running deficits averaging $535,000 per year. Fact: 40% of all Division I-A men's basketball programs run annual deficits averaging $250,000 dollars a year. Fact: 75% of all other Division I men's basketball programs run annual deficits of close to $225,000 per year. http://home.earthlink.net/~tfakehany/gender.html ELA, I am sorry but college teams are not making the money you think they are...Yes UT and Texas are exceptions, but when you include scholarships, trainers, practice equipment, game equipment, medical attention, food, travel, hotel (most d1 football teams stay in a hotel before a home game), it's not what you think...these people are telling you, and so am I, they don't make money. Even if you go to a bowl game, like the liberty bowl, they payout is only around 1 million, keep in mind you stay at a hotel for at least a week, travel...and then have to split that with the other teams in your conference...Title IX should be changed...not thrown away, but amended...it was 30 years ago...a lot of things change in that time.
  22. haha, under normal circumstances, I would be mad that you changed the subject, but not about this...Does the Knoxville area show the Cowboys on TV? In memphis the cowboys were huge, many cowboys clubs are here and meet at bars on sundays, but with the emergence of the Rams and the Titans and the cowboys downfall...that has died down. Cowboys have Kevin Hardy, LaRoi Glover, Bryant Westbrook...3 new starters right there. Carter's last 4 or 5 games were very impressive including wins over the Redskins, and 49ers.
  23. ELA, So you are telling me right now, that teams like the University of Memphis are making Millions of dollars a week. If thats what your saying, I'm going to hold you to it, I realize UT does it, but if you think Memphis is getting millions of dollars for playing games on the road, you are wrong...U of M's budget is only 16 million...
  24. More information that may interest you...I would also like to say, I am against this if it is women getting put out on the street instead of men, like at Mississippi University for Women, I don't think it is right to have an equal ratio, even if just a few men go there. Âú For every female participatory slot added, about four male slots have been eliminated. If this trend continues, all male Olympic sports programs will be extinct in 5-10 years. (Add 15,000 to the female numbers and subtract 60,000 from the male. That will mean that "gender equity" will be achieved at 140,000 athletes a piece.) Presently, females have more sports programs/teams (7000+) to participate on at the college level than males have. Âú Presently, females have more scholarships than men do in all counterpart sports (e.g. track - 18 to 12.5; swimming - 14 to 9.9; volleyball - 12 to 4.5; gymnastics 12 to 6 Âú There are 35 high school wrestling programs for every college wrestling program. For females the ratio is 8 - 1 (soccer); 10 - 1 (tennis); 7 - 1 (field hockey); 11 - 1 (swimming); 11 - 1 (volleyball), etc. Does that seem fair? These are just certain things, it is odd that there are more girls sports then mens. The only reason I bring this up, is to show that adding numbers to private schools just like adding numbers to sports programs is on the whole...not fair.
  25. I'm not talking winning, I'm talking money...Surplus of money translates to better education in colleges, which translates to better careers, which might help us get out of my stock problem woes, which continue to worsen each day.
