Fact of the Day: According to HSFDatabase, Riverdale's 41-7 loss to Oakland is their worst loss since 1990, before Rankin's run of excellence began. Unreal. Never thought I'd see the day. As far as Aydelott's legacy goes, look at the shoes he's had to fill. My God, Rankin's career record is somewhere in the ballpark of 285-36 for in 23 years with Riverdale and Alcoa, with 9 state championships and numerous undefeated teams. If he's not the best football coach the state has ever seen, who is? Too many high expectations coupled with what seems to be the loss that killed their dynasty: losing 9-7 to Smyrna at home in the playoffs in 2006. After crushing them for 30 years (17-0 record) and after beating them 49-0 earlier that year in Smyrna (still the worst loss in program history), they lost in perhaps the greatest upset in state football history! Besides the fact Sonny and Rod was on our team, our team had NO business beating them that game. Coupled with the history we had against Riverdale, 999 times out of 1000 we would have lost that game. I myself was convinced we were done for. That win alone made us invincible the final two playoff games and changed my attitude immediately. It's a pretty inexplicable loss. They had that playoff game won at least 3-4 times and couldn't put us away. I think that loss still lingers with the coaches/staff, even if they won't admit it. It's a loss that can kill a program's momentum and jump-start another's (ala back-to-back titles for Smyrna vs. none since 2004 for Riverdale).
To sum up my point: has anyone noticed they've never been *quite* as fierce since then?
