  1. well here is a new twist to the thing. the announcement was made at the game that the school board did this right. my wife talked to a blount county school board member today and they said they knew nothing about it but would check into it. wonder if the school just did this on their own?
  2. does the confederate flag really offend heritage students? or is it just because it is maryville. i bet 50% of the heritage students have them on their bedroom wall. honestly all during the summer i would see pu trucks with a big red H license plate on the front and a confederate flag waving in the back. this is a joke. but congratulations. at least you finally scored!

    South Doyle and Halls

i don't know if SD has any passing game at all but if they do they have a definite advantage. Halls passing seemed non existent last week. when they were down 28-0 they kept running fullback dives and sweeps with lively. not much imagination there. i think they are pretty down this year talent wise because i think shephard is a good coach. but if you dont have the players sometimes there isnt much you can do.
  4. i guess we can bat this thing around till the cows come home and like i said mine was an estimate. i hope it was not my post that caused you to accuse maryville of inflating everything. but i can assure you of this. having more fans than home teams has been the norm for maryville for years win or lose. like i said. been watching them for 35 years home and away. that is not inflated. and this is not inflated. carl stewart had a 26 on his act and many of our senior footballers are honor students. carl is also in the orchestra. you may not believe it by this board alone, but maryville puts more emphasis on academics than athletics. and i both cases our record stands for itself.
  5. i have been reading this thread with interest since i have attended maryville games for over 35 years. yes maryville often does have a good team. and if you have a good team and mention it one time people accuse you of bragging and letting everyone know it. oh well that is life. anyway this attendence matter could probably be resolved by calling jerry thompson the athletic director about capacity. i remember the stadium was renovated in around 1983. i seem to remember at the time that it had a capacity of 5 or 6 thousand. i do remember a couple of games red bank last year being one of them when the crowd was estimated at "close" to 8 thousand but again that is an estimate. they do not average near that much. and while maryville's side is usually close to full it is not to capacity every game. it was against alcoa and that is the only home game we have had. and that game is always packed. my guess on the average would be in the neighborhood of 5 thousand give or take a few hundred on either side. of course estimates are like opinions and rear ends. everyone has one and most are different. but that is mine.
  6. congratulations to carl and to auburn. they are getting a great athlete, an oustanding student and a first class young man. tennessee blew it on this one. they could have recruited him as an "athlete" and found a place where he could excel. i agree with the fullback possibility also. this senior class may be one of the most athletic ones we have had and many of them are honor students. i am very proud of all of them.
  7. i understand he is doing place kicking and punting both at farragutt. haven't seen him place kick but he shanked a lot of punts while at maryville.
  8. you are right on the mark rebelron. by just listening to coach shephard you would doubt that halls has ever won a game period. i am always cautious with halls regardless of how the teams match up. he always seems to scheme us well and even though i am proud and confident in our line i can guarantee you we will have to throw the ball successfully to beat them. i saw where he is two platooning his lines this year which means their defensive front will only be going one way. and they will not hesitate putting 8 or 9 in the box if necessary. this will be a good early test for cade thompson. he threw reasonably well against alcoa except for the one interception. and we have got to hold on to the football! we cannot expect to recover five of our seven fumbles again like we did last week.
  9. sorry deion but these stats are a tad misleading. feigler is 17-43 3 tds 4 ints. and yes osborne has 90 something yards receiving but 80 of that came on one play. but i like your optimism.
  10. soddy daisy. i am assuming you are taking 75 to william blount. probably easiest to get onto 321 in lenoir city. take a right off the exit ramp. you will go through lenoir city and across the bridge over the dam. it goes to two lanes for a while and then when you come to four lanes again you will be in blount county. probably four to five miles (give or take) you will see william blount drive on the right. take this right and william blount drive goes directly in front of the school.
  11. i agree rebelron totally. halls always plays us tough. they had a so so year last year by their standards and we beat them by a touchdown at home. and they will make us beat them passing the ball. i had already thought about that when rouse was still the qb because he would have been a new qb also. but i have been impressed with cade thompson's performance so far and i think the coaches will have us ready. halls has a steady program. they will not be intimidated and they will be ready. tough early test.
  12. being a maryville graduate i have seen a thing or two about a traditional football power going through tough times and the coach getting the blame. george quarles was not the most popular person in maryville when we were 0-4 in 2000. two years later he is going for his third straight state title. let the season play out. if you guys are calling for his head all year what kind of chance do you think him or your team have to be successful? support him and the team and let the season play out. depending on how it goes he may resign at the end of the year. if he does now he is deserting his team and no coach wants to do that. this is not college or the pros.
  13. if sweetwater is ever going to get alcoa this would be the year. sweetwater has a good team and alcoa is rebuilding. sweetwater should take them. but i wouldn't celebrate too much because you will be seeing these guys for the next three years.
  14. lindsey is a good football player and has especially played well on defense. i have watched both of alcoa's games. he made some plays but stewart had 131 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries? i didn't see anything in the first half (which is all stewart played) that indicated anyone was scared. it is hard to be scared when you are up 42-7. i think alcoa probably had lindsey and maybe others spying stewart early in the game and mccord made them pay. that is why it is a team game.
  15. yeah i thought that was him MaryvilleRebels. you are evidently still there. i have a daughter there who is a freshman. wish you would keep an eye on her for me! do you know Jerry Thompson well? if you do....and i know this sounds really dumb. go up to him and say you talked to someone he graduated with who said..."hey.....bo" he will tell you who i am. he will give you two names initials LB and JC. i am JC. don't be shy. he will know exactly what you are talking about. LB said it to him at the game tonight and he (jerry) died laughing. try it. Keep backing the Rebels!
  16. i think i spotted caligula at the maryville alcoa game! that is if his initials are double k? you don't know me i am an old man. i graduated with athletic director jerry thompson. but i have watched maryville football for 35 years and i remember when you played football for a while. also i was at a newphew's all start baseball game a few years back and you hit a home run. OF COURSE THIS IS ASSUMING YOU ARE WHO I THINK YOU ARE. anyway i enjoy your posts. you are a good young man and best of luck to you in college studies. a rebel brother from long ago!
  17. maryville did look good and ran basic stuff. subs looked good. alcoa left most starters in the entire game. dropped the ball a little too much. recovered most of them but lost plays and yardage but for a first game that is expected. alcoa has some good young talent but these freshmen who ran it up on middle school teams last year now know the high school game is a little bit faster.
  18. i think it was william blount who defeated DB last year in the first round.
  19. i think it would be a good compromise too boorelly. and not that big of one to make. the school attempted a compromise a few years back with a black flag and rebels in red letters on it but the students did not buy into it. your idea is much less drastic of a change. i agree with the post that said the kids need to decide. unfortunately when kids feel like they are being forced into something it makes them that much more determined to keep things the way they are. but if it is offensive to anyone particularly our own african american athletes then this type of compromise deserves their serious consideration.
  20. i have attended maryville games for well over thirty years and graduated there in the mid seventies. when i was in school i honestly believe many people did not see the flag as a confederate flag. it was a maryville flag. not that they did not know the difference it was just that if you were attending maryville high it was a maryville flag. maybe in today's world of consumate "political correctness" we should do away with it. i mean after all the maryville schools now call their christmas break "winter" break because the word Christ may offend some of their students of other nationalities. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and perhaps that also applies for not so beautiful things. i cannot say an african american should not be offended because i know only too well what that race has dealt with by ignorant people waving that flag. but i also would hope that a 15 year old kid waving a flag at a football game is not labeled a "racist" for supporting their team.
  21. some of the alcoa people i work with are already talking about the game two years from now when these freshmen are juniors so evidently they are not optimistic. but maryville needs to be focused and ready to play and i feel the coaches will have them ready. this game is always hard fought and this year will not be an exception. maryville has too many guns this year though.

    week o games

the only reason i can think of is more flexibility for scheduling if someone is in need of a game or a team would like to have an open date sometime during the season. it makes even more of a shambles for the jamborees though. like in the blount county jamboree tonight. alcoa, sevier co. and seymour all have week zero games tommorrow night. so there starters likely will not take a snap tonight. of course jamborees usually don't result in much anyway except for getting the kids ready for the friday night routine and revenue for the host schools.
  23. any player can be stopped by an oustanding defender. there were defenders who gave bird and magic problems in the nba. the good scorers who are good all around players can do other things when they are not able to score. passing, rebounding or maybe occupying two defenders at once and finding the open man. they key is letting the game come to you. the problem maryville had last year against wm blount in the regionals is that no one else stepped up when lee was slowed down. i am sure this nick guy could do a good job on lee but it does not mean he is a better all around player.
  24. i agree supersteve. being a player of riggs caliber brings pressure and constant expectations. i did not see red bank play in 2000, but having seen the maryville game last year i have to assume that many of the offensive linemen from that championship team may have graduated. don't get me wrong i am a maryville supporter and they did an outstanding job that night. but following red bank last season they did not appear as dominant as they did the year before in 5A. riggs is a great athlete and ut was fortunate to get him. i have told people all along that he might seriously challenge for playing time this year and the scrimmage results seem to bear that out. i was impressed at the way my team (maryville) responded to the front page story in our paper. but i was equally impressed with the fact that riggs was willing to do it with the candidness he did it with. football is a team sport, and while it is great to be a super star it can also be frustrating when an enrie team expects you to carry them on your shoulders. i am sure riggs did not call our paper and request the story. and if he had refused it then he would have gotten a bad rap for that as well. i thought he carried his noteriety pretty well last year considering all the exposure he got.

    Maryville-D.B.

i think pinkerton is still there. quinn left after the 98 season and became a graduate assistant at ut. he left there last year and went to some college in louisiana to become a defensive coordinator.
