    Maryville-D.B.

cowboys if you and quarles are such good friends and discuss this often what does he say? how does he explain it? what has he done to try and stop it? i didn't say that the db hit was a cheap shot.(i know some did) maybe it was late maybe it wasn't. but even if it was i wouldn't accuse him of a cheap shot. he is a kid. those things happen. and i am sure when he hit rouse he didn't intend to put him out for the season. you seem to know a lot more about the character of our program than we do. the player who got thrown out was throwing a retaliatory punch in the playoff game against central in 1999. to my knowledge we haven't had one thrown out since. i am sure things are said on the field. by just about every team out there. particularly in the trenches. i seriously doubt that maryville or any other school can take credit for originating that. and if the chop blocks and clips are so abundant from maryville i guess the refs just look the other way? whether or not you say we have one of the best programs in the state we take offense to this thug like mentality that you have put on our players. maybe we are clueless. but i also suspect you are not quite as "all knowing" as you present yourself to be.

thanks for that post sportswriter. those games with elizabethton were always hard fought. when we first played them in 97 witten was a sophomore and started on both sides of the ball. and you made a very good point. football is a game of agression. when ted wilson was coaching at maryville in the 60's and 70's (he won three state titles)i cannot count the number of times we beat teams that were bigger than us due to his motiviation. a motivated team is an aggressive team. i was kind of thrown for a loop to see that we were perceived as a dirty team. coach ellis (linemen) and coach quarles are both deacons at my parent's church. while that alone does not make them above reproach knowing these two men as i do makes me certain that dirty play is not in their game plan. i am not saying a maryville player has never taken a cheap shot and gotten penalized for it. what teams hasn't? but in the thirty five years i have been watching them play i have never thought of them as dirty. were bear bryant's teams dirty? no but they would knock you out of your socks, help you up and then be there to do it again the next time you came into their area. that is just football.

gee kingsportindian is everyone up your way into name calling? if those wuss linemen chop every play like you say you are the first one in three years to mention it because most are seniors who have played regularly since they were in tenth grade. and it has never been brought up before. but good luck to you guys anyway. you always have a good season. until the playoffs start.
  4. maryville lost to milan i think the score was 28-6 in 1977. it was a double header championship game played at alcoa and alcoa won the singleA championship in the first game. maryville won the state in 1978 beating brentwood academy in the championship game in nashville. i was able to attend both of those games. that 78 team went undefeated.
  5. what does everyone think about spurrier's debut last saturday. did he run the score up by playing first teamers in the seccond half? will he pay for it when the 49ers play them for real in the regular season? and how successful do you think he will be in the nfl?
  6. fbwiz how many of maryville's practices have you been to this year? and how complacent can you be in the first week of practice? a couple of months ago i read a post of yours saying maryville was the best in the state and would remain that as long as coach quarles stayed. now in your 4a and 5a combined top ten they are not even ranked. the guy who answered my earlier post was right. you just like to stir things up.
  7. i agree with you on the scrimmage concept boorelly and i did not see the one last week. coaches are looking for situational things to put their teams through and get them ready for the season. they want to look at as many players as possible. win lose or draw a scrimmage counts as nothing so why pull out a bag of tricks to try and win it. two defending state champs battling to a tie in a scrimmage is pretty much what one would expect. the actual score of the scrimmage is the last thing on the coaches mind. good luck to both teams this season.
  8. count me as another maryville supporter who also thinks AE has an excellent program that is on the upswing again. i use to work in the media in the mid 80's when leroy thompson and those guys were there. i got to visit with coach sam anderson one night prior to a game. he was a great guy and a good coach. i see similarities between him and stevens. also last year maryville played in the blue cross bowl right after austin east did. as the AE players were leaving the field i noticed several of them shaking hands and encouraging the maryville players which i thought was a real class act. i hope we both get to see each other again this year in murfreesboro.
  9. has anyone heard how maryville did in their scrimmage at soddy daisy?
  10. rebelron the directions on soddy daisy's schedule did not work but i found them at mapquest.com. looks like 75 south to us 11 south. it gets kind of complicated after that so you may want to check mapquest out. the address for the school is 618 sequoyah access rd and that is what you need to put in for your destination address on mapquest. it says about 120 miles and a two hour drive. hope this helps.
  11. not so sure that i would put powell or halls in that mix. both were in the playoffs last year and i cannot remember the last time halls was not in the playoffs. over at maryville we have a healthy respect for both of these teams.

    maryville kickers

can anyone tell me who the kicker and punter will be for maryville this year and how well they will do in replacing bauman and emert?
  13. i hope this does not sound too "cliche" but the keys will be staying focused, taking each game one at a time and forgetting what they have done in the past. of course staying healthy will be another key as well.
  14. whatever maryville was dealing with over 9/11 so was mo west. i left that game knowing that morristown west had outplayed us plain and simple. this has been a good thread. but i and most maryville people have a great deal of respect for west. they are the real deal. i know the players and coaches feel the same. it is very hard to beat a good team twice in a season and that loss gave us an advantage in the rematch i think. not so much the revenge factor just finding things you need to do differently next time. i would not be surprised at all to see maryville and mo west playing in the semis again this year at maryville. this thread proves what we all know and love. the season is upon us! best of luck to mo west. hope you guys stay healthy and we have another good game. or two?
  15. as i said in previous two posts maryville and every team can be beaten. and the last post is correct hillsboro's defense was giving up like 3 points a game. until they played maryville.
  16. yeah hillsboro probably could have beaten maryville but they didnt. i hear everyone saying hillsboro can beat them this year and maybe we will find out it is way too early to tell. but i know that hillsboro's qb gave us the most problems and he is gone. so is the big lineman who committed to tennessee and changed his mind, and the other huge lineman they had. walter fisher is back and is a great lb. as far as hixson beating maryville well i am not so sure. they did give us a good game two years ago but that was two state championships ago for us. and ask cleveland and red bank from your region what we did to them last year in the playoffs. i dont think anyone can sit here today and say "that is the best team in the state". like i said in earlier post any team is beatable. maryville might stay with 5A schools better than you might think depth wise though. they usually dress 65-80 and over 100 when the freshman start dressing for the varsity at the end of the year. and they sub early and often. with a three td lead it is not unusual for the first team to come out even if it is before halftime. so dont be so sure a 5A school would wear us out. we beat william blount 31-0 last year and we saw what they did to db in the playoffs.
  17. i am a maryvillle supporter. but every team is beatable. and we sure don't want to plant in players mind (and neither would the coaches) that they are not beatable. maryville has a fairly tough schedule. after opening at home against alcoa, they have three straight on the road including halls and morristown west. halls is always tough and mtw beat us at home last year. we have a chance to have another great season but lets take it one week at a time.

    Best HS game ever?

actually maryville lost at home in 2000 to alcoa so when mtw beat them in 2001 in had only won a few straight at home. i also remember the 1970 maryville loudon game. two 2A powers. they played at loudon and the redskins took a 21-7 halftime lead. maryville, behind qb tommy beaver, running backs bob hood, gary burchfield, steve mynatt and gary elrod slowly krept back into it and elrod dove over for the winning touchdown in the closing seconds for a 35-28 win. maryville went on to a 12-0 record and won the state championship game over cleveland 42-14 on that same loudon field.
  19. farragut football is going through some lean years like all programs do. but the potential is always there and they could break out of it at any time. i believe maryville punter jason emert did transfer to farragut after christmas last year. as a maryville supporter i believe some people may have forgotten we went 5-5 in 1996 prior to reaching the title game in 97. farragut is a good school with good facilities and they will work their way back. all teams go through down years from time to time.
  20. I agree with you. i would never totally disagree with someone who goes by maryville rebels! and you are right tennessee did choke the lsu game. and kentucky choked the western ky game and the ut game in knoxville last year in basketball. and therein lies the difference between bb and football. in football you can afford one slip up if it is early in the season. two and you don't have a chance. in basketball you can lose as many as you want and get hot at tournament time and have a chance. in football there is constant pressure. in terms of the number of times florida has been in their heads though i totally agree wiith you. and i was at the lsu game last year in atlanta and have never been so disgusted in my life.
  21. i don't totally disagree with you maryville rebels. but i could have sworn ut had alreday gone to that national championship level. in fact i could have sworn they had won a title since ky's heralded bb team.there may have been a time when we needed advice from kentucky basketball but that time has passed.
