  1. I believe DI private schools can give financial assistance, but the recipients are not allowed to participate in TSSAA sports. Much like the DII schools can give non need based financial aid, but those recipients are also not allowed to participate in TSSAA sports.
  2. Not to nitpick, but your original quote was "beat all private schools and DII schools". Obviously incorrect, as Goodpasture and Lipscomb are private schools, now playing in DI. But I'm sure you know that. Not the biggest football fan, but Alcoa will always be the best 3A team in Tennessee, nothing more. And nothing to be ashamed of.
  3. Longtime Brentwood Academy wrestling and assistant football coach Ray Dalton died Thursday night after a lengthy illness and complications from hip replacement surgery. A Franklin native, Dalton began his coaching career in Tifton, Ga., after graduating from the University of Tennessee. He returned to Franklin and coached wrestling while assisting with the football program, then did the same upon joining the staff at Brentwood Academy in 1980. “He was a dear friend and a great coach,†said Carlton Flatt, former football coach at Brentwood Academy. “He coached our defensive front people and he started our wrestling program, won two or three championships. “He was a loyal person, respected authority, a great family man — everything you look for in a coach, in a dad, in a friend. He was the top of the top.†Jeff Jordan played football and wrestled under Dalton at Franklin during the mid-‘70s. “Coach Dalton was a hard coach,†said Jordan, current wrestling coach at Clarksville. “A lot of my friends, he was so tough that he ran some of them off. When I wrestled for him, he wasn’t much of a wrestling coach; he was more of a football coach. He got a lot better, as all of us did. But one thing — he was tough, and he taught toughness to us. “One of the trademarks of me and my teams has been toughness and discipline, ‘stick-to-it-ness’. I attribute a lot of that to Coach Dalton. He taught me some moves, but most of what he taught me was bigger than technique.†Before his retirement in 2007, Dalton coached six individual state wrestling champions at Brentwood Academy — including Bubba Miller and Scott Wells, both two-time state titlists who went on to play football at Tennessee and in the NFL — and won three dual state titles. At Franklin, he coached Butch Burnette to the 185-pound state title in 1976. Dalton, 69, is survived by his parents, Frank and Marian; his wife, Betty Ann; daughters Leah Dalton Berry, Mary Rae Dalton Moore and Julie Dalton Teglas; and four grandchildren. During his final days, Dalton was surrounded by his family and by his former athletes. “As you watched his players, his wrestlers, come in and you saw the respect they have for him, it was an unbelievable thing to watch happen,†Flatt said. “We’ll dearly miss him.â€
  4. As a private school guy, I just hope they stick to Bradleys view of competition instead of Clevelands!
  5. Just to flesh out the lineage and not slight a former teammate, another of Cole's uncles, Chris Wilson, was a two-time state champ for Ryan in 1977-78.
  6. In the Tennessean today there is a short note about Croy committing to Harvard. Good for him!
  7. Oh, I'm fairly certain cbg was just giving Coach Hermann a hard time, knowing how much time Zach spent/spends in the weight room. Hermann will be an asset to any program he helps.
  8. Did they not have a contract for more than one year ? Regardless that is pretty weak on Notre Dame's part if they agreed to come here if Ryan wrestled in Chattanooga last year then they do not come to Nashville. Hold on now...let's not crucify Notre Dame without all the facts. I can't imagine ND not going to Ryan to wrestle after last year's match there, which was a blast. I would bet money the rumors are unfounded. No program BCB is associated with would do something like that.
  9. Trying to clear my calendar for some matches I don't want to miss. What are some of the big match dates? Ryan-MBA, Ryan-Notre Dame, Blackman-Indy, Baylor-McCallie, Soddy-Bradley, Baylor-Bradley (just joking...jeez), others I shouldn't miss? Thanks.
  10. I still remember his heart-breaking loss in the 2002 finals. And I remember the class he displayed after. UTC made a good hire. Hopefully he will do what the others prior did not, establish a tight relationship with the state's high schools and close our boarders.

  13. That should end this thread. I look forward to many of our middle school wrestlers, from around the state, attending next year.
  14. I wouldn't expect them to be wrong in their interpretation of their rule, but the fact that it has to be interpreted means there could be different interpretations, and I have nothing in writing.
  15. I AM wrong, if what the TSSAA just told me on the phone is correct. The key is the coach.
  16. That's not how I read it. The facility used is also mentioned. "No open facilities" would seem to indicate that practice can not occur at the school, or any tssaa school. I'd love to be wrong.
  17. Are we still in the dead period?
  18. Rigger, this will explain it pretty well. http://www.tssaa.org/Handbook/2008WrCalendar.pdf
  19. Just another example, amoung many each year, of why D-1 should be double elimination.
  20. At Father Ryan, I believe the state duals were on 2 mats and the state invitational tournament was held on the other 2 mats.
  21. I had this same injury, running on a golf course and rolled my ankle on a yardage marker. Torn ligaments and a bone chip. It is AT LEAST 6 weeks and there is NO WAY to shoot it up, wrap it up, whatever, and be able to put weight on it, forget wrestling on it. Just physically can't be done. Once it heals, depending on how loose it is, I'd seriously consider surgery to tighten it up. Increases the time off the ankle, but the result is a much tighter joint and it's less likely to roll it again. At least get a couple of opinions. PT the fire out of it and stay in the pool, get a vest and pool run...probably the most boring thing you will ever do...but it helps. With the attitude I've heard you have, you will come out if this stronger.
  22. You know, that's like the third remark about their middle school team I've seen. Tell me what you know about them.
  23. I think it was in the 2003 tournament...someone correct me if I'm wrong. Mocco, from Iowa at the time, was wrestling Coleman from Iowa State. Mocco got called for a slam I think...or something that resulted in an injury to Coleman. Anyway, Coleman was hurt and it was obvious he would have a tough time continuing. All he had to do was say he couldn't go and take the win...and advance to the next round in the NCAA. I saw him talking to his coach, then the ref. He went out, they restarted, then immediately stopped the match and Mocco's hand was raised. Talk about taking the high road. I don't know if Coleman could have All Americaned that year, but I'll always remember the class he, and his coach, showed.
  24. Back in the old days: Cheer, cheer for old Father Ryan You bring the whiskey, I'll bring the wine Send the freshman out for gin Don't let a sober sophmore in We never stagger, we never fall We sober up on grain alcohol While the loyal faculty is locked in the study hall. Fight, Fight, Fight
