  2. What's up with Franklin's Offense? Granted they've played three excellent teams, but a 9 point average on offense isn't going to get it! Is it the O-Line? The QB? The RBs? The WRs? The play calling?
  3. Beech 42 Hendersonville 10 Blackman 14 Lincoln County 0 Centennial 30 Page 7 Congratulations to Centennial. To have scored 30 points makes me sit up and say Hmmmm! While Not in 6-5a I thought it was worth noting the scores of the other two games listed above. Given Hendersonville is always a sleeper till playoff time, I was stunned to see they gave up 42 to Beech. I know nothing of LC this year, it is still a surprise to see the Blackman of the past three years shut out a LC team!
  4. Thus the name ... Franktown!!!! What type of of offense do the McCallie Bluebloods... I mean Blue Tornadoes run these days?
  5. Great Game! Exactly what you would have thought, two great defenses making great plays when they counted. Turnovers and penalties played a part in all four scores. Both teams very poised almost in play-off fashion. Some good looking athletes on both teams, for Hillsboro #5 Jaques Seward was a standout...speed, power, moves, great body lean when he finished...the whole package. #3 Eric Gordon was a handful as well...obviously a leader...great to watch he and Franklin's #11 Casey Dykes go at it thru the night. Hillsboro a little better at running the ball between the tackles, both teams very fast to the corners with Franklin's #5 Keylo Lee matching Jaques Seward run for run. Franklin seemed to go to a smaller line in the 3rd Q and had a little more success running the ball, with a couple of 10+ yrd runs. Both QB's looked poised, #9 Graham Nichols for Franklin threw well on the night with a few dropped balls or errant passes being where they needed to be high or away from the defender. #15 Mark Arent for Hillsboro threw mostly swing passes, as Casey Dykes for Franklin was bird-dogging him and had several near interceptions on balls thrown accross the middle. The real story though was defense. Undoubtedly these are two of the best in the state! Also Hillsboro has a great kicker ... K/Os in the endzone and I'd guess he had a 44-50 yrd punting average! As to the tie... what a great way to end a defensive battle and begin a rivalry!!
  6. Could tonight be the night .... Will BA fall to a Williamson Co team? Why is it that Franklin had to play McCallie next week instead of BA. One day .... One day FHS will get their shot at the Granny White Wonders!!!!
  7. I look for a lower score than most are predicting. Two tough defenses, first game jitters, turnovers, penalties ... might come down to a field goal. Boro has the home turf advantage but look for a huge crowd to travel to Green Hills for a litttle friday night shopping and smash mouth football! Franklin did a pretty good job of shutting down MBA last friday in a scrimmage, Lot of pressure on Grahm Nichols tonight to take the reigns of this team ... lets hope the OLine can get him some relief. Franklin 13 Hillsboro 10
  8. He'll have a huge impact wherever he ends up. He could always come up with some trick play to pull off a win at Franklin. Really knows how to use his team's talents, willing to change his scheme to adapt to the talent. Hope he stays in Williamson County!
  9. Tennessean Article While I know very little about the former Fairview Coach, the following speaks volumes: Several of his new players were excited at the news, hoping Matykiewicz would ditch the team’s reliance on the wishbone running attack.“We didn’t have the biggest line last year, and you need a big line to run the wishbone,” said running back Wayne Coffee. “We need to work with what we have, not try to shove what we have into a system,” said linebacker John Ross. “He’s a young guy. He seems like he’ll be cool.” The coach is right when he says Centennial is a sleeping giant. If all goes well with a creative offense at Centennial and the new hire at Independence keeps their offense dynamic, Williamson County will become a huge hotbed in 5A!
  10. All- County - local sportswriters / staff for the local paper All - Region - Coaches selection with region winner getting the most players then #2 getting second most, etc. All- Midstate - Tennessean Sports Writers and Staff All - State TFCA- Member Coaches vote - my guess they vote for the players who have been recruited by the biggest / best schools. As long as you have "potential" in the eyes of a recruiter (lineman 6'7 285lbs) then it doesn't matter if you can tie your shoelaces. Or in the case of a receiver if you're 6'3" and have a great vertical leap and 4.4 speed than they look past the fact that you dropped 2/3rds of the balls thrown to you! Speaking in general terms not about this years selections or this player... don't know anything about Lavergne. Its easier for a coach to justify a vote by saying "Well, he has offers from 5 SEC schools" than by quoting any stats!
  11. OK thanks... and the defensive score is whether you maintain your gap discipline?
  12. In the All-MidState selections, a couple of the First Team OL were said to be "graded" at 90% on offense and one was "graded" at 93% on defense. Can someone explain this grading system to me?
  13. Looks like 15-0 and a state championship! What do you think SGunit30?
  14. Best of luck to you sgunit30 .... was glad to honor your request ...looking forward to watching the 15-0 Rebels next year!
  15. What I think would be ideal is Coach Nowell to put together a package where he is OC and Asst HC and he brings in an up and coming HC candidate that takes the responsibility of dealing with the parents and the politics and leaves him to deal with the Xs and Os. Similar to a President working with a CEO, the new HC would bow to his experience in decision making and would be brought along till Coach Nowell decided to retire. Not sure what Coach Clayton's plans are for the future, if he is moving on then I think Coach Webb would be the heir aparent at FHS but if he plans to stay long term, Coach Webb might like to team up with Coach Nowell. They are a dynamic duo.
  16. Stan's right about the lens: The Canon f2.8 70-200 IS USM is a must. It sells around $1,600 to $1,800. As long as you are having to make the "jump into debt" to get the lens, I would recommend spending an additional $400 or so to get the Canon 30D or pick up a used 20D. You can probably buy a used 20D around $800. Having researched this for almost a year .... I felt like there was enough of an improvement over the Rebel to spend the extra. But if you're serious about shooting HS sports you should probably be prepared to spend $3,000(camera, lens, compact flashcards, external hard drive). I know its alot of money but if you work hard you'll have it recaptured in a year or less. Williamson County High School Sports
  17. I think Webb would be the heir aparent if Clayton were to leave. So my guess is that he would stay put.
  18. Couple of comments on this string about Franklin's QB situation and Coach Clayton. As to QB situation, I've said before that Franklin's Matt Solima and Michael Mikrut were special QBs that don't just grow on trees. Having seen both of them progress through all 4 years, I can tell you that both Sellars and Nichols are better this year as sophomores than either Matt or Michael were as sophomores. Great things are ahead for both! As to impressions of Coach Clayton, remember that he too had big shoes to fill in those of Danny Nowell. I guess it depends on your style, as to how wide open you like to see an offense vs. smash mouth, and how well you adapt your play calling to other strengths and weaknesses in your offense. Keep in mind too that Clayton is in a pretty tough fraternity of coaches in Williamson County. If I had to choose up sides and were picking an OC I'd go 1) Nowell 2) Rector 3) Crawford 4) Smith 5) Clayton. Not a bad group to chose from!
  19. Disparity.... now there's a new word I've not seen on coacht ....i:ll have to remember that one....
  20. Best single game performance: Tim Johnson, Lincoln Co. 1982 State Championship v. Gallatin ??
  21. 1. Greatest lovers of High School Football there are 2. Devoted to their trade 3. Human (and still 9 out of 10 times I complain live, film exonerates their call)
  22. I think this is the spiciest game of the four. Gallatin has been a "rock of steadiness" all year. Fourty some seniors ...leadership, tradition, coaching, depth... no reason whatsoever as to why they shouldn't go deep as many predict. But something tells me that the risk taker in Coach Rector might just have enough up his sleeve to pull an upset here.
  23. Franklin has had thrilling wins in the playoffs against Region 5. We all remember the Gallatin game (the mud and the lights) Hendersonville (#4 seed) going for two to win in overtime and getting snuffed( Jon Kirn). Antioch losing in the final minutes to the "Halfback Throwback"(Jonathon Haines). Hunters Lane(huge line) ahead 24-7 at half and Franklin's Oline coming back and pounding away to win 28-24. When it comes to this time of year and this level of talent ...it all boils down to heart!
  24. Gotta disagree here ... I think Freedom has always had great talent and great coachig from Coach Lane and the Cowboys program. Change the atmosphere through a dynamic coach with a 'fun" spread offense and your "Whipping Boy" turns into a "perennial power" very quickly!! Raise the competitive level there and the entire Region 6-5A has to turn it up a notch. Oh and the student body there has always been some of the most spirited year in and year out!!
  25. If you check the tape, you see that Mac Hibbet strips the ball because Centennial fakes the dive to the 2 hole and then tries to counter back to the 3 hole. Hibbet has just enough time to come off the corner and get a hand in the exchange. Centennial was getting 4 yards on every carrry .... why the counter razzle dazzle... just pound away and you score!
