  1. I think we all expected Karns to take a step back after Bishop graduated, but they looked terrible against HVA. Gonna be a long season for the Beavers.
  2. Mav, you guys do have a couple of gamebreakers, but overall team speed is lacking. I don't think that's anything new though. You guys won a state title last year, and you definitely didn't have a stable full of track stars. The WR you mentioned was actually run down on that play. The only reason they flagged it for tripping was because the DB's feet got tangled up with his. It was the right call, but it's likely that he would have been tackled (or shoved OB) on the play anyway.
  3. Agreed, Mav. Great win for Powell tonight. These two teams definitely aren't the teams they were last season, but it's also Week 1. Here are some of my takeaways. AC is going to miss having a back like Noe to spell Moog. #2 may be fast, but he was a non-factor. I'll say it - Moog is still a load, but Wheeler was the better back tonight. Hall is no Martinez, and Rodgers is no Potts, but they both have arm talent. I'm anxious to see how they progress throughout the season. Both teams have WRs that have some giant shoes to fill. Both teams have solid offensive lines, but I don't think AC's is nearly as good as it was last season. AC is really going to miss having a kicker that can put it in the end zone. Powell made them pay for that tonight.
  4. I don't disagree with the history, but to say that AC was innocent tonight is certainly a homer call. AC's offensive line was mixing it up a lot in the 4th quarter, and #75 certainly got in a couple of shoves and cheap ones (was flagged for one).
  5. Both teams had their share of foolishness in the 2nd half tonight.
  6. So here's a question - Since when does a defensive PI penalty on a TD pass get enforced on the ensuing kickoff?
  7. Mav, you guys just aren't as good as you were last year. Hall is good, but he's no Martinez. He also doesn't have any WRs like Vowell, and Moog doesn't have a backup like Noe to share the load with. You also don't have a kicker that can boot it through the end zone, and that was an unsung weapon as well.
  8. Gillam better get ahold of his O-linemen. That's two plays in a row...
  9. 28 unanswered from the Panthers. They lead it 35-14 with 6:30 to play. AC definitely not the team they were last year, but it is week 1.
  10. Powell is absolutely manhandling AC up front in the second half.
  11. I'm not connected to the Powell program like I've been in years past, so I don't have much of an insider's perspective. Powell's offense will look quite a bit different with Potts and those WRs gone. That said, they have a veteran offensive line, their new QB is a load, and he will bring a very different dynamic to the offense. I think the running game will be a much bigger factor for the Panthers this season between #2 and #13. Defensively, the Panthers are a veteran group. Foust was their biggest loss, but I believe they return 8 or 9 guys who started from a season ago (led by Soles at DE). They've been a bit undersized in the front 7 the past few seasons (outside of Walter Nolen), and they have struggled to slow down teams that can run the football effectively between the tackles (e.g., West). I don't expect Powell to win this game, especially with the question marks in the passing game, but you never know. Both of these teams are accustomed to winning, and given the recent history between these two programs, I wouldn't be shocked to see it come down to the final possession.
  12. A lot of others have said exactly what I've been feeling. Just awful news. I'll never know what Donovan was going through, but please be kind to others. And teach your kids/grandkids to show that same genuine kindness. You'd be surprised what a smile or a kind word/gesture can do, even for a complete stranger. The world desperately needs more of that.
  13. There's your poll answer. Couldn't agree more. It's just a LOT more visible now, thanks to social media.
  14. Bizarre timing here, but I wish him the best of luck. It was already going to be a tough year for Karns now that Bishop is gone, but this doesn't help either.
  15. Great to hear, especially this time of year.
  16. AC is going to be interesting to watch this season, much like Powell. They graduated a lot of pieces, but the cupboard isn't bare. They should have a pretty decent offensive line, which should help as they break in a new starter at QB. That said, I think Moog's health is going to be pretty key to their success. He's one heck of a running back, and they'll have a very tough time replacing him if he doesn't fully recover. I also wonder about their defense, and how they will compare to last season. Their improved defensive play was a real catalyst for the season they had in 2022.
  17. Not trying to defend anyone's position here, but isn't that exactly what college football has become, especially in this NIL era? We shouldn't act surprised to see similar impacts at the prep level because we've allowed this to happen. Maybe not you specifically, but collectively, fans have forgotten that these are kids, and sports are a means to teach these kids those valuable life lessons that you mentioned. We've allowed these changes to creep into football, and other sports, and there's no turning back.
  18. "Could" Powell have won the title in 2021 without Walter? Yup. That offense was loaded. I'm not sure that they "would" have without him though. If we're gonna play this game, I think a similar argument could also be made for Powell in 2010. Would they have won it at all that year if Dy'shawn Mobley had played in November? Again, we'll never know, but I'd like to think so. Walter took their defense from mediocre to very good, once he got into game shape, which took the better part of the regular season. His addition gave them a huge advantage against a team like West (as opposed to someone like Page), who didn't really have the ability to stretch the field and just wanted to run the ball down your throat.
  19. Steven Soles is going to be fun to watch on defense too.
  20. Obviously Powell's offense is going to look different this year, with the losses at QB and WR. Outside of that, they have a lot of returning starters on both sides of the ball. Both RBs and most of the offensive line are back, along with 2/3 of the defensive starters (including Soles at DE). It'll be interesting to see what they end up having at QB. They had a freshman QB last year who looked to have a ton of potential (dual threat guy with a big arm), but we'll see if he progresses. Tough schedule though - road games against OR, Farragut, and West, plus home games against Anderson Co, McMinn Co, and Central.
  21. I think HTV is just saying that none of those teams have a returning starter at QB, and none of them had a budding star backing up that starter.
  22. More context from KNS. I don't have a beef with what TSSAA did in this instance. Based on the only video evidence that has been made public so far, I think they got it right. This didn't turn into an all-out brawl, so I think the punishments were reasonable. I certainly think you could argue that the suspensions were too short, but it is what it is. That said, I'm interested to hear Fulton's side on this. I'm not sure how anyone can defend what the three attacking players did to the girl who made that layup.
  23. Wow, that is heartbreaking. Loved talking with him over the years. RIP Willie...
