  1. This Year I would say Christian Brothers. Both Melrose and East outplayed them. But in both games they won on "B.S." calls. Melrose had them down 4th and 15 and the rfs bailed them out with a horrindous pass interference call. The next week Memphis East trailed 27-26 in OT when east scored on a game winning 2 point conversion to win 28-27 before the refs waited until the kid scored to call a 15 yard clipping penalty on an off Tackle play. So east failed on its PAT form the 18 yard line. CBHS should really be 2-2 instead of 4-0
  2. I do apologize coacht for getting into the Public privte debate, with all do respect, how can we candidly discuss 1A and 2A fotball withmentioning Ezell, Goodpasture, Lipscomb, USJ...Et al. I do not intend to get off on the deep end about the Public-Private debate. But I had to say what I said just to give credibility to my Post. I simply wanted to show that Mitchell was actually as good as any of the other Public 2A schools in the state lay year.
  3. Galilee, 1st of all congrats on making it to the state finals. People on here are telling you that Mitchell still has something to prove. Stop looking for respect here on Coacht.com, If you look at The top 6 teams in the state in class 2A according to Sonny Moores Power ratings. You guys played Lipscomb as well as any of the other Top Teams in the State. Lets look at the Anthology of Lipscombs 2002 State title Run. Round 2) 25-0 @ Chattanooga Tyner #2 in the State QTR FINALS 29-0 @ Goodpasture was #1 in state Semi Finals 30-2 VS Sweetwater was #3 in the State State Finals 28-0 VS Mitchell was unranked in the week 10 TSWA Poll. Yet these people try to convence you that you looked worst than the rest of the road kill left behind Lipscomb. Look at Ezell last year in 1A look at Goodpasture last year in 2A. This is why the private schols need their own gig. They have an unfair advantage over the other smaller schools. I dont have a problem with privtes playing in Division 1, As long as they play 4A or 5A Ball. Let Lipscomb play Hillsboro in a nice westside tussle. Let Goodpasture play Hendersonville in a good ole Noth Nashville Battle, and Let Ezell Play Riverdale in a good ole I-24 showdown. My ex-Girlfriend grew up with Ron Mercer in East Nashville and she attended Hume Fogg. Her dad was complaining 10 years ago bout goodpasture recruiting Ron Mercer and giving him free tuition and other perks to attend. Mercer lived right off of Gallatin Pike just south of Madison and shoulda gone to Stratford with his Boy Arcente Broom, who now coaches at Strattford. The Privates will continue to dominate the small school ball. Look at CPA, they have had like 12 players in the SEC now.
  4. Well I don't eat salt because it causes High blood pressure. Nontheless all you did was further prove how much of a bigot you were. Besides Melrose and East have won way more than anyone you named other than Maryville. Kingsport DB, Knox Cental, Morristown west Have combined for 0 state finals apperances. East and Melrose have combines for 5. I guess that Pepper was seasoning enough without that salt you spoke of. I believe most people could care less about race when it comes to rooting for teams. I pulled for Melrose when they Played Hillsboro because they were from Memphis, not because Melrose is a black school. Also, I pulled for MUS when they lost to John Henderson and Pearl-Cohn because they were from Memphis. So I suppose you didn't root for Knoxville Austin-East because they were all black despite them being from your area.
  5. JPats I challange you to read everything I have posted on this topic. If you can find anywhere that I picked Melrose to win the state championship then I will send you $100. Dont waste your time. You wont find it, because its not there. They already have 2 state title here recently and are very very talented, and dicipled. If you are in anyway incenuating that prodominately black schools cant win state titles then that simply makes you a bigot and are ingnorant. Memphis East has just as many white kids enrolled as melrose "0" Both are fine programs and are as solid as any in the state. Ask ole coach Helton at Knoxville central about that ole undiciplined team that beat 'em and won that beautiful Goldball in the football office as memphis East. I just wanted you see just how ignorant you are. PS. I guess JPats= Jefferson County Patriots, since they are so darn diciplined when was the last time they played in the clinic bowl.
  6. There is no gap between memphis football and the rest of the state. Only in class 5A has the memphis metro area found it difficult to compete. Memphis has way fewer large suburban schools. The shelby county school system is 5A football in West tennessee for the most part. Memphis overton and Memphis Central have each elected to move up in class to play 5A football. JCM has also moved down. Memphis teams do as well as any other metro area in the state in all other classes. Here are all of the state finalist in the past 7 years from the memphis Metro area. (public only) since ECS and Briarcrest, Byrne seem to win DII titles every year I wont count those. Melrose 1996 1 Munford 1996 2 Melrose 1997 3 Melrose 1998 4 MemphisEast 1999 5 MemphisEast 2000 6 Covington 2000 7 Ridgeway 2002 8 Mitchell 2002 9 9 state finals apperances in 7 years is not bad. PS. Because Maryville has the top program in the state, does that mean the Knoxville metro area has the best football?
  7. 4Afan, even if you were correct about turmoil being part of coaching. He was not the coach under the previous regime. He came in and brought dignity and dicipline to a program that had been lacking in that area for quite some time. Even when they were winning State titles under Tim Thompson, they still lacked a great deal of dicipline. Malcomb Jones acted an even bigger fool than Tim Thompson. Nonetheless, Turmoil is not part of coaching. Brentwood Academy's whole athletics program was placed on probation a few years ago. That certainly has to be considered turmoil. Would you say then that BA was not well coached because they had turmoil? That is ridiculus. Melrose may have been the most prepared and organized team in the memphis area last season.
  8. Ego you played at Briarcrest right. E-mail me at Bro_haynes357@yahoo.com also thats my screen name for yahoo Instant messager as well.
  9. How can you question Melrose's Coaching. Kenny Ingram Probably deserved Coach of the year honors statewide. He did receive region 8-4A coach of the year honors. He took a team that was 6-4 and had alot of turmoil and wasn't even ranked in the preseason Commercial Appeal Dandy Dozen poll last year, and ripped his way to a 13-1 record lossing 7-6 to Nashville Hillsboro in the state semi-finals. Melrose then went on to run away with the class 3A Boys state title in track with only 1 senior. According to several recruiting publications- Melrose has 3 of the states top 12 players. Hillsboro has a good program. As a matter of fact they probably should be in the top 2 preseason if for no other reason that they have been to consecutive state finals. However once again alot of people look for opperatunities to "sleep" on the Memphis teams. Memphis East has accomplished more in the past 5 years than any other program in the state other than Maryville. As a matter of fact Memphis East is the only team in the state with a 4A title in the past 5 years other than Maryville. Just look at their record 1 state title-2 finals-3 semi finals- 5 QTR finals in 5 years is unmatched by anyone other than Maryville. Furthermore, I respect what john Cooley has done at Ridgeway. However They will soon find out the same thing melrose found out. That the gap between 3A and 4A is bigger than the gap between any other move up in classification. Melrose made 3 consecutive finals apperances between 1996-1998 in class 3A. they moved up to 4A in 1999 and where hammered by Memphis East (44-20 @Melrose) giving melrose their worst home loss in quite some time finnishing the season with a medeocre 7-4 record lossing 20-19 in the 1st round of the 4A playoffs to a solid but not great Dyersburgh team. In other word, Its not much difference between The state chapmps in 1A (CPA) and the champs in 2A (Lipscomb), as a matter of fact, Its not much difference between 4A and 5A. Most people believe that Maryville has been the best team in the state reguardless of class in at least 2 of the past 3 years. Maybe Brentwood Academy and Brentwood High were a little better last year. But I am completely convinced that the Maryville 2001 group was indeed the best team in the state reguadless of class and so was the 1998 maryville team with Toki McCray at QB. Lets not also forget, this that even though ridgeway won the 3A title they lost 40-0 in a 1 QTR jamboree last year to no other than Memphis East. Both Melrose nad East would have gone unbeaten in class 3A, so would Moriistown West, Hillsboro, And a few other 4A notibles. Ridgeway is in for a rude awakening. By the way, Whitehouse won the 1997 state title and i believe they lost in the 1998 semi-finals. Everyone in Robertson county called for the civil defense sirens to be activated for there upcomming move to 4A. They cant beat Peal-Cohn for the league title, and Hillsboro ripped them a New you know what in the 4A qtr's 2 years ago. My 4A top 10 based on what I know to be true. 1. Maryville- Until proven otherwise 2. Hillsboro- Slight edge - they host the semi's in 03 3. Melrose- The states Most talented team in any class 4. Knoxville Cental- proven contenders 5. memphis East- 15 thousand saw them play Melrose last year. 6. Pearl-Cohn- 2nd most talented team after Melrose 7. Morristown West- Lock to make the semi's from reg 1/2 8. Cleveland- Seems- ready to return to glory 9. Tennessee High- is just a good regular season team 10. Ridgeway- Will Huggins may be the top QB in the state. A top 10 team sure, but only good enough for 3rd in this league, 8-4A

  11. Marquis Davis made the Automatic qualifing standard on saturday as he blazed to a 10.10 in the mens 100M finals in Austin this weekend. After winning the 100M Davis turned around an anchored the Mississippi State 4X100 relay to the fastest time in the country this year 39.16. Davis also finished 2nd at the NCAA meet in the 200m 20.66 which is incredible for an indoor time.
  12. Marquis Davis-Memphis Hamilton Obvious choice, its not the 10.50 and 20.84 which are indeed state record. you have to take under consideration that he wasn't pushed until the US junior Meet in Denton Texas. He ran 10.13(FAT of course) losing to lenard Scott(10.11) of Tennessee in a photo finnish. he was the US 200 meter junior champ, and finnished 2nd at the pan-am junior meet. all this was as a 18 year old fresh out of High school. He is now a junior at Mississippi state. He has already run 19.99 wind aided. and ran 20.27 at the 2000 Olympic trials. He broke the US junior 100M record at a Meet at Arkansas State. He ran 9.98 and would have been the first 18 year old in the world to ever run a leagle wind sub 10 but USA track and field said that if a US or world record is set, the athlete must be drug tested within 24 hours of the mark to get credit. There was no test conducted. However if you go to the Arkansas State Track page, he has the 100 and 200 track records, the old 100m record was Ed Preston 1976 olympic Gold Medalist (10.05) which was the also the American record at that time. Sean Waller-Hunters Lane- probably the most complete sprinter from the state of Tennessee since Ramon Clay, (Also a Hunters Lane Grad). Clay would be #1 here but he graduated in 1993 so he is not in the last 5 years. However Ramon is currently ranked #1 in the world in the 200M. Nonetheless, Waller coulda set the state record in the 400 meters had he not been conserving energy for the 200M race later that evening.I know waller could have run at least a 46.50 prolly a lot faster than that. I have only seen him pushed twice. My niece runs at Memphis East, we went to see her run in Mobile last year. there was some kid who was incredibke in the 400 Meters that beat sean, and the other was his junior year at the state meet when he finnished second to Chris Jones who he had beaten as a sophmore. Chris Jones-Riverdale Chris Jones is probably the best quatermiler in 20 plus years, but he was not as complete a sprinter as Waller. But Jones will be a sub 45 quatermiler some day. I think he ran 46.82 at riverdale, just off the state mark by a hair. Mardy Scales-Centennial- Unforunately for scales he had to run against Davis in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He ran 10.68 in the 100 meters which is a dynamite time considering the brevity of the Tennessee Track Season, and the weather is not all that great until May. Florida nad Texas have much longer track seasons and Much much Better weather, not to mention great great compettion even at your local dual meet there will 2 or 3 teams running 40. in the 4x100. so Scales is now showing how great he is he is one of the top short distance sprinters in NCAA. UT made a mistake passing on him. They did go after davis, but he didn't enitially have the grades. He finnaly got it together and is now at Mississippi State. Kendrick Triggs- Memphis Central (junior at Ole miss) last but certainly not least is Kendrick Triggs now one of the top sprinters in the SEC. He ran 20.81 last week at the Ole miss, Mississippi state, alabama, Auburn Quadrangular meet. He qualified in the 200 meters last year at the NCAA meet he ran 21.31 in 2000 while winning the state meet. He Beat Mardy scales in the 200, But finnished 3rd in the 100meter losing to Mardy Scales.

  14. You guys (HILLSBORO) had a super team last year. I see Stann Trott saying that Hillsboro has an advantage by having been to the state finals before. No disrespect Stan, But Memphis East has been to the state twice, Melrose 3 or 4 times and Knoxville central has been as well as Cleveland 3-4 times and coach porter's group from whitehouse. Why do seem to feel that Hillsboro has some type of advantage. If i recall, the last 2 times Hillsboro was on the road for playoff games, you guys lost them both Maryville, and @ memphis East in the Semi finals in 2000. You dont really know anymore about whats going on here in west Tennessee than we do about whats going on in The Mid state area. The green and Gold is strong, But I should't have to remind you or 2000 4A mr Football Alvin fite of the 44-15 game the last time you guys traveled west! Region 8 and Region 3 are the strongest leagues in class 4A.
  15. They both signed with Alabama State. I have no Idea what they have done since they go there.
  16. I, as most people know am a Memphis-East Mustang fan. The Melrose-East game was the best atmosphere for a high school game I ever been around. No fans are as good as the Melrose fans. I was at the 96,97, and 98 state finals, As a matter of fact, I go to the Saturday session(3A-5A) of the state finals every year. Melrose clearly out drew Whitehouse despite it being a local game for Whitehoue. And in 1996 they without question had the Tyner crowd out numbered 5 to 1, Melrose had 10,000 many of which were Tennessee State Students from Memphis, Tyner had maybe 1500-2000 fans despite the fact that Chattanooga is much closer to Nashville than is Memphis. Melrose is a fine program. There troubles are behind them and Coach Ingram has done a fabulous job. Just listen to some of the comments you make on here. Their are a lot of programs across the state that corruption is widespread. I hear no one ragging Brentwood academy who was also penalized a few years back. No one can give me any relevant complaints about the current state of the Melrose football program. Both east and Melrose will continue to be successful, well organized and well coached teams. Don't rip the Melrose program because it is not in the most suburban atmosphere. Most of you guys seem "culturally challenged" not one of the people that have posted negative comments about Melrose can post any absolutely factual information about any negative mishaps or any type of criminal activity that has taken place at Melrose. Home field is predetermined. So when you say "I am suprised the TSSAA allowed Melrose home field advantage" what you are really saying is that you indeed are suprised that the TSSAA was not racist, and discriminatory towards the Predominantly Black school "MELROSE" and found some way to screw those kids out of what they have earned. Lets all have fun, root for our favorite teams and try not to be offensive or negative to other fans. [Edited by memphisplayer on 11-9-02 5:45A]
  17. east has not had 2 scrimages. east beat CBHS last saturday 2-1. You county school guys constantly come on here without facts. Last year one guys says he heard east got killed by houston and east kids walked off the field. Well i was their east won 3-2 last year. furthermore east kids didn't have any numbers on the mesh jerseys. so how could you determine if the kids were varsity or not. Face it East kicked Houston's But
  18. East scored 1st, then felix broke the long run. Felix's TD tied the scrimage at 1TD appiece. Houston got the ball 1st and didn't score, East threw the TD on its 1st offensive series. furthermore the 70 yard TD run by east to go ahead 3-1 was by a very talented freshman. and the Last TD to go ahead 5-1 was by a sophmore who is #5 at halfback. East completely dominated the line of scrimage even when the startes were in. But I will admitt the last 2 TD's were east JV kids vs Houstons JV kids so the varsity won 3-1 [Edited by memphisplayer on 8-10-02 4:55A]
  19. white station is without question the most improved team in the state. they wont make the playoffs, but they really looked much improved yesterday vs Memphis central in the double header scrimage at crump stadium yesterday. I dont know what happended between covington and Memphis Hamilton in the second scrimage
  20. GENERALLY I DONT THINK THE COACHES ARE NECCISARILY LYING ABOUT THE TIMES RUN BY THE ATHLETES. ITS KINDA LIKE THE 2000 FLORIDA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. WHATS A VOTE, HANGING CHAD, PREGNANT CHAD EXT.... I AM A GOOD EXAMPLE.I PLAYED OFFENSIVE TACKLE IN COLLEGE. I RAN A LEGIT 4.92 40 WHICH WAS THE AVG OF 3 WATCHES THE BEST OF THE 3 WAS 4.88 AND THE SLOWEST WAS 4.95 WITH ONE TIME IN THE MIDDLE SOMEWHERE. I ACTUALLY RAN THAT ON A TRACK IN TENNIS SHOES AT GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL. BUT THE NEXT WEEK, MITCH DAVIS WHO IS CURRENTLY THE HEAD COACH AT MEMPHIS OVERTON TIMED ME @ 5.17/5.21 ON TWO ATTEMPTS. DOES THAT MEAN I FIBBED ABOUT THE 4.88 I RAN THE PREVIOUS WEEK AT GERMANTOWN. NO IT DOESN'T, OBVIOUSLY A TRACK IS FASTER THAN GRASS AND A TRACK WITH SPIKES IS EVEN FASTER THAN A TRACK WITH TENNIS SHOES. SO UNLESS THE SURFACE AND TYPE OF SHOES WORN IS STATED NEXT TO THE TIME RUN, THEIR WILL BE NO REAL STANDARD. I WAS BASICLY 2.5 TENTHS OF A SECOND SLOWER ON GRASS. SO HYPOTHETICALY A KID CAN CLAIM HE RUNS A 4.3, WHERE AS HIS TRACK COACH MAY HAVE CLOCKED HIM @ 4.38 WITH HIM FOOLING AROUND BEFORE TRACK PRACTICE WITH SPIKES. HE GETS TO COLLEGE AND MAY RUN 4.65 ON GRASS ELECTRONICALLY. SAME KID DIFFERENT SURFACE AND SHOES IN ADDITION TO A DIFFERENT TIMMING METHOD.
