  1. Sorry, I don't mean to spoil anyone's fun, but I just can't get excited about this tournament. It's always cold and miserable. They should rename it the Beech Ice Bowl! It's always cold or raining or both, but definitely without a doubt always cold. There's nothing worse than playing or watching a softball game in freezing weather, let alone playing or watching several games in a row. This tournament has been cursed by the softball Gods. JMO
  2. Bigchief is right. This has got to be the weakest district in any class. Almost every team Hunters Lane plays couldn't beat a good 10u travel team. And NO, that's not an exaggeration.
  3. Catchman, you always seem very angry. Life is too short. Lie down on the couch and we'll talk about it. But I must say that everything you wrote was pretty much true.
  4. How about a group hug? And smiley faces for all.

Hey Jen56803, all I'm sayin' is maybe you guy's should look into gettin' a buddy's list thing goin' or somethin', ya know, yeah, I think that would be a good thing. You could even invite your little umpire pal, O.K., GREAT!
  6. What can I say Motlowshortstop4; you're right. And when you're right you're right. And you're right!

Don't any of yall have telephones? Will someone please make this thread go away?
  8. Well Father Ryan Coach, looks like they just put you in the "pressure cooker". Anything less than a state championship will be considerd a failure.
  9. Something that always sticks out in my mind when I think about a really well coached high school team is the Goodpature High School team, probably around 97-98. Not exactly sure about the year or the team that I watched them play, but I think the Goodpasture coach was a women. Anyways, Goodpasture braught so much energy to the game that you just new they were gonna win. I knew nothing about the Godpasture team or the team they were playin, but the kids on the Goodpasture side never sat on the bench. They stayed on the fence yelling, singing, chanting, and anything else you could possibly think of to get themselves fired up. They even had their own little individual chant for each batter. You could literally feel the energy. And I'm sure it comes as no surprise that they stomped a mud hole in the opposing team's butt. Now I know you were probably looking for more X's and O's type stuff, but I think a motivated team is as important as anything. I also think it says a lot about the coach. JMO

EzellSoftball04, like STD said, their was a Gold Nationals that year, so that's that. Also, if Gold Nationals and 18u A Nationals were played the same week, you wouldn't see many head coaches at 18u A Nationals, so that's that on top of that. One more thing, maybe you should read Strikethree's post again because what you said didn't make any since. And could you post some of the accomplishments that the players from the old 18u Eagles had in college. I know their were some great players on that team but I never heard much about them after they left for college. Thanks in advance.

Strikethree, the 16u Nashville Eagles did win the ASA State although they finished I think fifth in the NSA State. They had a respectable team, but I don't think winning the NSA Eastern World Series is a huge accomplishment. When you only finish fifth in the NSA State but then win the Eastern World Series it makes you wonder how many quality teams were their. I would guess not many. Maybe they will prove everyone wrong this year. I think their pitcher quit the team, so if they can win without their ace this summer you gotta tip your hat to 'em. My prediction is they will be back playing B-ball and every NSA tournament they can find. Now, as for the old 18u Nashville Eagles that won the ASA 18u A Nationals, that's a pretty big accomplishment. Well, not all that big because the 18u A Nationals is really the B Nationals if you wanna get technical. The true A teams are play 18u Gold. JMO
  12. STD, you said many will disagree with what you wrote. Well, count me as one that does agree.
  13. Your right, sorry about that.
  14. You guys have to be kidding. Pitcher is without any shadow of a doubt the hardest position on the field. Catcher is a distant 2nd and then take your pick between third and short. Remember, "what's the hardest position?" is the question, not which position does your daughter play.
  15. They will be good enough to beat the extremely weak teams that they will have to play to get to the state.

O.K. there are probably 10 different nighthawk teams in all different age groups. Which of these many teams do these terrible unjustified things to catchman's precious little angels? Catchman, why all the hate, especially during the holidays? I think you should really consider rec. ball, catch my drift, no pun intended. And I'm not trying to play devil's advocate here, but I don't think there is a competitive ASA A team in this state or probably anywhere that would turn down a great athlete just because that would mean someone's spot being taken. Now with all that being said, the nighthawks have some really ugly uniform colors! Purple and black, what color blinded genious came up with that combination? JMO
  17. This thread is not getting any replies. Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder why?
  18. I have'nt seen her, but I've been told that this Jamie Wamsley kid could be the best catcher to ever lace 'em up in this state. Someone told me she can hit a softball 300' and just about throw one that far too. Is all this true or just a bunch of hype? Who does she play travel ball with? [Edited by cornpup on 12-7-02 10:57P]

STD, I agree with you on some things but others I do not. It makes sense that if an athlete specializes in one particular sport she will be a much sounder player than the player who only spends 1/4 of her time to the sport. However, if you look at some of the web sites of the the best gold teams in the country you will find that many of their players are two and three sport athletes. But I do agree with you about the players around here (especially position players) that they put softball on the back burner. California has a bit of an advantage with population, but if you look at the number of quality gold teams that they put out compared to Tennessee I think it all averages out in terms of population. It has to, we didn't even send a quality gold team last year! What I mean by this is let's say for example (and these numbers aren't correct) that California has a population of 15 million people. Well they definitely send 15 quality gold teams to Nationals each year (not to mention all the teams that they send to 18A they could play gold). Now on the other hand let's say that Tennessee has a population of 5 million. We definitely don't send 5 quality gold teams. Like you said STD, we send one every ten years. The numbers average out, population is really not the problem at all. Why can't we at least send one quality gold team every year? I think the main problem is the lack of knowledgeable coaches. Let's not kid ourselves here, what else could it be? Finding a good fastpitch softball coach in Tennessee is like searching for strawberies in a pumpkin patch. No offense to the good ones out there because there are one or two. Way too many pitcher daddy's coaching. Too many drunk redneck fans that keep up with their own daughters batting averages. Too many parents that seem to have all the time in the world when it comes to telling you how good their daughter is. Too many people who think having a travel team means driving to Chattanooga every other weekend. Too many people that want to teach what they learned when they played slow pitch. I know, idiotic parents are every where, but we seem to be a bit more saturated with them than most places. Good fastpitch softball coaches are hard to come by, especially east of the Mississippi, if you have one hold on to him/her for dear life.

O.K. sftblcoach, you wrote that the Frost Falcons lost all four of their games just like the TN Outlaws did. So what? The Frost Falcons didn't have any more business there than the TN Outlaws. What's you point? Then you wrote that the Outlaws went without two of their best pitchers, third base, second base, and right fielder. It sounds like either the whole team quit or half the players were not very serious about playing ball which confirms my understanding that this was not a gold team. I mean isn't gold supposed to be for the most dedicated athletes. And as for the excuse that some of them were college players and they wanted their summer THEN WHY WERE THEY THEIR IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! It sonds like they left all the younger players out to dry by quiting on them at the last minute. I'm sorry but these are not the type of athletes that make up true gold teams. Wouldn't you agree that these teams would have got more exposure had they went to 18A Nationals. At least they could have stayed in the tournament long enough for the college coaches to get checked into their rooms. And last but not least you wrote "you don't see many willing to put gold in their name either! Could it be because winning is more important than competition?" No, I don't think that's it at all. I think the 18A teams are a little more realistic about what their teams capabilities are, unlike the Outlaws, Falcons, Lightning, etc. I have a 9 year old that plays on a 10u team. Their not going to go play 14u just because it's better competition. JMO

Strikethree, I agree with you on some points but others I do not. I agree with you on "putting gold in front of your teams name doesn't mean jack", your right. For example, and maybe I'm missinformed on this but I was told that the TN Outlaws only qualified for gold nationals because they went to a qualifier and no one else showed up so WHALA they get to go to gold nationals. I was also told that not only did they not win a single game (pool play or elimination) but they got spanked like a red headed step child. NOw don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to talk down on them, they probably could have done very well at ASA A Nationals but they obviously ahd no business at gold. I also agree with you on the Nighthawks, they seem to go to ASA Nationals year after year and have a strong showing even without a stacked team (although I hear that they stacked 'em up like pancakes for this up coming summer). However, when you say that the Firebirds play coast to coast you must be talking about east coast to east coast. If I'm not mistaken this last summer was there first ever trip to ASA Nationals. I'm not trying to knock them either because they do have a little talent. Another team who seems to make a valiant effort to play in ASA Nationals is TE Elite. I think they have had several top twenty finishes and have beat some of the top five California teams (they have a lot of talent). JMO
