coach gary, except for pisgah, you guys were still probably the best team at this tourney (next to coffee, wink, wink). by the way, y'all need to get control of some of those people over on al.com, they are really out of line as far as talking about your players, playing head games with kids, you know what I mean.

it's never too late to sign in the summer; last year I saw a lot of recruiting going on at these tournaments; several local girls signed in the summer. anyone not signed already, don't despair, there will be colleges looking for players throughout the summer due to many reasons such as kids that had been recruited earlier may not make it for whatever reason, also some coaching changes will develop, and even some kids may quit or get dropped from their scholarships; anything could happen, the best advice is to keep plugging away and keep in contact with as many colleges as possible so that they know who is available.

redbaron, good of you to be interested, but the florida games were just exhibitions, they don't count as far as stats and records. on the alabama tournament, you are correct about the record, but they lost in the second round to decatur who went on to win the tournament. hhs won shutouts over haleyville, gadsden, and ezell; decatur scored on unearned runs; so this was a very good weekend for hhs.

govolz, you mean that all these big tournaments that charge $150 to $250+ for team entry fees, and charge $5-15 and up for spectators to get in, do not generate revenue? also, softball teams don't generate revenue by all kinds of fundraisers? why, I know of one team that has generated about $24000 this year, others have more. I think that I would have to re-consider softball not being a revenue generating sport. True, a lot of teams don't bring in as much as others, but there are some that pay their own way, then give some back to the school. There are a lot of football and basketball teams that don't pay their own way, not to mention giving anything back to their schools.

coach, could you list the pool game schedules? that would help out tremendously.

awburn is supposed to be one of the top teams in alabama this year and austin is usually pretty good. hl might finish second or third in this pool. auburn should win the pool and challenge soddy for this side of the bracket. grissom should win the other side of the bracket by beating goodpasture or lipscomb, and then grissom should beat soddy for the championship. grissom is probably the best in alabama this year.

This is word for word from the Tennessean, so you know they had the Beech pitcher's name wrong in the last sentence, which means whomever faxed it in to the paper had it wrong.

I heard that Miss Hutchins has signed with Trevecca on a basketball scholarship, congrats Amy and DA. She is just as good in softball!

Certainly, there is no way that all the top programs can all be in the same tournament. Not only Maryville, but also Unicoi, Davidson Academy, Greenbrier, and a number of other teams that will go to State could not make it to this tournament for whatever reason, that does not matter anyway. Still, though this is as good a concentration of the top programs in the state that could possibly be assembled. Should be fun, no matter what the end results for the teams are, since there is not a bad team here, all good teams that could beat anybody on any given day. Just hope it does not get rained out! (you can see I've already ran thru the gamut of emotions!) Also, since many colleges will be playing, who are the ones that will be at the tournament (era, topgun, or anyone know?)

Last year I would have picked an Alabama team to win, since they won most of the inter-state tournaments including Brentwood, Bob Jones, and Border Battle. This year the Alabama teams appear to be down a little bit, though they could still win it. I would have to go with the teams with the most pitchers and all around defense and offense. That appears to be Soddy and Beech. Too bad Maryville is not in it to stake a claim. Anyway since Beech has tied for the championship of its last two tournaments, I'll pick a tie between them and Soddy. Goodpasture will hang in there as well as Coffee, but both will come up a little bit short to my predicted co-champions. There are a lot of other good teams in it, but overall they don't have as much in the pitching, hitting, or defensive departments to outlast my top two picks in seven games. If it rains, then all bets are off since a lot of teams in it could win 3 or 4 in a rain shortened tournament. I believe the long range forecast is calling for rain.

agreed coachb, the thing is that with the super strong, light bats these days, it does not matter much what style you use, what with the strenght and power of the girls now days. also, next year if they reduce the COR of the balls like they are talking, it might change a little bit, but now when the pitcher supplies the power, all the hitter has to do is throw the bat at the ball and it goes to the green!

Wayne Co. lost a tough game to Hendersonville at the Waverly tournament. It was 1-0 in a tiebreaker. The SS for Wayne was really impressive, making several great plays. Good luck this year.

this is another good question. the best instructors will tell you this working relationship is critical to success. I was told many years ago that the catchers job was to make the pitcher look good, the opposite holds true as well. this relationship should be one of mutual respect and openness. both should be able to communicate anything that needs to be said at anytime to get the batter out. both should be on the same wavelength, the same sheet of music, in sync with each other. actually, all this holds true for the whole team, but especially for the pitcher and catcher.

LC, don't worry about it. as you said, you also get all the credit for the loss as well as the win, that's just the way it is. take it all in fun, the people you are talking about are either teasing you just in fun, or they are suffer from "pitcher envy/ jealousy". either way don't worry about it, the main thing is that you know it takes the whole team, no matter who pitches, catches, hits, runs, scores, or errs.

it's a shame the spring fling is not held here, this is the best equipped park and facility in the state to hold it; it has everything you need, no where else is even close.

Greenbrier was very impressive, just ran out of gas against a strong Cumberland Co. team; look for both these teams to do very well this year in their districts.
