  1. Jeff County defensive front 7 in 87. Andre Batts - DE (All-state, All-ET, signed with Hawaii) Johnny Williams - DT (Honorable mention All-state, All East TN, signed w/ MTSU) Mike Smith - NG (Honorable mention All-state, All ET) Brian Spivey - DT (Honorable mention All-state, All ET, signed w/ Tennessee) Paul Helton - DE (All-District) David Satterfield - LB (All-state, All-ET, signed w/ App State) Todd Collins - LB (USA Today Defensive Player of the Year, AAA TN Mr. Football, great career after Jeff County)
  2. Todd Collins will be coaching linebackers at Maryville this fall. Actually, he starts on May 24th by assisting with summer workouts at Maryville. They are fortunate, especially with the workout assistance. Collins was a workout guru. He was Bigger, Stronger, Faster magazine's High School Athlete of the Year in 1987.
  3. Vandy is very fortunate in getting Cassen Jackson and Jeff Jennings. Both classy players and great students/citizens. Jackson is one of the classiest players I've seen. He is a great student-athlete and as good as running back I've seen in East Tennessee since James Stewart or Leroy Thompson. If he would have had some help in the passing game, he might have been a state champion in football. Jennings comes from a great football/athletic/academic family. His father Jeff (great receiver in 81), uncles Johnny (All-state in 84-85), Jarvis (All-state in 79), and Joey (All-conference in 85) as well as his grandfather, Sargent Jennings are all classy men. All were fine students as well. The Jennings' family has made a tremendous impact both academically and athletically on Jefferson County High School. When you talk about football/athletic/academic families in Jeff County, the Jennings' family has made arguably the biggest impact on Jeff County in the last 25 years.
  4. Talkin about pound for pound, what about #22 for Maryville in maybe 96-97. Tough as nails and a gamer. Played wideout. Made big catches for them in the Halls game and couldn't have been more than 5-6. Only Maryville game I saw in 97 was against Halls and I think he caught a fourth and about 20 in the 4th. Drug one foot to keep the drive alive, a great play on any level. He played DB too. Anyone know his name?
  5. David Satterfield was the linebacker alongside Todd Collins. David was a hardnose player with 5.0 speed but during the game he was 4.7, he was a gamer. He was crowd favorite at Jeff County and went on to play a couple years at App State.
  6. Ask people in the "know" and they'll say Sorrells was the first (school opened in 76 and Sorrells was QB there in 76-77) and the best QB Jeff ever had. Great career at Furman and still a staple there.
  7. Chuck King played at Jeff from 1977to 1979.
  8. Are you being serious, Meadows applied for the William Blount job?
  9. Don't call me bubba, please. Hillsboro got the win that they probably deserved last year if the game was 36 minutes. But I'm sure Adylotte is glad he didn't have to worry about "the MARYVILLE magic" this year. Congrats to Hillsboro. State Champs. Although I didn't see the game, I'm sure it was great. First Clinic Bowl, 1A-5A I haven't seen since 97. Congrats Hillsboro.
  10. Give West credit, they beat Maryville, but I would expect better effort out them. Maybe I'm underrating Hillsboro and they are that good; however, I would think that M'West would have done a better job of moving the ball. 21-0 is pretty darn sad. But maybe, Hillsboro is that good. They beat everyone that stood in front of them. Congrats. But for all the Maryville fans, be upset that your team didn't get it done against West. West beat you. I just hate to see lopsided games. I thought Maryville was going to get shut-out last week (14-0 at the start of the 4th) but the Maryville Offensive Coodinator drew up some plays in the mud and got them back in the game. Maybe since they play on turf it was better that M'ville didn't play. Althought I'm sure the coach at Hillsboro was glad he didn't have to worry about the trick plays. Congrats to Hillsboro. You were the better team last year and got out coached. I guess what goes around comes around.
  11. 21-0, I'm sorry I think a trick play or two would have made it 21-14. I take back my statement from earlier this week. Maryville would have given Hillsboro a better fight.
  12. My wife's cousin paid the tuition at Maryville for her kids to go to school there. Neither played football. My wife has another friend who paid tuition to Maryville......they were both girls and neither played football. Those are the only 4 students I remotely know who have gone to Maryville High. So from personal knowledge, the tuition thing at Maryville is for academics or maybe cheerleading. But keep the recruiting talk up, it keeps me coming back to this web page.
  13. I hope no one leaves. Watching M'ville is a clinic in coaching; however, that's just what I heard that the D'cord is leaving. I'm surprised more M'ville coaches don't leave after every season just because the assistants are that good.
  14. Maryville is still Maryville!!! That means about 14 or 15 wins next year. As long as they have that coaching staff, they will always make a run. I've heard that D'coordinator is leaving. I saw one Maryville game this year, the Alcoa game, and they are still very exciting. They fell one game and about 5 interceptions short of the state title game, but alot of that did with West taking away Maryville's underneath passing game. Great coaching by West. They were a hair, which I think just fell out of my head....., of being in the state title game. West was better on Saturday. I think that Maryville wins 9 out of 10 against West but West won when it mattered. Congrats to West. I'm pulling for you.
  15. From what I've heard, West has a better chance of beating Hillsboro than Maryville would have. It will be a fast game. I read in the Tennessean that the Hillsboro QB has only completed 13 passes this year; so couple that with West's running offense, you better not go to the Men's room or you may miss a quarter. From the stats of the running game, Hillsboro looks like they can certainly run the ball. Losing Bryant has to hurt but Tibbs was the star of the game last year against Maryville and has averaged 12 yds. per carry this year so they aren't hurting. Doss is every bit the threat Gray was in 01 running the ball and having Walter Fisher back on defense makes a difference. The thing that makes this game close is West's defensive front. I talked to a buddy who says that West has a front seven that is as good and fast as they've ever seen. This game will be won in the trenches. I think this is close game just because of West's front and the game will be short because of the two teams desire to run the ball. West will need to play field position and not put their offense in too many long fields. If West can force Hillsboro into a couple turnovers, I like their chances. If West lets Hillsboro get those athletes running, it might be a long day. Being originally from East Tennessee, I have to pull for West but Hillsboro is certainly due, especially after last year and Maryville beating them on big plays. Good luck to both teams.
  16. If anyone could provide me with the Oak Ridge and Maryville scores, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.
  17. Great offense Blue, I saw them in the 2000 title game. Good post.
  18. Lincoln County 82, Maryville 98.
  19. Blue Thanks for the post. I just talked to the drug store men. They were saying that they didn't think Jeff was as strong as people made them out to be. Don't get me wrong, I hope Jeff County is ready for a run. Maybe Meadows has them ready for a run at a title. I was just going on what I was told. I think it is long over due for Jeff to have that 2nd gold ball. I thought they would have 3 by now. Past history shows that Jeff has to have the far superior team as luck is not on their side. Good luck Pats. Get that 2nd gold ball.
  20. I forgot about Gibson. Great, great player. I'm sorry the principal passed away. As for Bubba Dunn, he was the best player on the field at the 87 championship, both offensively and defensively. Glad to hear the 87 players are doing well. Thank you for giving me the update.
  21. I hope Jpats is right. I would like nothing better than the Pats to make a run at a title. Better than 87........I'll wait and see. From Jpats post earlier, not as much team speed as in 87. Mattison, Cunningham, Ensley, Collins and Quarles were all sub 4.6. Mattison, Quarles sub 4.5 as evidenced by UT's senior camp in June of 87. I'm for anyone who pulls for the Pats. Keep on pulling for those Pats. I was there this past weekend and the natives are not as confident as JPats. I hope JPats proves them wrong.
  22. I find it hard to believe that this year's team will have better skilled players than 87. Unless you have a 6'3 230 tight end, a receiver, a QB, and backs that run 4.5 with tremendous toughness, I can't see Jeff being better than 87. I hope you prove me wrong. What about the D? Johnny Williams, Andre Batts, David Satterfield, Todd Collins, Brian Spivey, Mike Smith and Paul Helton are the best D I've ever seen. Forget the fair secondary. The QB would not have enough time to get the ball off consistently for 4 quarters. I talked to a MHS coach a couple weeks ago and he even said they would have had a hard time throwing down the field consistently or running the ball against that 87 team. I think that team, especially the D, is timeless.
