  1. Just a FYI for Johnson County fans coming down to Burke-Toney tomorrow. I happened to come into Morristown from 160 and Cumberland Street last night and measured the distance after exiting 160 onto Cumberland to the Morris Blvd. traffic light. It's just under 1.5 miles. Thought that might help getting to the stadium.
  2. I'm not sure that I would call last year's game a fluke. Before the playoffs started, East was averaging just below 30 ppg. The only other team that South faced last year with that king of firepower was D-B. Regardless, that was last year. After all of East's injuries this year, the 'Canes defense became their mainstay; unfortunately, the offense was not able to be as effective as it was needed to be. Ironically, it appears that the roles are reversed this year from the last. This time it is East rather than South who faces a very high-scoring offense similar to the one they faced earlier in the season (Fulton). And South's numbers are very similar to what East had last year. For East to win, the Canes must be able to play an almost perfect game and South will need to be very generous in their gift-giving to the Canes.
  3. It was 39-6 but it was expected to be a little closer. At season's end, Boone was averaging 23 ppg while giving up 17 and had a record of 7-3. South, on the other hand, was averaging 29 ppg while giving up 12 with a record of 9-1. Other than the shelling taken from D-B, the Rebel's closest game up to that point had been with Johnson County. Regardless, large scores are more common in the first round games than one may think.
  4. Right..I did not mention the game with the Trailblazers. That's the only game that prevented the Devils from claiming the championship outright. IMO, though, it was the KY game along with the South & West games where I think the Devils really made a statement this year about their team. BTW, thanks for the KY update...I stand corrected. Good luck this Friday night!
  5. Red Bank, Hillsboro, Henry County, and Melrose may argue with you on that!
  6. Actually, it is only one notch; from 1st to 2nd. Despite the 2nd seeding, however, West was successful in extending its current string of consecutive region/conference champiuonships (albeit a shared title this year) to three and its sixth out of the last seven. Back to this thread, if the Devils can remain focused for four quarters then I do not see them faltering against the Patriots. Greeneville had three huge tests against Bell Co Ky, Su. South, and West (four if you include the game with East) and faltered only one time against Bell Co (by 5 points) who is currently the top 4A team in the state. Not a bad year.
  7. After taking exit 12 on I-81, turn right off of the ramp onto TN. 160. Continue on 160. After passing underneath U.S. 25E, ramp off of 160 onto the Cumberland Street exit. Turn right from the ramp onto Cumberland Street. Continue on Cumberland Street. As you near the 4th (?) traffic light, you are able to see downtown Morristown. To verify your location and the correct traffic light, at the light, there will be a gas station at your immediate right and a Firestone tire store directly across from it also on the right. Turn right at this traffic light onto Morris Blvd. At the 1st traffic light on Morris, you will be at Morristown East High School. Turn right at this light onto the East campus...the stadium and parking will be directly ahead. Hope all Johnson Co. fans have safe trips this Friday night.
  8. I though there would have been a lot more posts on this thread considering the game tonight is not only for bragging rights for the next year but for the chance to also go on to the playoffs.
  9. All but guaranteed to go to the 3rd round? Gee, thanks for straightening me out. I didn't know the playoffs had become double-elimination! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  10. First, I don't have a dog in this hunt but, on East's behalf, remember that out of their 5 losses this year, the 'Canes have been in every game with the exception of their loss to Fulton (34-0). Aside from Fulton, the largest margin of victory by an opposing team against East is 13 points (20-7, Volunteer). The other margins in descending order are 12 (Jeff. Co. currently 6-3), 10 (West currently 5-4), and 7 (Greeneville curently 7-2). The point being that the East defense is very capable; even more so, considering that the defense has probably logged more time on the field than the offense (don't know that for a fact but just guessing). The problem really is offensive production. 6 times this year, East has scored 14 or fewer points; 7 or fewer points in 5 of those games. Boone, on the other hand, does not have that problem evidenced by their 17 ppg average. I think that for East to realistically have the chance to win this game, the offense must put up at least 18-21 points; otherwise, it may be the Trailblazers going to Kingsport or Bristol. But East's fans probably have better insight on that than I do. Regardless, this ought to be a very good game tomorrow night. So, here's to no injuries and, even though I'm a West fan, Go Canes!
  11. Let's see, North gets blanked by David Crockett (currently 2-7, 1-5 in the 5 Rivers Conf.) in the first game of the season then, 6 weeks later, loses to TN High by only 11. Go figure. Last game of the season and Senior Night for North so they will definitely be playing for pride. I think the Longhorns may be a more rounded team, though. I'll say Johnson Co. by 8.
  12. I thought I might as well get this thread going. Johnson Co. has the #3 spot wrapped up in the MLC and it's highly probable that West will be the #2 seed out of the 5 Rivers Conference. Trivia #1 - Johnson Co. could well lay claim to Burke-Toney as being their home-away-from-home since they have played here in their last 3 playoff games (2001, 2005, and 2006). Trivia #2 - Johnson County's last football playoff win came in 1988; a 21-17 victory over Knox Webb. Trivia #3 - Since 1999, the Longhorns have found 1st round games to be tough going being outscored 152-40. Back to the future ... Statistically speaking, this year, Johnson County and West are very similar. Both teams average 21-22 ppg offensively and are only allowing 17-19 ppg. The Longhorns have had the toughest schedule between the two, however, playing 3 undefeated teams (as of this writing) in Hampton, Su. South and Tennessee High. In fact, those 3 teams account for the only blemishes on Johnson County's record. They are also 5-0 at home. But, Burke-Toney ain't home. Since the mid-season break, the Trojans appear to be playing stronger and with more confidence than earlier in the year scoring, roughly, 2 points for every 1 allowed. West literally has Johnson County outmanned and I think that will prove to be one of the deciding factors in the 2nd half allowing West to pull away with fresher players. Opinions, though, are like elbows; most people have at least a couple. How about it Longhorns?
  13. Conventional wisdom says that whoever takes 3rd will probably go up to the Castle and take on the Vikings while the 4th seed will have to go face the Rebels in Colonial Heights. But, then, this hasn't exactly been a conventional year!
  14. Professor?? Then I wish you had paid better attention in class then, Buco! Based on 2 games remaining for each of the top six teams when the study was conducted those were the probabilities. It's easier to quote possibilities when there's just one game left ... isn't it? Seriously, I'm very glad to hear that the young man from Volunteer is OK. Good luck to the Falcons next week!
  15. The road to Murfreesboro definitely goes through Maryville. It's hard to believe that it's been four years since they last lost a game. Red Bank, though, looks to be the strongest from region 4 this year and should be Maryville's quarter-final opponent. Thank goodness the TSSAA finally got it right starting next year by allowing teams from region 2 and 4, for example, the opportunity to be home team through the semi-finals which regions 1 and 3, for example, enjoy now. BTW, THSVikings2004, good luck to the Vikings next week. That should be a great game.
  16. Congrats to the Devils as well as their coaching staff, parents, and fans on a great season. Greeneville will win-out over East and Crockett and lay claim to being region 2-4A champion; their first such title in several years. As for the playoffs, Greeneville definitely has the ability to get to the quarter-finals. The 2nd round match-up between Greeneville and TN. High (assuming the Vikings take 2nd spot from region 1) will be a great game and the fact that the game will be at Burley will help the Devils. Assuming, however, that Su. South does not stumble between now and then, I do not see Greeneville getting to the semi-finals especially since the game will be up in Death Valley. (BTW, if South does lose to TN. High next week, then you are probably looking at a rematch with South at Burley in the 2nd round.)
  17. Did a quick probability study on the top six teams in the 5 Rivers for the remainder of the season as to playoff positioning; TSSAA rules on tie-breakers were followed (percentages are rounded): Cherokee - no chance of getting a #1 seed; a 1% chance of getting the 2nd seed; a 25% chance of getting one of the bottom 2 seed; and almost a 74% chance of not making the playoffs Boone - no chance of getting the #1 seed; less than 1% chance of a #2 seed; a 29% chance of getting one of the bottom 2 seeds; and a 70% chance of not making the playoffs East - less than a 2% chance of getting the #1 seed; about a 16% chance of getting the #2 seed; a 51% chance of getting one of the bottom two seeds; and about a 32% chance of not making the playoffs Greeneville - a 64% chance of getting the #1 seed; a 19% chance of getting the #2 seed; a 17% chance of getting one of the bottom 2 seeds; and a less than 1% chance of not making the playoffs Volunteer - a 3% chance of getting the #1 seed; a 25% chance of getting the #2 seed; a 42 % chance of getting one of the bottom 2 seeds; and a 30% chance of not making the playoffs West - a 28% chance of getting the #1 seed; a 39% chance of getting the #2 seed; a 32% chance of getting one of the bottom 2 seeds; and less than 2% chance of not making the playoffs
  18. Definitely. A Falcon win tomorrow night will mean a 2nd seed position for the playoffs with one game to go at Cherokee. I'm not sure that would change even with a loss next week over in Rogersville. A Trojan win simply cements their grip on the 2nd spot with Cocke County remaining at Burke-Toney. Any doubt as to a packed house tomorrow night!? Roll, Trojans!
  19. Didn't mean to ruffle all of your feathers there, Tomahawk! I was simply wanting to know if Volunteer has ever beaten West. I do not have the series history from before Volunteer came down to region 2 and thought a Falcon fan may know. If not, I stated that they may have one of their best opportunities this year to do so.
  20. While the possibility of Volunteer at least sharing the conference crown is a mathmatical possibility, it's more of a fantasy; so, let's talk about the game with West. It's very likely that the winner this Friday will probably be 2nd seed going into the playoffs and a home game in the first round. These two teams are close statistically speaking and Volunteer has their best chance to beat a West team in quite a while. In fact, I'm am not sure if Volunteer has ever beaten West but I'll let one of the Falcon faithful comment on that. The Falcons have played very well at home amassing a 3-1 record (losing only to Su. East back in August); although, neither team as yet has yet beaten a team with a winning percentage over .500. West, on the other hand, brings a 2-2 road record into the contest. Senior night is special and I know that emotions will be high in Church Hill but if West can effectively balance their traditional ground game with their "newly found" passing attack, I do not see the Falcons winning this one. West by 13.
  21. Good luck, tonight, to the Hurricanes from a West fan. (or is that allowable?!)
  22. I'd really like to see West win this one and continue on their march toward their 5th region/conference crown in 6 years. My keys to the game tonight for West: 1.- the offense must be effective and consistent in moving the ball downfield; 2. - take control of the time of posession (i.e., a function of #1 and helps keep the Greene Devil offense off the field); 3. - take advantage when in the red zone; and 4. - the defense will need to create a number of take-aways (again, keeping the G-offense off the field). One thing that the Trojans cannot afford to do is to get into a scoring match with Greeneville like we did back in 2002; that plays directly into the Devils' strength. With all that said, I just have not seen a lot of consistency in this squad as in years past. I predict G'vegas 31 West 21. Prove me wrong, Trojans!
