Spencer was actually the defensive coordinator last season. Before Fulkerson arrived, Spencer was the offensive coordinator. He is currently the offensive line coach at West Georgia-rival playoff contender of Carson Newman.

the nsca website is a good resource to use. I've been certified(CSCS) for almost a year, and I agree with you on the fact that a workout might work for one school and not another. However, I believe in building a strength program around a few core lifts. Mine is bench, power clean, and squat. In addition to these emphasized lifts, I want my guys on their feet for their lifts such as snatches, push press, dead lift,etc. Like the old saying goes, there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.

you are exactly right. when an athlete gets tired, all of his technique goes out the window. that's why I'll never let my guys do over 5 reps at a time, and not over 80% of their projected max.

the power clean doesn't work any specific muscle group- it requires every inch of your body to successfully do it . If my head coach told me that we only had time for 1 lift per week it would be the power clean. proper technique is essential to prevent injury. most kids will try to reverse curl, but what they find out is when they get around 200 pounds, you have to have form. speed and explosion is where this lift translates to the field or court.

Although Smith, Bruhin, and Huber have conncections-those guys would have signed D1 anyway. The advantage for Smith and Bruhin is their actual bloodline which you cannot ignore. People said the same about James Bates (Florida) and Scott Galyon (UT/Giants,Dolphins). James' dad-longtime D-coordiantor in the NFL, and Scott's dad-state trooper who escorted Majors/Fulmer. Bottom line is that both of those guys started multiple years for their university. The name might get you noticed, but it's the ability that gets you on the scholarship list and field. If Bruhin is Marshall's worst lineman-then they have a heck of a line. If Huber is Bama's worst athlete-same there. Have you all ever seen the Reynold's kid? He is a freak of nature-tons of ability. As of late, East TN has distributed a nice amount of D1's, and it seems like more to come.

so, if a coach thinks that his athlete can compete regionally, then he can enter that athlete? Do some coaches enter athletes that have no business being there?

could someone please give me some info on qualifying times and distances for the region track meet. I didn't have much luck looking on tssaa website. Does it change year to year? I would appreciate any info from you guys.

oak ridge tradition+talent+pride+ a coach like Stanton Stevens. If not for courtesy sake, why even interview anyone else? If Oak Ridge has a chance to get this guy, they better take it. Hard to believe, but I hear that O.Ridge has several athletes roaming the halls that do not play football. A young, smart, energetic person like Stevens would have that long line of players coming off that hill during the opening kickoff. Did Lussier take any coaches with him? Will the new coach have the chance to bring some staff? Good luck in the search.

I recommend that the booster's program at each school pay for a coach on staff at the high school to take the NSCA "CSCS" exam. I firmly believe that the off-season is where you mold the mind-set of the team, and your coaching staff must be visible and knowledgeable. I would not pay x amount of dollars to turn my players over to an outside source. I know that they know what they are doing, but my point is that the players need to see the coach(s) taking the lead in this. After all, a head coach wouldn't hire a consultant to call plays on Friday night would he? As of last year, the 2 part test (CSCS)was between $200 and $250 dollars. Not that being certified is the most important aspect, but players might buy into it a bit more.

surely to goodness, you all have a certified coach who knows the updated speed and strength techniques. like strength training, it's a year around process with flexibility, speed, explosion,etc. 4 weeks that late in the off-season process is a waste of money. use that money for speed equipment (chutes, resistant cords,etc.) good luck.

I was impressed with SC's offense, especially the OL. Anybody that likes football would agree if they watched the game. The Moore kid is a tough player who is elusive and can throw the football. Serafine is one of the top receivers in East TN. Seymour always has nice skill position players. Everybody talks about SC's depth and size. I was at the game, and it looked like Seymour has some size as well. Depth? I don't know, I noticed both team's skill guys playing both ways-not sure about the lineman. Anytime these teams play-it's going to be fun, and the other night was no different. The only team left on Seymour's schd. that they will have any trouble with-will be Fulton. That's the biggest difference in 3A and 5A, in 5A there is no "gimmie" games. That's not taking anything away from Seymour-they can't help what region they land in.

Maryville always looks good. Sevier County and Maryville had starters in for the first couple of series. After that, the seconds played. It's hard to judge a 1 quarter jamboree, but SC settled down and did O.K. I always like the Knox-News Sentinel and the way they have their own version: "Maryville played a lot of their seconds to a tie with SC." Each team's starters played basically the same amount. Not that it really matters, but just announce the score and facts. I think Maryville is a class act- I even took notice during the competition-their players were shoulder to shoulder as a team watching-seems like a little thing, but things like that is what builds a team to their level. Also, I've never seen a kid of their's run the jaw. Good luck this year Rebs.

All I know is that Sevier County, Powell, Gallatin, and Mcallie self-reported the day they realized anything was done wrong. In the "rules", there is not a consequence listed for the infraction. So, Mr. Carter can be as harsh as he likes. I know of some other schools who had different punishments for the same infraction. Every profession in the free world has someone to answer to. I want to know who the head of TSSAA has to answer to? With the teams mentioned here, you have Coach Potter and Coach Brewer who I know personally, they aren't exactly known as rule breakers. With the amount of teams who are in violation, it is obvious that communication is terrible. Football is the only sport in which the AD's meeting begins after pre-season practice starts. Spring sports meet for their rules meeting in January. I would also say that there is more than 14 schools in violation. How hard would it be to send out a reminder list prior to the beginning of practice-just a thought.

How's the QB situation over there?

High School football fans: you must see Dorman High School in Spartenburg,SC. It's right on the interstate(26). If any of you guys are headed to any of the beaches in SC, plan some extra time to check it out. Football stadium holds 20,000. They play in the "Super 16" In SC. Top notch athletic facilities.

Besides the Carson kid, who is left on the Jefferson County squad that has scored a varsity touchdown? Losing Clement, Jennings, Houston, and Brown-I believe I would try to sneak up on people instead of sticking my chest out. Every game Jeff will play from now on will have targets on their heads with some of last year's routs. Looks like Meadows got out of town just in time. I wonder if you Karns guys remember Jeff kicking an onsides kick when they are up by 40. When I saw that, I knew Meadows had already made his mind up about leaving. Speaking of Sevier County, they will be much improved. Pigeon Forge High might have hurt for the past 3 years, but I believe with the growth of the county, they are starting to see another cycle of athletes come through. From looking at returning starters from each region team-it looks like 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place is up for grabs, and who knows, maybe 1st. DB is the only solid lock in the playoffs, in my opinion. They are the only team that hasn't had a let down year. SC has had them the last 3, Prior to the last 2 years, Jeff has had them. Science Hill, Bearden, South Doyle haven't put together any runs. And whoever SCBBall freak is, just stick with your glory days of elementary school, and quit trying to badmouth. Anyone that knows anything about SCHS, their players and staff preach on competing and being accountable, not about state championships. Regular season wins, playoffs, championships will take care of themselves if you take care of business. Good luck on your rebuilding-after next year, of course.

I hope this kid has a strong head on his shoulders because I have personally seen several dads ruin their child's athletic experience. I would bet the farm that Maryville didn't make any promises of being a starter. So if he is a backup on the freshman team-does his dad pull up and move to make it easier on his son? I wish him luck-just let him be a high school athlete-if he is good enough later on to go to college-they will find him whether you are QB at Halls or Maryville. With hard work-it works itself out. Coach Sheppard is one of the best coaches around and has forgotten more football than most of us know. It seems to me Knox Co. has a huge problem with recruiting. More specifically the Halls,Powell, and Central area. I don't believe the high school coaches do it, I think certain parents, and little league dads manipulate certain kids. High school athletics is about the kids, not their dads. I hope I'm wrong. Everyone is so jealous of Maryville because of their success. Those kids start being successful as middle schoolers in the classroom and the field. Their pride starts young, they don't just turn it on when they reach varsity. Their program recruits itself. A parent would be a fool not to send their kid to Maryville if they had the chance. I just wish that all kids could play with the same boys all the way through school-this would boom school pride and rivalries. Let's leave the free-agency and the recruiting to the "experts" and keep our game pure.

Your best chance to beat Sevier County was last year at your place when they started 6 sophmores and a freshman on defense. SC has been down by their standards the last 3 seasons-expect a big-time improvement in 04'. South Doyle has the athletes to beat any team. Swafford getting fired might have been the worst thing to happen for the rest of the region-he seemed to get the worse production of best talent. Huthchins will have that program on track. Bearden has a good QB coming back, and Maynard always has a solid defense. Be careful when you predict records-you need to play one game at a time. Karns got a lot of people's attention last season-it won't be as easy for them this year with not having other teams "overlooking" them. They beat DB and that completely turned their program around-it only takes beating 1 top team for your players to buy into it.

Eric Locke -hands down, best playmaker, period. Sevier Co. and Lincoln Co. seem to spit out some solid QB's. From what I saw last year, the Edminston kid from Lincoln, and I thought Parker Clement from Jeff Co. was very underrated. This guy is highly talented with the brain to boot-too bad he was on Wing-T team-although they made it lool like the Deleware boys. The jury is still out on the DB QB-I'm anxious to see how he handles not having his security blanket(Williams)-He definitely has the tools. Shane Kelly-99', in my opinion, is second to only Locke as far as carrying a team-you all need to check him out over at CN-the cat is smooth. Sparks will finally turn him loose with his arm this year.

Don't forget Jeremy Bates from Sevier County who also signed with UT in 95'. He is currently QB's coach for Gruden down in Tampa.
