East Section Small School Enrollment Cutoff Goofup
jhoop12 replied to area1guy's topic in Boys Basketball
actually Holston is the second largest not the largest, Bluff City is the largest and their boys and girls neither one made it to Sevierville, Mary Hughes is one of the smaller schools and they were the best team all year, they beat Holston 3 times this year, Holston was just fortunate to be the best in the 4th quarter of the last game, outscoring Mary Hughes 20-8 in the quarter, if it were all about numbers Holston or Bluff City would win it every year, so do not take away from what these six boys, who played the whole game, accomplished...it is true we need 3 divisions but these Holston kids are just playing by the rules that were set by people they do not even know -
East Section Small School Enrollment Cutoff Goofup
jhoop12 replied to area1guy's topic in Boys Basketball
I am from Holston and I am sorry you feel that way...our small and large cutoff in upper east tennessee was set by the large schools, we at Holston had no say in the number, we just go play where they tell us to play, the reason for the cutoff is we have so many large schools in the 250-550 range, the gap between a science hill with near 600 8th graders, plus schools like sevier and robinson from kingsport with 300 8th graders is a much bigger gap than our 140 to your 40-60 8th graders, our numbers vary with the year, our 6th grade class has about 115, i do agree with you that there should be 3 divisions, we at holston have been pushing for 3 divisions for years, we finally go 3 divisions passed in area 1 for football small 0-100, intermediate 100-175, large 175-up, we crown 3 area 1 champs in football, we were told we could not do that in basketball because of the sectional setup, we have talked to the TMSAA about doing it in basketball and the say Area 2,3, and 4 have to do the same thing to make it work, i urge you to get the ball rolling in those 3 areas and form 3 divisions as we have in area 1 -
Why is there not small middle and large divisions in basketball
jhoop12 replied to TimeLtell's topic in Boys Basketball
in area 1 we only have 2 divisions, small and large, in both football and basketball we have been pleading with the guys in charge in area 1 to make three divisions in both sports and especially in football...currently in area 1 we have schools such as holston, blountville, bluff city and happy valley who have around 140-150 eighth graders being lumped with science hill (555 8th graders), john sevier (300 8th graders), and not to mention vance, greeneville, colonial heights who all have 280-300 8th graders...it is hard to compete when there is that big of a discrepancy...if you are on the bottom end of the cutoff which is 1-125 small and 126 and up large then you may be able to compete once every 5 years if you are lucky...three divisions would be a very good solution -

Who won the TMSAA East Sectional (Girls)?
jhoop12 replied to BobbyBoucher's topic in Girls Basketball
in the small school division two area one teams played in the girls championship with newport beating blountville in the championship -
congratulations to mary hughes for keeping the boys title in sullivan county for the third straight year...it was an all sullivan county championship for the second straight year, last year holston beat mary hughes to win their second title in a row and this year mary hughes beats bluff city to win their first...area 1 has dominated this tournament for three years in a row

i was just reading through and saw your discussion and i agree that 3 divisions would be more fair to everyone...holston has 130 eighth graders which may look large to some but is very small in area 1...of the 18 participating schools in area 1 only six are considered small division...of the 12 large division schools, seven have an eighth grade population of over 250 and four of those are over 350 so you can see the large gap between the schools...just like some may say it is not fair for a school with 50 8th graders to have to play against holston, the same would hold true for holston playing in the large division against schools with 250-400 8th graders....the same argument holds true in high school sports, our three county schools in sullivan county are barely over the tssaa magic AAA number of 950 students, all three will be in the smallest 15 schools who have to compete in AAA next year, it is not fair for them to have to try and compete with schools in the state that are pushing 2000 students, no matter the level or the cutoff number, someone is at a disadvantage...i wish the state would add another division or two to high school sports other than football

thanks to all the holston eagle players, cheerleaders, and fans for two great years of basketball, back to back eastern state sectional champions....what an incredible journey for all involved
-
mary hughes and holston are located just outside of bristol...the holston in knoxville is confused with our holston quite often...holston and mary hughes are both in sullivan county only about 20 miles apart

small school tournament for east tn. is being played at holston middle

no matter where the cutoff is there are always going to be schools on the high end and schools on the low end, just like there are in high school...our holston kids compete all year against schools with 250-350 8th graders...we are in area one which has a lot of very large middle schools, the cutoff is 150 and holston had 140 and next year drop to 128, there is no way to please every school....like in high school Sullivan Central has 1000 students but is playing AA against schools who have 500, not fair?....when central moves to AAA the year after next and plays in a conference against dobyns- bennett and Science Hill with their 1800 students is that fair?
-
hey 76 state champ i don't know where you got your bad info...but at holston middle we have 140 8th graders, 128 7th graders, and 125 sixth graders for a total of 393 students...the cutoff for small school is 150 8th graders of which we are under the limit....our school is located at the tri-city airport near kingsport...you may be thinking of holston middle near knoxville which is much larger than us

rogersville city girls won the championship over Oliver Springs 35-32 and in boys action holston defeated catons chapel for the title 43-31
