  1. I can think of a half dozen men who applied for the job that should have been considered much higher than Johnson. Steve Britton would have done one heck of a job and for much less. Scott Smith could have made a good coach,
  2. sounds like a bad move to me. just because you can coach at the semi-pro level does not mean a darn thing except he knows football. motivating teenage boys and non-professional assistant and volunteer coaches is different from coaching pro athletes. chris madewell may have the last laugh when this guy fails to win 4 games.
  3. It looks like at least two experienced head coaches are in the running for Hillwood. Atkins and Smith plus a couple of metro assistants will be the leading candidates. Both are good offensive coaches and Hillwood needs someone with experience. My question is why would anyone want to go to Hillwood at this time? Most of their athletes will be bused back to the northside of the river. The top westside athletes end up at the ABC privates and there is little financial support.
  4. Moore County could do far worse than Atkins. He has won at every level and did a good job at FC but came up 9 points shy of winning 7 games. Germxx must be a coach looking for a job? I don't see Atkins taking the pay cut to go to a 1A school. He made over 60K at FC if WCDT's reporter got the facts right. He would also want to bring his son with him to coach. I spoke to one of his assistant coaches who said he has a job offer in NC. I wonder if the folks at the Jack Daniels would put up the money to bring back Mac? I kind of doubt it. I love the WING-T but it is no longer a top offense. The only reason Steve Matthews ran the Wing is because he was told he had to run it by the DOS. Very few top teams run the WING-T. I know Riverdale runs it but they also get into the I and the spread sets. It is just one of many looks they give you. I am going to throw out another name for you to consider. Kermit Reed in FC coached with Mac at Marshall County. I bet he puts his name in the hat. He is a WING-T guy and a protege of Mac. Also I have heard that the d-line coach at Tullahoma will get an interview. Britton got a bum deal in winchester and he is a real possibility.
  5. Rumor is he wants to go to Moore County. Steve is headed to coach in Rutherford Co. The question is will Mac take the pay cut and put up with no 4th block athletics? If Mac gets the job the coach at south middle will probably come and work for him at the high school and that means a PE position at the high school will have to be created.
  6. Congrats to Coach Smith. He reportedly has been offered the FC position.
  7. Greg Mantooth was the best head coach in school history. The team is 38-70 for the decade. Atkins was 7-15 with two playoff appearances. Britton was 5-15 with no post season play. Mantooth was 26-30 with 4 first round losses and 1 second round loss to Riverdale. Brown 0-10 The idiots on the radio and local politics drove Mantooth out. They took the passion of the game away from a local hometown hero who coached college ball for 16 years and played at Alabama. You can't say that Atkins, Britton, and Mantooth didn't work hard. All three men put in the hours IMO. Whoever accepts this position had better have thick skin and ignore the radio and local paper.
  8. Great coach, too bad for his family, he lost his grandson on Thanksgiving. I think he got fed up with some folks downtown. They cut his salary and he told his assistant coaches wants to coach with his son. The new DOS will not allow family members to work in the same school. He won 4 games this year but was less than 10 points from going 8-3. They gave Columbia a race in week ten and overall the team seemed much better than the previous 3 seasons. He will land somewhere this year and may already have something in the works. Jim Carr should be the next head coach.
  9. Coach Atkins at Franklin Co lost his grandson tonight. Please pray for his family.
  10. I hate it for Coach Madewell. He seemed to have things improving. I didn't see the Rhea Co game but I did see a couple of games. Good luck Pioneers.
  11. FC629fan if Martin wasn't getting the job done your coaches would yank him off the field in a heartbeat. Your coaching experience must have been in youth football? I coached for 28 years in three states before retiring to fish on the lake and you are the only idiot other than Pepsi5000 that I hear complaining about TM. Grow up yourself and get a life. I have seen the young man play four games and he is the best athlete on the team. Your other backs are average at best. I think the coach is doing what is BEST for THE TEAM by giving the ball to Martin. I can't believe you are not a parent of a player because you would not be making such stupid claims. I watched last year as the staff attempted to throw the ball all over the place with little success. I said then they should line up in the I and run behind that big FB and line. This year they have and it has paid off. At least someone on your coaching staff had the good sense to make the change from the spread to the I. If any of my former teams were producing 300 to 500 yards of offense each week I would not care who is running the ball. They could not do it if the other 10 were not blocking. Give these men some credit. The only problem I see is your stupid comments.
  12. I liked the old system better. Only the top two teams should go and these mixed districts are the real problem.
  13. It's not about the X's and O's its about the Jimmy's and Joe's. Coaches coach but its up to the players to play. FCHS has two of the best defensive minds in Middle TN but the two coach Gregs (Brewer and Mantooth) can't make the tackles for the team. It is up to the Jimmy's and Joe's.
  14. I have seen both teams play and I know Coach L. Thompson is a tough competitor. I think LC may have turned the corner. They have been developing a passing game for several weeks. If I didn't know better I would think these two coaches have switched places. Atkins is running the ball from the I with a TE and Thompson is passing with four wide. The world has turned upside down.
  15. FCFan629: I coached FB in FL, GA and TN. I do not disagree with your points about pass defense. But you failed to note that NW did not complete a pass and won big. If you look at your teams stats online you will see they are attempting 7-8 passes per game. The FB ran the ball well in all 4 games I saw. I know for a fact Coach has a reputation as a passing scheme coach but something happened this summer and he switched to the I-SCHEME. Maybe he didn't like something he saw in passing work this summer. The point is you and I don't know. We are not at practice and have no idea what is going on. Just because we have coached the game does not give us the right or experience to second guess 10-11 coaches on the FC staff. Brewer and Winston are former head coaches. These men know how to coach. I don't see a lot of talent except for Martin. Some younger players but not varsity. IMHO the QB is average at best. If I were coach I would put the ball in Martin's hands 75 % of the time. I think I read somewhere he has 1500 yards. How many teams have you coached that had a RB like Martin?
  16. If LC wins next week they could qualify for the playoffs.
  17. If FC was 6-1 handing the ball to Martin eight out of ten plays you would be saying just the opposite. Martin is not the problem. Heck, if I were the OC I would do the same thing. You must be the dad whose boy isn't getting to run the ball. The lack of defense is the problem. The offense has played well enough to win games but the defense is inconsistent. I have seen four games. The TB, FB, and QB has ran the ball in each . It is a normal I offensive scheme. The TB runs the ball 75% of the time in that scheme. That's normal. Last year Atkins ran 4 and 5 wide and this year he is in the I because of Martin. You will not find many opposing coaches agreeing with you. I think there are only 3 or 4 really talented players on your team and your staff is trying to work with what they have. Players play the game not parents and coaches. I have been retired for many years now but I know from experience that everyone one in the stands becomes an expert when you lose and a fan when you win. It seems the 'experts' are now running the message boards in Winchester. lol
  18. You need to go back to high school and learn how to spell. You can't be a FCHS graduate. You certainly did not go to college. I know several of the men who coach at FC and I fish with many good FC folks and Pepsi5000 they are all smarter than you! You are new to CoachT so I can cut you some slack but this is not a message board for trash talking coaches or players.
  19. Binns you saw what I saw. Solid offensive performance but problems on defense. I also agree Tullahoma did a heck of a job throwing the ball in the 4th Quarter. Folks around the lake where I fish have more of a wait and see attitude. I can see lots of progress. Last year Tullahoma routed FC. This year it was a good football game.
  20. My friend, I'm an old timer who loves the way the game used to be played. I love the wishbone and wingT and hate the spread. Last year the coaching staff spread the players out all over the place and could not find the endzone. This year those men wised up and put in the I formation which is designed to run the ball with the FB blocking. Just looking at the stats I would say offense isn't the darn problem and if they are putting 300 to 500 yards of offense a game whatever the heck they are doing is working. I bet those men do work special teams every Thursday just like every darn coaching staff in TN but in the end it ain't the X's and O's that win ball games it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's. I've seen them play 3 games this year and I can't fault Atkins with his offense or Brewer with his defense but the punting team needs work. The only boneheaded call I saw was the kneel down at Shelbyville. If Martin is getting the job done let him run. Heck we had a big FB one year in FL and I bet we ran FB Trap 15 times a game. You use the talent you have on the field and if one play works 5 times in a row you keep running it until they stop it.
  21. Boys, I have seen three FC games this year and I saw nothing wrong with coaching issues in any game except Shelbyville. The FC secondary is weak in spots but that is a talent issue and not a coaching matter. Coach Brewer is a good defensive coach and I knew him when he was the head coach at Monterey. He put his defense in a position to stop the pass but give Tullahoma some credit they are well coached and they did a good job putting together a come back. I coached ball for many years and I don't have a problem with running the ball every down if the opposing defense can't stop it and Two things were obvious Friday night: FC could not stop the pass and THS could not stop the run. Two old rivals playing in a good ballgame.
