  1. You can also get statewide stats at murphyfair.com You have to be a member, and I think it is $12 or something like that to join. It will list the top 20 or 25 around the state in rushing, passing and receiving. It looked like the only papers that have sent stuff in are Chattanooga and Knoxville. So it is only East Tennessee at the moment. That will probably change as the season goes on
  2. West Memphis was one of the seven teams that won a state championship that played in the 8-team Rumble on the Ridge last year in Forrest City, Arkansas. As the host, Forrest City was the one team that did not win and I think they lose to West Memphis in the semis of 5A. Bolivar also played in the tournament and lost in the finals to Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Rumor was that Mitchell or Ridgeway or both were going to play in Forrest City this year. Bolivar is not going back, but will play in the Arby's instead.
  3. I'm a little biased, because I have seen Chism play more, but I would take Chism ahead of Niles. Chism is taller, smoother in the post and his jumper is good from about 17 feet. He'll occasionally jack up a three and they'll even go in, some of the time. I like Chism's game very much. It was Chism that got South Side to the state finals as a sophomore and was a huge part of Bolivar repeating. I think Chism's upside is greater than Niles as well. Niles plays meaner and is more agressive, but Chism has big-time skills. He got frustrated playing against Poplar Bluff in the Rumble, he certainly wasn't getting the calls, but he showed what he could do, when he wasn't in foul trouble. Him and Kemp will make a great package for any college. I got a solid dollar, a real GDub that that both end up playing together, assuming that they are both eligible. Another dollar says it is Arkansas, assuming they don't fire Heath after next season.
  4. You are just so nice. I knew about Andrew and Will. Has Lil' Neill decided on a school yet and what about Hunter? I figure Ryan would rather play football and it sounded like Hunter got banged up and wasn't able to play much, but both are really good baseball players. You can e-mail the pic to jeremypeppas@yahoo.com. The paper in Arkansas is the Arkansas Times. I'm out of the sports biz. I'm a boss man with some fancy, schmancy title. One other thing, you need to have a baseball scrapbook done like the basketball team. You may have seen it already, one of the parents did it for the girls. I saw a coaches copy and I was impressed. I can't remember the momma's name. Ask the boy, he can find out.
  5. Nice work young'uns. I was able to keep track of the tournament, despite my perch in downtown Little Rock. Much thanks to coacht. Dyer isn't arrogant, the quote just sounds bad because it is out of context. But I'm mad at him anyway because I was promised a hat, that I never got. Rebs sounds like the boy played well. He would be very embarassed if he knew that you were posting. Mark did a good job with the pics. I took a look at them as well. You know Greg Liles predicted a baseball title during football season. Turns out he was right. Might ask him for stock tips or the lotto number next time you see him.
  6. I'm not telling you to sneak out of the MTC or anything, and I wouldn't. Because thats bad. But, hey, you got p-days and you're bound to find a member who will let use their internet. And someone can always send you clippings.
  7. She has signed with Union. She was also a Ms. Basketball finalist as a sophomore and junior.
  8. I'm a person that has voted in the Mr. and Miss Basketball awards for the last two years and will be voting again at the end of the month. And I had no idea that I was a member of a secret panel. Who knew? Not me. The amount of misinformation that circulates around the state is — at times — hard to believe. It really isn't that complicated, newspapers that have regional coverage areas are in the mix. You have to be present to vote so the number of papers varies from meeting to meeting. Every region of the state has at least two papers on hand, usually more. We submit nomination forms beforehand and usually the top five or six vote-getters are discussed. Personal observations from having watched those players along with input we have received from coaches is part of the discussion. It seems that players that had good state tournaments the previous season helps — remember when Trey Pearson had 50 in a state tournament game as a junior? It also helps to be on a good team and having signed or being recruited heavily by colleges. It seems to that the finalists are usually a pretty good mix of players from around the state. But in a state as big as Tennessee you will always have someone get left out of the mix. Rebecca Rowsey leaps to mind from last year. If I have any bias, it is that I prefer a senior to get the big award. A good junior will have their chance that next season.

  10. I voted in the AP poll as well and I'm not secretive at all. All you have to do is ask. I think how some of the voting went ... well how can you leave out a Jackson North Side girls team that is 13-1? Or Peabody? Or ... well those are just the schools in my area. Tennessee is a big state and some schools get left out. Plus, as already stated, the new system this year had some bugs in it and — hopefully — the poll will be better next time around. jp
  11. I have the rim on my desk and some of the glass in my pocket. Going to Humboldt in the morning to have Shivers and the rest of the team have pictures made with them for a story for Thursday's paper. It is actually the rim from the practice backboard that they replaced the shattered backboard with. And the actual rim is up on the old backboard. The rim I have isn't breakaway and they decided that they needed the breakaway rim for the game. *shrug* It is still cool and should make for some good pictures. Shivers is way shorter then me, but on the other hand I'm like 6-2, 6-3. If I was guessing, right at 6-foot. jp
  12. He dunked with two hands and the rim came down. He didn't hold on to it. The game was delayed for about an hour. A story in my paper and I'm off to Humboldt in the morning to do some more. jp
  13. Hey all you coacht knuckleheads, I'm giving you guys, gals and others a rare and unique opportunity. As you know the paper puts out an All-West Tennessee football team at Christmas. The team covers all the teams west of the Tennessee River, but does not include Shelby County. All the coaches were sent nominations forms for All-West Tennessee and I have them back. But I'd like to know what you think. So, pick a Player of the Year and the All-West Tennessee team. Combine all the classifications and try to keep the team as honest as possible. So don't just say all the players from your school and make it an actual team. So have five offensive linemen, a couple of receivers and so forth. Of course, your vote won't actually count. I'm doing this because I've discovered coacht has some knowledgeable football fans and also not every coach sends in their information. I also hope that some of you will realize this job doesn't mean just showing up for games and isn't always very easy. It is, at least some of the time, hard. For the very serious send your best guesses to jpeppas@jacksonsun.com. Thanks jp
  14. Do I like Huntingdon or am I jealous? You guys need to gather up at the Hardee's and decide what you are going to say about me. Good grief. Back to the bashing. jp

Take the Parkers crossroads exit. Head north. You'll hit Huntingdon in about 20-25 minutes. Then follow the traffic. If you get there early enough, follow the signs to Bruceton and then hang a right at the Civic Center sign. Park there and walk in
