  1. PHargis, I know your intentions are well but I do think that you are asking for something that is very hard to find an answer for. Every athlete's specific situation will be different. What will also be different will be the response from most sports medicine orthopaedics, PT's, and athletic trainers as well. Athletic injuries, methods of surgery, and forms of treatment are unfortunately not cut and dry situations. And I think that you unfortunately think they are. Thank you for your comments, as I do appreciate them. I just think its not possible to get a same straight line response from all medical professionals as all their opinions will differ. I also think that sofine will agree with my response. But the articles will help lead parents and athletes in the right direction and provide a great deal of information. Thanks.....
  2. www.physsportsmed.com/journal.htm Enter (ACL injuries and females) in search box. There are tons of these sights out there, just got to look. Enter ACL injuries among females, Google search. You'll be reading for days. also; American Journal of Sports Med. Journal of Athletic Training American College of Sports Med.(ACSM)
  3. www.orthoinfo.aaos.org/ click on the knee, click women and ACL injuries, also Prevention of ACL injuries.
  4. PHargis, many dr.s, athletic trainers, PTs, and exercise physiologists are being very active in this area. They are not sitting on their thumbs and taking this issue for granted. This is not new ground we are treading on, these questions have been at the forefront of sportsmedicine for some time. Just because there isn't an athletic trainer or sports medicine physician actively pursuing these issues at your respected hs does not mean they are being ignored. And there has been publised articles on most if not ALL issues mentioned in these threads in either The Journal of Athletic Training or The Journal of Sports Medicine....
  5. PHargis, you have misinterpreted my post/s.... I am NOT saying there isn't something that could be done at all levels. Just trying to get through to you that after tons of debate and differences among professional opinions, a single preventable strategy has not be agreed upon... All these(women's cycle, quad strength, hamstring strength, flat feet, narrow ACL tunnel, Q-angle, questionable strenghtening and conditioning program, inadequate stretching, competing year round, inadequate rest) can and may be factors that combine to cause knee/ankle injuries. Yes, there are a couple of these that lead the pack, but ask one professional their opinion and it will be different from the next. But I do believe that DRs, PT, and Athletic Trainers are beginning to come to more of an agreement as to what may be the causes. But you have made it sound as if I'm saying "dont worry about it cause if its going to happen it will happen", thats definitly not the case...
  6. I think a forum pertaining to athletic injuries "could" be a good idea PHargis... As long as it was for parents and athletes to discuss injuries and hopefully professional opionions on the matter. But I don't think it would be productive to address individual players by name and what injury s/he may have sustained. That information is considered confidential and may be against the athletes wishes to be made public. Also, teams can use that info as modivation if that team happens to be an upcoming apponent.
  7. Sofine, I second your post. I myself have gotten that response before.... And PHargis, you don't have to get defensive. Sofine has given many key possibilities that have increased the amount of injuries in mainly female sports.. But that is just it, experts such as sports med. orthopaedic doctors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers have debated these issues for a number of years and there is still not a definite answer or single causing factor to the increased number of female injuries(most commonly the knee) in hs or college athletics... What I'm simply trying to say is that IMO there is not just one thing that female athletes can do to dramatically reduce injuries. It simply has to be a trial and error program designed for a specific group of athletes for a specific time. You will never know if what your doing is causing an injury or if what you didn't do could have prevented the injury. It just seems that PHargis wants to know what to do to drastically reduce injuries and she/he wants to know NOW!!! PHargis, its simply not that easy and if it was then the so-called experts would have definitely found the answer by now. Not trying to hurt your feelings or anyone else's but take it from me, sofine, rebel, cbomb8. Sometimes injuries happen, its just a part of the game. We all do what we have been taught and what we think will help but sometimes it just doesn't work.. I know of teams that had 3 ACL injuries in one season(4yrs ago), haven't changed a thing to their workout or conditioning programs and haven't had one since(knock on wood ). PHargis, you can ask from now until the end of the season, but I do believe that almost every factor that I have ever heard to be a possible cause to increased injury rate in female athletes has been mentioned on this thread or the others. I do believe that most factor mentioned in these posts combine to play huge roles in causing these injuries... But if one definite cause floats to the top of my lucky charms in the morning, I will let you know..... I leave with this story from an orthopaedic dr's office in Chattanooga. An athlete, years ago, who tore her ACL during a hs bask game was being examined in the dr's office. After thorough exam, he broke the news that her acl was tore and that she would have to under go surgery before returning for her senior yr. Denial had suddenly set in with her and her parents and just could not begin to understand why she would need surgery... So the dr.(not saying a word)began frantically looking in every drawer of the exam room. After a couple remarks from the Dr.- "where did I put that", the parents had to ask what it was that he couldn't find. So being quick on his toes as usual, the dr replied "my majic wond so your daughter doesn't have to undergo surgery"!!!!!! Probably not funny at the time, but oh well.......
  8. Good point rebel... Ultra Ankle does seem to be better. I think one main reason the ASO is very popular other than the effectiveness is its low cost-23-26bucks... Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Ultras are about 45? a piece. Preventing an injury is worth every penny but not always easy for parents to understand the difference. They usually don't understand that the typical lace-up from Hibbetts doesn't compare.....
  9. Sameday, your crazy if you think HS will finish 2nd or 3rd. Better get all your posting in, come tourny time you may have to leave CoachT forever!!!! Must be a power outage in HS!!!!
  10. I think that in asking ATC's(Certified Athletic Trainers) of their opinions you will find that most will respond with very similar beliefs and teachings.. As we have seen with posts from sofine and cbomb8 who I do know are ATCs. Ooldrebel has also responded with what I believe is reliable info and would think that sofine and cbomb8 would agree. I don't think that parents and MOST COACHES realize how much ATCs could benefit their program other than just evaluating an injury or covering up a cut! They don't realize that ATCs spend approx. 4 yrs studying human anatomy and physiology, eval. of orthopaedic injuries, emergency first aid and cpr, exercise physiology, nutrition, rehab techniques, therapuetic modalities and countless others. ATCs are state licensed health care providers who have passed an extensive national board of certification exam. Also, over 800hrs are spent being supervised by Cert. Athl. Trainers performing first aid, injury evaluation and injury rehab(just to name a few) before being accepted to sit for the national exam. This is not something that anyone can study at home for 6wks and take an online exam. This is not something that could just be taught to teachers thru a 3day course. As for all concerns that Phargis previously posted such a conditioning programs, injury prevention, injury evaluation, dr referral, etc. can all be performed by athletic trainers and are currently being done so at many high schools. I undoubtedly believe that the success of Jackson Co. girls bask would not be possible without the supervised strength and conditioning program designed by their ATC. I personally know of one hospital that spends over $400,000 annually(salary, benefits, school health supplies) to provide ATCs for four area high schools at absolutely no cost to the schools. And the sad thing is that most parents have no idea that this service is being provided. In most cases the parent or coach does not respect the ATC's decision simply because they are unaware of the extensive training that Cert. Athletic Trainers go thru... I have seen lots of cases where general practice physicians have missed injuries that ATCs have evaluated and found. Ask 10 orthopeadic surgeons specializing in sports med.(and yes there is a difference in some orthos and sports med. orthos.) if they had rather trust an injury evaluation from a general md or athletic trainer and 8 out of 10 will choose the athletic trainer. You know that typical ankle sprain?, go to the ER and they say stay off of it for a couple weeks then ease back in to activity, when you could see the ATC(ruling out fx of course) could start rehab, maintain conditioning, prevent the injury from happening again, and begin sport specific activity in probably half the time. But as usual we don't have MD after our names. And what really gets me is when people value the opinion of a nurse practioner over that of ATCs. Not putting them down by any means but ATCs are the more qualified healthcare provider for othopaedic needs.... Sorry for such a long post, I could go on and on but I will stop...... PHargis(or anyone), If you would like more info about Cert. Athl. Trainers, visit NATA.org. Hope this helps.....
  11. Hey Antwan, I think I'll get the biggest cow bell I can find and sit right in the middle of the DL fans and chant "Go Hog-eye!!" They(being DL fans) would probably hold their noses thinking that since I had a cow bell I should presumably stink. Even though neither of us have a dog in the race, it is fun reading all of this....You gonna make it to the boro? Man, how can anyone(except for DL fans) not root for the cats as well as they're playing. Good luck Cats!
  12. highschoolfan, I know you must vent your frustration in some form or manner.... My guess is: 1. Your either a father of a son who ovulates more than your daughter and can't stand the fact that he wears white leather belts, hip-hugger jeans, and a flipped-up-collar pink polo to work at abercrombie and fitch!!! OR 2. You are that white leather belt, hip-hugger jean, and flipped-up-collar wearin abercrombie and fitch employee that did make the team a couple years ago and played slap hands on the sideline while holdin up four fingers during the 4th quarter(just to fit in). Same goes for you bombsquad!! Which one do you fall under?
  13. You need to EDIT that Swanson and erase the whole sentence!!! And kaexo, we heard you the first time you said they won........
  14. Bombsquad, you sound like a certain person that posts on Softballwire!!!!!
  15. How much are tickets for the boro? Is it for all games that day or do you pay again before each game? Thanks in advance....
  16. Anyone other than Wilson Cates in 3A is a shame!!!!!!
  17. This game is homecoming? Do schools usually have homecoming this early?
  18. Nativefluff, I wished you would pick another school to be a so-called fan of, maybe you need to go to York. If you know so much about coaching and can pick out the exact problem with Clarkrange then please SHUT UP about the COACHING and do something about it!!!!!! I'm sure your the typical fan thats sits across from the bench with your eyes on the head coach for the entire game nudging your buddy sitting next to you and blasting the coach for every decision he makes... By all means stop stuffing your face with popcorn and walk your happy across the court and take over and lead them to a District CHAMPIONSHIP... I'm sure all you know about bask. is what you've watched played in that gym and others in the district or on the Buff's schedule. You've never sit in that hot seat at the head of the bench, dealt with 14-18yr old kids, making sure they keep their head on straight at school, listening to constant excuses why they are late or can't be at practice, or put up with parents who think their kid is the next Michael Jordan....
  19. WoW!!! Bet that was a fun game to watch.... Congrats on the win, especially away...
  20. Anyone got a score on this one? Thanks in advance....
  21. What players in the last two years has he had that are above or equal to talent at Clay and Pickett?
  22. Easier said than done Dawg. If he had kicked the ones off that he wanted he probably wouldn't have a job.....
