Those were 4 great games with the Jackets. Would love to see SP and TC play again sometime.
  2. Besides, they have a rope around the field to control the crowd. All I can say is show up early and don't worry about WHERE the game is being played. Just worry about HOW the game is being played.
  3. Frankly I don't give a crap who goes where and who plays for who. But there are a lot of people that do. If a kid from South Pittsburg, Whitwell, Jasper, Pikeville, Powells Crossroads or anywhere else on God's green earth goes to Boyd or any other school, private or not, then that is his business. If he is recruited, if his parents fork over the dough or if he goes willingly by his own accord it doesn't do anything for me. More than likely the TSSAA is going to split it in 2005 anyway and none of the talk will matter. But until then fans need to worry about winning with what they have and not worry about what another team has.
  4. The game between SP and Marion was moved from Finley because it lost money. It was moved back to the valley where it belongs and where everyone (at least everyone I talked to) wanted it to stay. Of course when you take a game and move it 30 miles from each of the teams home town and you do it on a year that both teams are not near what they have been in the past then it's obvious that you're not going to lose money. But you are right, I don't see that game being moved to Finley due to the money aspect. The T$$AA takes too big of a cut for the game to be profitable anywhere but at the home team's stadium.
  5. Vic Grider is the coach at SP and yes, he's pretty good. He has good assistants and good players but he is the one that has to keep them together and make the big decisions. He and Akins at Boyd are two of the best in single A in the Chattanooga area and 2 of the best in the east
  6. Any thoughts or predictions? If you look at the scores Gordonsville beat Watertown by 7 and SP beat them by 61 but that doesn't play the game. SP has to go to the jungle where it is always tough and loud. G'ville put the Pirates out last year in the second round in a very wet game. G'ville did lose a lot from that team though and SP returns nearly everyone. It should be a good one. What do you think?
  7. I hate to say this being a fan of South Pittsburg (I also think our coach Vic Grider should get some mention) but Robert Akins of Boyd Buchanan's name has to be mentioned somewhere here. His overall win/loss totals aren't the best but ever since he has taken over at Boyd he has been one of the best coaches in the state. And it's not like he took over a power house. Boyd was the doormat (well, if not for Lookout Valley) of the region in football and he turned this program around into state contenders in no time. And he did it with what was at first no talent and he has not just played patsies, he has had some tough competition when he steps outside of region play. Along with him, Satterfield of Trousdale County if you are counting them in east TN. His record there speaks for itself.
  8. 7:00 local times I do believe
  9. The way it looks, it is a 3 team race in the east. It all will go through Cloudland where it is tough to win. Boyd vs. South Pitt in the 3rd round to set up the semifinal match on Roan Mtn will be a good one. Boyd won in a very evenly matched game earlier in the year. SP made the mistakes in the kicking game and they made mental mistakes all night taking themselves out of it. Boyd on the other hand had a game plan and stuck to it and when they saw the breaks in their favor they hit the throttle and put the game away. If SP can keep thier heads in it it will be a great game to watch. The winner will get Cloudland in an all out, no holds barred battle. I can't wait for the 3rd and 4th rounds to see this all play out. I have no idea who from the west will be there and I'm not going to try to predict it
  10. Cody Walker of South Pittsburg will be returning next year ... and the next and the next. He is a freshman 1000 yard rusher and to be honest, one of the best running backs I have seen in a few years. Not the best but one of them. But by the time he is a senior he could very well be the best football player to come from this valley in a long time. And that is including players like Eric Westmoreland and Eddie Moore.
  11. Uhh, yeah. I'm not going to say that Marion has NO talent, there are some players out there with some skills but it is nothing like it was in the 90's. There is not enough talent to produce a huge number of quality wins no matter who the coach is. From what I hear about Tim is that there is no one that loves the program more than he and no one works as hard as he does. I don't know coach Taylor personally, that is just hearsay. But the talent level has dropped. There will be a resurgence in a fw years, there always is. But saying that it is all due to bad coaching is completely off the mark. I am not saying he is the best coach in the world but I think he is far from being as bad as he is made out to be. But it doesn't matter because he will never get the full support of everyone in Jasper. He hasn't had it since he has been there. As for your assesment of spiking the ball on 4th down, Ken Stabler did the same thing when he was QB at Alabama. On 4th down on the possible game winning drive they spiked the ball to stop the clock. The coach at the time? Bear Bryant? Are you saying that because they spiked the ball on 4th down that Bear Bryant was the worst coach ever too?
  12. Whenever you have a Johnny Beene (or Bean or however he spells it) crew there are going to be plenty of flags. I am surprised that most of them went on Grundy's side, it killed a bunch of their drives. What was the total? 12-15 flags on Grundy at least I am guessing. Grundy had 12 when the game was over. They could have had at least 4 more that were declined. As for Mr. Beene and his crew....they vacuum. I saw several blocking below the waist and holding calls that could have been called against the Pirates that weren't called. And in the second half when it looked like South Pittsburg intercepted another pass on our sideline....they did but it was called incomplete. That crew was terrible. And how does a guy from South Pittsburg get to ref that game? Especially when his name matches the stadium????? Del (who will still take nothing from the Pirates. They're awesome.) I thought Beene was from Jasper. I may be wrong but I thought that he was. Either way there are usually some phantom flags ... or at least it seems. Usually that crews calls seem to go against us but on this night more went on the GC side. I can't remember the exact scoring order. I think it was Cook, Cook, Walker, Cook, and Cook but I am not sure about that. I think Ron scored 4 times.
  13. Yeah, I wasn't on the goal line but did hear from some people that Ron crossed the line before the ball came out. I am not sure, I wasn't right there myself, just what I heard.
  14. Whenever you have a Johnny Beene (or Bean or however he spells it) crew there are going to be plenty of flags. I am surprised that most of them went on Grundy's side, it killed a bunch of their drives. What was the total? 12-15 flags on Grundy at least I am guessing.
  15. South Pittsburg had a student pray over the PA tonight. He led into it pretty well. He said that it wasn't to force religion or anything like that but only to give prayer for a safe game and then he went on to pray.
  16. Great game for the Pirates. Defense pretty much shut down the Grundy O and Ron Cook and Freshman Cody Walker each run over 100 yards.
  17. I don't know how old you are I graduated in 99 but I have been going to HS games since I was in the 4th or 5th grade and to me every week after I got home I could see the highlights on TV especially Channel #3. but now it seems they don't have the same coverage they used to I can remember seeing a camera on the sideline almost every Friday night regardles of who was playing! I am just a few years older (about 7 or 8) and have been going to the games just a few years longer but you are correct. You used to be able to see that. Every Friday nearly every team in the valley had highlights on Friday night news. But now they are just sending one camera down it seems. Every now and then you will see more if there are some big games but it seems as a rule they are sending one. And if there are a few big games then they may send one for the lower end and one for the upper end. I don't know if this is how it is working or not but that is how it seems and it does seem that a camera man a couple of years ago said that it was working like that on that night in particular. But I wish that it would get back to the way that it was just a couple of years ago. It seems like it was last year, maybe the year before that the coverage started slipping. But you are correct, at one time not long ago there was a camera at almost every game every week.
  18. None of the teams in the Sequatchie Valley get the coverage they deserve. Surely this game will draw some coverage though. I don't know why I think that though, the SP-Sweetwater game didn't draw a Chattanooga reporter. It's no shock though, ever since the Times and Free press were bought out and merged together the coverage has really gone down hill. It is to the point now that it is not even worth looking at. Used to it was 4 pages at least of material and there were always a couple of big games on the fromt of the sports page. Last weekend there were 2 weak pages of coverage and nothing on the front. Of course that has nothing to do with this game, just needed to vent a little. The Chattanooga Times-Free Press is terrible they they really don't put anything about HS in there Sunday paper anymore making you have to by Saturdays if you only subscribe to there Sunday paper and there Friday paper good do better! The TV stations hardly cover any game in the Sequatchie Valley. There was a camera I don't remember which station at the SP/Sweetwater game becasue I remember seeing coverage that night. My question is why would TV stations send cameras to the SP/Lookout Valley game and not the Grundy/Sequoyah game or even a rival for many years the Sequatchie/Bledsoe game thats the first time that I can remember that a TV camera wasn't at a Bledsoe/Sequatchie game! I would bet that another great rivalry this week Sequatchie/Marino want have a camera either you would think they could cover 1 half in Jasper and 1 half in South Pittsburg to give all schools fair coverage. What is this weeks "Game of the Week"??? Well, from what I understand the station(s) will send one camera down here and they will hit each school that they can for a few minutes until they get some footage and tear back to Chattanooga to get it on the air. It is a little more understandable than not having ANY coverage in the paper these days but it's still not too appreciated. Big games or at least like you said, serious rivalries should have at least SOME coverage. I would guess that the "game of the week" for the valley will be the Grundy/SP game but don't count on much coverage. I'd say it will be as you said, a camera to hit both Grundy/SP and Sequatchie/Marion and then if they have time and if North Jackson is home they MAY get some footage down there.

  20. This is also the rule in college.
  21. I'm going with SP but it should be a close one. SP won it last year in 3 or 4 overtimes even though Grundy had a couple of opportunities to win it. And even though that was last year neither team lost too much that couldn't be replaced. It's going to be a battle Friday night. I'll be there early for sure.
  22. Here are a list of some of the schools looking at him. Stanford, Virginia, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Louisville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt. Stanford and Virginia lead at this point though I do believe. This is per Unapproved Website
  23. The Yellow Jackets came into South Pittsburg tonight and were heavily outmatched as everyone knew but even with their small numbers they kept fighting and scraping. They didn't give up and that is something that they can be proud of. Good luck LV during the rest of the season.
  24. I remember that game. I thought that Coach Baxter was going to tackle the band director. He gave him some "not so nice" words about how he felt.
  25. What? That is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Telling fans not to yell at a game is like being told not to eat at a buffet. Now if there is anything obscene, vulgar or violent then that is one thing. But if they are just being loud then I don't see a problem. As for the players not being able to concentrate, most of the time while on the field you don't hear or pay attention to the crowd anyway. And if you are letting the crowd get to you then you need to step back and focus on the task at hand. The crowd yelling is part of it and they want to get in your head. You don't see them telling the crowd at Neyland to be quiet when something big is going on. You don't see the crowd in Gainsville shutting up.
