  1. Congrats to Greeneville. They are state champions. Without "taking away" any team's victory I would agree that we would do fine with four classifications, maybe even three. But keep in mind that it works both ways: Maryville would have had to "go through" Greeneville, who had a fantastic team this year.
  2. Is the game going to be streamed on the internet? Anyone know?
  3. What a bunch of Garbage . . . As someone who (was) a longtime poster and as someone who is a longtime lurker, I have to say this isn't the typical view of the Maryville fan. What I saw (online feed) on saturday was a heck of a game. Both teams deserved to be there, and Hillsboro came out on top, well deserved. I also think that it's good to put a positive spin on the game. Hillsboro got redemption after losing multiple championship games to Maryville, and Maryville got a kick in the rear for next year. Too much success leads to complacence. Not that i think the team was sitting back, but a loss can provide some extra drive for next year. Congrats Burros!
  4. Congrats to Hillsboro It was a great game. The internet feed was pretty disappointing, but good enough to get the gist of the game. Hillsboro had great speed, and Maryville never found a true answer imo, which was a first in recent history. On the other hand, looking back 20/20 it seems that both team exceeded expectations. Maryville was supposed to be in a down year, and the news from the west side of the bracket was Henry Co. all season long. I really think that if these two teams played 10 times, it would be a 5-5 split. I think that Maryville had a bad game w/ the turnovers, but I was really impressed how Hillsboro maintained great field position all game long. Had the rebs not fumbled on that first drive, I think it would have been a different outcome, and had a few plays materialized better, Hillsboro wouldn't have had such great field position. So I think this game was a tossup, and Hillsboro was simply the better team when it counted. Looking back, I can't hardly believe the run the rebels had. I remember being a junior and leaving the Halls game early when Maryville was about to go 0-4 to start the season in 2000, and thinking "we're terrible" - since that game the run has been amazing. GQ is a great coach. Seniors have nothing to be ashamed of, and Hillsboro has everything to be proud of. Redemption is a great feeling, and you should enjoy it for all its worth. One thing kinda peeved me though. One of the announcers on the internet feed called the outcome "the end of an era" - in a way it is, in terms of the win streak, but I have to believe that with GQ and the great program in place, Maryville will always find success at the next level. This might be a "bookend" on an era, but I don't think it's the end of good things to come. And by the way Hillsboro looked tonight, it seems like they might have a streak of their own beginning. I don't think things should be judged purely on streaks or consecutive games, but by the level that a team plays consistently. Both Hillsboro and Maryville have been consistently good (scratch that and make it great) this decade, and I dont see that ending any time soon. "End of an era?" Not hardly. once again, congrats to both teams, and next year will be very exciting with the realignments. Go Maryville!
  5. I'm outside of D.C. for grad school, but I try and listen to/watch the games when I can. Made it up to Greeneville during Thanksgiving when I was back home. /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" /> I was able to see a couple of games this year on Wazoo Sports and listened to several others online h/t WBCR.
  6. Thanks, sounds like it will work out fine on my connection.
  7. Pepvol, How did the internet feed work out for you? I think I'm gonna try and watch the maryville game online tomorrow.
  8. Congrats to HC, sounds like you all have a great team this year. I was listening on the radio to the last few minutes, it was a great game. It's always hard to win on the road in the playoffs. best of luck to the pats -TRP
  9. I thought there shoulda been a running clock by now? Whats up?
  10. Cool. I would love to see it happen too. I would drive 8 hours back to TN to see a BA-Maryville matchup. I think we both agree that one's definition of a weak schedule depends entirely on what other team or standard we are using as a baseline. By DII standards, our schedule is not anything to brag about. By DI standards, above average, while certainly not great. In honor of Govman . . . /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />
  11. Alright, as Brandon says, back to the topic. Is Maryville's schedule WEAK? (with emphasis!). Compared to what? That's really what it comes down to. Compared to BA's schedule? Yes, definitely weaker. Compared to other public schools in any given region? No, not really. Of course in scheduling you'll have some up years and down years in terms of competition. While WB has not been a 5A powerhouse, they are way up this year from some past years. Alcoa is reliably good, while Heritage is reliably bad. But compared to other public schools, Maryville has a better than average schedule, and usually do. So I really don't understand what the point of this thread is. Are you suggesting, Brandon, that a public school attempt as vaunted a schedule as BA? (and the reason BA's schedule is tough gets into the whole public/private scholarship split, which is a whole different debate) If that's what you are comparing our schedule to, then yes it is weak, but your implication is absurd (that a public school should forego local opportunities, both sentimental and economic, in favor of uncertainties simply for the sake of looking better on paper). On the other hand, compared to other public schools we play a better than average schedule, still win state titles, but that would invalidate your assertion. Either way, this thread is lacking depth. Just because some Maryville fans and alums say they would like to see some tougher scheduling does not mean we are conceding weakness. I for one would love to see some marquee matchups, but that does not mean we have a weak schedule as it stands now. All boiled down, I've read this thread, and you keep saying "back to topic." So I'm challenging you to show how Maryville's schedule is WEAK. Is it the toughest? of course not. Is it better than average for a public school? Absolutely. You are trying to compare apples and oranges, with the overall goal of minimizing Maryville's recent success compared to BA's historical success. In my opinion, Maryville is a classic case of "res ipsa loquitur", while your assertions are intellectual "negligence per se." Maryville might have a weak schedule by your standards, but by objective standards, they have an above average schedule difficulty, yet still win games. Back to topic. . .
  12. Just because Maryville could do better in scheduling competition, does not mean they should. As already stated by others, there are reasons not to change anything (economics, tradition, etc). Further, those reasons don't have anything to do with being scared of getting exposed etc. Finally, you imply that Maryville is a lesser team because of decisions made by the AD. That's just ridiculous.
  13. First, I am not the one calling Maryville a Dynasty. That is a website that follows Cal. and National Prep Football. Second, It is obvious that your definition of dynasty differs from theirs. Third, let's concede for a moment that you are right and Maryville's schedule is weak. Statistically, after controlling for the weakness (note that Maryville has played much lower competition than some other top 25 teams) Maryville still ranks. The reason is obvious: a win is a win, even if it's the Colts beating a pee wee team. You are suggesting that a team's competition defines their ability. That is a logical fallacy. Fourth, why do you care who Maryville plays?
  14. Go to unapproved website.com and click on the "dynasty rankings." It has a lot of stats comparing the best teams in the country in terms of opponents w-l percentage, records against the top 1000 and top 7000 teams etc. Also, if you doubt CalPrep's national rankings (top 1000 and top 7000) they have a nice little explanation on their methodology. Maryville is statistically right up there with other national top 25 teams, even after those stats have been controlled for differences in schedules. Bottom line - the number one goal is winning state. Number two is winning region. Number three is winning the mythical Blount Co. championship. Number 4 is impressing national polls and "experts." Maybe YOU think Maryville needs to go out and play some "real" teams, but apparently most others don't think that. Maryville is achieving number 4 by taking care of 1-3 year after year.
  15. I was looking at unapproved website and found some interesting stuff. They have Maryville #5 nationally, and WB #72 nationally in their top 1000 power ratings. In the projected match-up, they have the following: Their projected match-ups have been pretty accurate for Maryville so far this season. If anything, Maryville is often a few points short of "covering" the projected spread, so if the trend continued, this game could go either way. Of course, I also remember the four horsemen and all that hype a while back, but I think it would be great for this series to be more competitive than in the past, so long as Maryville still wins.
  16. End of the first quarter: Maryville 17 Clarksville 5
  17. 1. Not everyone who wants to get in does. There is a waiting list for tution students, and no, athletes don't skip to the front. 2. You make it sound like Maryville is in the same company as BA or McCallie in terms of cost. The "fee" is a couple thousand a year, and makes up the difference in city taxes that a tuition student doesn't pay. Most people don't understand that if you live in the city, you pay city taxes and county taxes. If you live in the county, you do not pay city taxes. What Maryville does is great. It allows people to go to a good school and pay what they would have paid extra if they live in the city. I think it fits the very definition of "fair." If anyone complains that they can't afford Maryville, they are really saying the same thing as they can't afford to live in the city limits. 3. I wasn't aware that the TSSAA was an all-powerful organization that dictated the policies of local school districts in the name of fairness. I think what you were suggesting was that the TSSAA change Maryville's classification, not that they prevent Maryville from charging tuition for non-city residents. The key to Maryville's success as a school system has been the ample funding from city taxes and tuition, accountability with it's teachers, and lots of community involvement. I was in the Maryville system K-12 and I think it served me well. The emphasis was always academics first. I think alot of people tend to forget that not only does maryville play football, but they are one of the best school systems in the state, and an academic "feeder" school that sends kids to outstanding colleges every year. Something like 75 percent of my class went on to a four year University, and another 10 percent went on to a junior college or community college. More on top of that went to a trade school. Just about every student at Maryville continues their education. The TSSAA does not have the authority to stop tuition students from attending. 4. Maryville cannot be considered a Private school because they are not private. ANY student who lives in the city limits has a right to attend. Just because some people pay "tuition" to make up what they don't pay in taxes does not classify Maryville as a private school.
  18. I agree that just because a great team wins doesn't necessarily reflect upon the level of competition in East, Middle, West. However, something that a lot of people don't realize is that championships are always skewed by the way regions are set up within a classification. In 4A, half the regions are in East TN, From Bristol to Chattanooga. That means that every single year there will be a team from East TN playing. Middle and West are split. In 5A, its also split, except the bulk is in the middle. There are only 2 regions from East Tn. Granted, there is no guarantee that a 5A team from Middle will make it, but at the same time, there's an opportunity to have an all Middle TN 5A championship (not possible for the East in 4A). So you really have to put the distribution of schools and regions across the state. Not really sure about 1A, 2A or 3A.
  19. Sorry I can't tell you that. The WB has picked up state games for the last few years. Here in Chattanooga there is no more "WB" It was replaced by "CW" ( I never watch it, but that's what the game is on) If you have a WB affiliate, or a CW in your area that's probably what its on.
  20. 14- 3 Maryville with 6:00 left in the 2nd It's on channel 2 in Chattanooga, thats all I know.
  21. I think Maryville wins by 14+ points. This is not disrespect for Hillsboro. conventional wisdom says this one is going to be close, and I think conventional wisdom is wrong more often than not. Also, the way Maryville systematically dismantled two undefeated teams earlier (teams with similar game scores as Hillsboro) I just think they have more this year.
  22. I think it shows intensity. . . not arrogance. I think its funny that now people on this board have accused both Alcoa and Maryville of recruiting in various topics. Even if it were true (which its not) wouldn't you think it would be a wash with two schools in the same county recruiting against each other? It's also kind of ironic how you whine in a post about Alcoa whining. I'm not really sure if you are a Maryville fan. Congrats Alcoa, Three in a Row is a great accomplishment. Few teams in TSSAA history pull that off.
  23. First, I think we are on the map nationally. It's moving up that won't happen unless we played out of state powerhouses. Cal Preps compilation poll has Maryville at 21 or 22. Tony poll has Maryville at 12. SI has us at 16 or something like that. Maryville has gotten some national attention from the polls. Secondly, the goal of a program should not be to get people from out of state. The goal should be to win every game that is on the schedule. What does being a top ten national power really get you? Maryville already gets attention from D-1 schools. Guys have gone on to South Carolina, Auburn, and two players on the team are UT commits, which brings up a third point. The vols do what every other program does. If you look at Ohio State, USC, ND, etc, you see a lot of kids from different states. Those kids also are usually key players on the team. Tennessee recruits the best in the state, and then goes after the best in the country to fill in the gaps. All big time programs do the same thing. Pete Carrol has said something to the effect of "i don't care where their from, USC recruits the best" Of course there is more depth of talent in other states, but think about it. There are only 3 bigtime programs in CA if you count UCLA. There's a lot more D-I talent that goes somewhere else than a California school. Same for TX. I think it's great the TN has the type of program that can attract kids from CA, TX, OK, etc. Not really arguing with you on this, but I think I have a bit of a different perspective. Like I said, I think it would be great to see them play some out of state teams. But I don't think that the Admin sees anything to really gain. Remember, Maryville has good academics too.
