  1. Gerry .... I don't know who you are, and this has nothing to do with the thread (sorry, coachT, won't happen again), but I love how you type in T$$AA. Perfect illustration of what they're all about: Money, not kids. ... I hope you don't have the patent or copyright, b/c I plan on using that style, too, from now on.
  2. Hey, I'll just keep on posting. ..... I think the key here will be which team can beat its own mistakes -- UC with its many missed tackles and OC with its penchant for laying the ball on the ground. ... OC's defense has been, how to put this, ah, not good, all season, but they kinda clamped down on Covington in the second half last week. Turning point? Perhaps. ..... And, hey UC, better wrap up on OC's big ol' No. 44. That's one tough young'un right there. Oh, the Rebs have a little bit of speed, too, b/c they had a runner or two find the corner on occasion vs. a very speedy Covington team. Tornado defense better focus on assignment football this week, after all those option pitches and keepers I saw from Rebel Country last week. ..... UC, meanwhile, has to be brimming with confidence right now. Three good weeks in a row with two wins and a "moral victory" (oooh, coaches hate that term) vs. the Bulldoggies on Friday. There's speed on the UC side of the ball, too, and a young team getting better each week. I know this is 2-3 vs. 0-4 and nothing other than county "bragging rights" on the line, but I really think this season's game could be the one that makes this a heated and hotly-contested, highly-anticipated series in the vein of OC-UC basketball in the 1980s (before it was halted for four years when OC went up to Class AAA). Get there by car, bus, bike, foot or on your neighbor's back, but JUST GET THERE!!! And, get there early. thumb
  3. Oh, and just to stir up this little controversy on yet another thread ...... You can hear ALL THE PLAY-BY-PLAY ACTION LIVE on WENK-AM 1240. .... You know, they've been covering the Golden Tornadoes for about half a century. Go figure. .... and, they said that new-fangled play-by-play thing was just a flash in the pan.
  4. Well, first of all, I didn't think it was a weatherman's responsiblity to make out high school football schedules. .... Let the weather play out and then make any necessary decisions on game day, not a week before. No one knew what that 'cane was gonna do a week before it got here. Case in point: what about that huge rainstorm at Neyland on Sat. night, hmmm??? You wanna solve some re-scheduling problems? Get rid of Week 0 and in-season open dates and schedule a Week 11 for make-ups only. About 99.9 percent of the teams would get an extra week to heal up before the playoffs began. I'll tell you how idiotic it is to let a weather forecast dictate scheduling. A few years ago, a school system in my area canceled school for the following day b/c the forecast called for snow. School was canceled on account of snow, it was canceled on the threat of snow. The next day? You guessed it: Light flurries early and sunshine by late morning. Besides, football is supposed to be played in all kinds of weather. It's not baseball, after all. And, before you start mouthing off, I'm not downplaying the devastation of this hurricane and its aftermath in our fine state or any other that was in its path. Considering the destruction left in its path, high school football is not very high on the priority list. Pray for all the victims, and do what you can to help them make a quick recovery.
  5. Congrats to a coach of an SEC team that got beat by Maine?!?!? .... Oh, you said "Broome" not "Crume" Sorry about that .... and, congrats coach.
  6. Jeez, you two, quit you're trashing and tell me something about this dang game!!!!
  7. Keep this thread on Page 1, people. I know you're out there, and I KNOW you have something to say about this one.
  8. Yeah, baby! Now, its GO TIME with this rivalry. The events of Friday night -- OC hanging tough with a talented Covington team and UC putting a scare into perennial state title contender Milan -- make me think this year's installment of the rivalry will be one of the best in series history. .... Man oh Man, tough week for me. Got relatives on one side, alma mater loyalties on the other. Where to sit, where to sit ..... hmmmm. ...... BTW, occhsfanviachatt, gonna sit with your reunion class or wave to them from the other side?!?!?
  9. I saw it, and the coach in question was Coach Kendall. He didn't deserve to be treated that way. I was ashamed to be a football fan and an Obion Countian after witnessing that pitiful, classless and gutless display. The "fan" -- and those who saw it know who he was -- needs to spend some time in church. His display was disgusting. Staying "on thread" ... I listened to someone else anyway.
  10. Ok, I'll get serious ..... I think some things that would really help would be to eliminate topics when they become outdated or stale and to combine similar topics into one thread. ..... All those "So and So vs. So and So. Your Predictions." threads should be trashed by no later than the following Monday. Do you know there are still threads about preseason jamborees on the boards?? Also, how many "Your Thoughts on the new 1A" threads are there? Things like that should be combined into just one thread. ..... I don't think you have to fully separate by classifications, but you can do that when the topic is specifically about one class or another, as in the example I just listed about 1A. ..... I'll bet just doing those things would knock about 50 threads off the board. .... Just my thoughts.
  11. I would suggest all of you to take a quick drive through Obion County to see three top-notch facilities all within 30 miles of each other. Start on Highway 51 in South Fulton, where a new football field and fieldhouse (with indoor workout area) are currently under construction. Stay on that road into Union City and go to where High School Drive hits Miles Ave. and you'll see a stadium, indoor practice facility and fieldhouse, all glowing in school colors, with two outdoor practice fields also. Then, when Miles hits Reelfoot Ave, take a right and drive on down to Troy, where you will see another big stadium and indoor practice/all-purpose building for Obion Central. .... Say what you want about all of your places, but for a rural county with barely 20,000 citizens to have those kinds of facilities for its three high schools is pretty darned impressive. Based on its youth athletic facilities alone, Obion County should be a booming community. Makes one wonder why it's not.
  12. Since you brought up "fabled" UTM's stadium .... We were both there on that cold night back in 1976 when UC played Mitchell in the playoffs. Tell me, does that still rank as the largest crowd on record there???
  13. This is perhaps the best piece of sarcasm I have read on coachT. ... Bravo!
  14. Are you related to Ronnie C., b/c that sounds like Ronnie C. logic to me.
  15. 20% isn't rare?? What kind of math is that??? If I bat 10 times and reach base only twice, then reaching base is a rare feat for me.
  16. Well, J.Tow's old school vs. his current school. At least the hafltime show will be lively. Don't be shocked if the ol' Purple and Gold pulls off the stunner vs. the ol' Purple and White. .... But, I'm about 214 in The Big Ones, so what do I know?!?
  17. I think we should post based on height. I'm 6-4.
  18. Do not -- I repeat, do not -- be surprised if Westview pulls off the upset. .... But, then again, I'm ranked at about 214 in The Big Ones, so what do I know?!??!?
  19. Ok, I just read more of the posts. If Joe Willie can apologize for bringing up "W" (which must have taken a lot for him to do), then I can be big enough to apologize to him. ..... Let's keep Washington D.C. out of this. In fact, things would be better off if Washington D.C. got its nose out of a lot of things .... ah, but I digress. Let's just hope a solution is found so the coaches can coach and the kids can participate in their sports. Oh, and guess what?? It's sports today. It's band tomorrow.
  20. Well, I was wondering when the Cheatham County debacle would be blamed on George W. Boy, what depths you "HATERS" won't go to in order to bash the current occupant of the White House. Maybe we could go back to the previous administration and define what "is" is, or maybe the last president with (D) beside his name and return to the stag-flation and malaise days? ... Ok, fine. You wanna blame "W" and NCLB, then I can blame Title IX (which, I believe, was actually passed during a ® administration, but then again, look at what that administration was and did). Go back to my earlier posts about what is being taught in schools today. Maybe free condom distributuon or "alternative lifestyles" are not being taught in Cheatham County schools, but they are being taught, at taxpayers' expense -- and at the expense of the essentials needed by young men and women to be competitive in a global economy. And, to the person who asked if we should cut school meal plans instead, I didn't know it was the responsibility of the school system to feed my children??? Oh, but I guess that's just heartless, because as I'm sure ol' Joe Willie would agree, there are two Americas, after all. Maybe you guys could get George Soros to stop spending his money on 527s ($15 million and counting, so far) and donate just a little bit to the Cheatham County School System, hmmmm? Then again, none of this would be happening if Enron hadn't imploded or if Halliburton didn't own the White House, right??? Jeez, give me a break and get back to the real issues here.
  21. Oh, now come on! You don't think King Ronnie I has just a little say in who goes where??
  22. I agree with the early posts about Covington and Westview. Both are good teams playing tough schedules early. Don't be surprised if both play awhile past Week 10.
  23. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Now we're quoting Bon Jovi on this post! .... By the way, good job to you two guys on the UTM-TSU game. .... Should we sing "The Boys Are Back In Town" or quote that line from Smokey And The Bandit: "The Bandit and the Snowman. Together again. Like Fred and Ginger. And Lester and Earl." ?!?!? .... Also, just kidding about the late-night stuff earlier. I hate working late, too. But, admit it, "WQAK-QAK" is just a little kinda sorta funny, huh????
  24. I don't think going down from 5 classes would be going backward. What we have right now is a joke. Let's face it: Most of the first- and second-round games of the playoffs are pointless (although you do sometimes get a good 2-vs.-3 matchup and the rare 4-over-1 upset). In this state, the playoffs don't really begin until the quarterfinals. ..... I advocate a four-class system for football, basketball, baseball, and softball. ..... Some have said that its not fair that a team with just a 100 fewer students than a nearby school is playing in a lower class when the other school is playing in the upper class, but you'll get that in any classification breakdown. ..... My reasoning for a four-class split is to bring back some competitiveness to earning a playoff spot. I have seen several 2-8 teams make the playoffs. Union City, just as one recent example, won a region game in Week 10 last year to "up" its record to 2-8. Though UC did not make the playoffs, it went into that last week with a chance. Playoff berths are supposed to be rewards for good seasons, not one more week of punishment for bad ones. On that note, for all of you ready to use the "second chance" argument, how many 2-8 or 3-7 or even 4-6 teams under the current format have made a run in the postseason and won five straight to take a state title. I don't see any 7-8 or 8-7 or 9-6 records listed beside any state champions in the TSSAA record books. Yes, there are some 11-4 teams, but those records are 99% of the time a result of good teams playing tough schedules. ..... Listen, it's just my opinion. I just happen to think we have one too many classifications in football and one too few in basketball. .... Also, I agree with those who want to put the privates back in and use a multiplier. Coaches need to quit taking a negative approach to playing the privates and use those games as opportunities to get better and make a statement. ...... Finally, I think there is a chance that a four-class system could possibly hurt the really small football-playing schools in Tennessee. We already have many small schools (locally, Bradford comes to mind) that don't play football. Maybe a compromise would be to develop an 8-man league open to all schools with less than 150 enrollment and giving those schools the option of playing 11-man or 8-man. There are several states with very competitive 7- and 8-man leagues. ..... Just my thoughts. Not intended to hurt anyone's feelings. The views and expressions of this post do not necessarily reflect the views of anyone else on this board, or anyone else living in my house.
  25. Well, all those things you mentioned are certainly on my favorite list. .... I guess one of the big reason is how things come full circle in a small community. .... I remember going to games with my dad to watch my brother play, and now we all go to watch my brother's oldest son play. .... I see people at games now that I saw when I was a kid. ..... And, let's face it: What's better than a Hot Dog and Coke on a Friday night??
