  1. I think the 20% has been in place for sometime. It doesn't happen often but there are times that districts merge or schools close and this has to happen.
  2. It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
  3. Who has more access to kids? Charters? Privates?
  4. So you want a have and have not split? Sound like the perfect ramp to elitism. Tell those rural kids that they'll never be able to compete with those urban kids. They're not good enough right? Or we could just do what travel baseball does and have tournaments every weekend and give kids big fake rings for winning a few games. The suburban public schools are typically the ones with more funds. Urban and rural schools have more in common in finances than they do with rural schools. I've taught and coached in all of it. The difference is attitude. But if you're jsut going to say you can't compete because you don't have the money then that's an excuse. Especially in basketball. The balls are the same size, the rims are the same height and size. The ball dribbles the same in some rural gym in mountains as it does in the FedEx forum. Charters come and go like a fart in the wind. They are no real threat to anyone. Magnets could be but rarely do they win either. It just hasn't been seen in Tennessee.
  5. MASE is a charter. They can accept kids from any where.
  6. Why would the tax payers be responsible for paying for only a coach? In recent years with all the theft from various programs in schools from different programs with booster clubs (not just sports) the State of TN has made alot of rules surrounding booster clubs and how they handle money. I have two documents to review, 1 is 40 pages from the state comptroller and the other is 37 pages from my district, so I can consider starting a booster club for my middle school program. It has been too much trouble in the past for the other coaches. There is no way there needs to be an adult in the school building for 7 hours a day with no responsibilities except coaching.
  7. Who's going to pay them? In my opinion coaches need to be in the school to interact with the kids/players. They need to be there to help encourage and intervene when it is necessary. Coaches need to have access to players attendance, grades, and discipline records. Coaches are a huge influence on players.
  8. Tax payer dollars are paid for certified teachers to "teach" and then coach. The primary job is to teach. There are some district that ay awesome supplements and others that don't. Dyersburg and Dyer County are pretty close if I remember correctly. I would imagine that Football and basketball are above $10,000 now. I've heard that Milan is $20,000 for boys basketball. I would imagine that football is more than that in Milan. Collierville has camps that coaches get paid extra for. 3 camps a year, 100 kids a camp, $30,000 right there. There are places like Memphis-Shelby County schools where the supplements are garbage even for the head coaches. I made less than $3,000 as the head assistant at Germantown in 2015 when we were 26-4 and one of the best teams in the Southeast. As a head middle school coach next year I will make between $4-5,000 at a municipal in Shelby County. Coaches should be compensated for the jobs that are required but lets keep in mind that they are educators first. It's pretty frustrating to other teachers that work their tale off teaching 6-7 classes a day to watch someone roam campus, not teach (or have very minimal responsibilities), and get paid the same (more with supplements) as a person who has the some years of experience or sometimes less.
  9. Plenty of head high school coaches, especially at larger programs with pedigree, get small class schedules and time to get things done. I've seen head football and basketball coaches get 2 P.E classes, 2 weightlifting, cafeteria duty, and planning. They might be the study hall teacher, alternative school, or something that doesn't require alot of planning and actual teaching. I think at Dyer County the coach gets 2 basketball periods, 1 P.E class, and a planning. You can't get much easier than that. The supplements used to be $10,000 for boys and girls each. It's not like this everywhere. I know that.
  10. I've lived in Memphis since 2015 and I've never had an issue. I coach and run a side business and I've been to just about every neighborhood in Memphis, the suburbs, and North Mississippi. Living and working here 365 puts me at much higher risk than visiting for 3 days. I've never had an issue or been put in danger. Don't let your fear, stupidity, and ego get the best of you. It would be fine to have it here every 3 years. People will make excuses for everything. MTSU's gym is terrible. East TN is too far from West TN. Memphis is too dangerous. The air is too cold. It's too hot in the gym. The bathroom didn't have soft toilet paper. The hot dogs weren't long enough. The popcorn had too many kernels. Some old lady looked at me funny.
  11. It really should rotate every few years. Memphis fans would represent a lot more even if it was held every 3 years in Memphis.
  12. 07-08 Union City Tornadoes went 37-0 also. They beat Manassas for the championship and that was no small task. Humboldt and Lake County were no joke that year either. I saw the 96-97 PC team. They were huge for a A school. I have no doubt that UC, Humboldt, Lake County would have given that PC team trouble and any of those teams could've pulled out a win.
  13. TSSAA doesn't take any money until the post season. Now there are more district and regional tournaments than before.
  14. Probably Hillcrest could win this Region No idea
  15. Similar to Optional Schools in Memphis Shelby County. Kids can apply for any school they want in the district or out of district as long as they are in the Optional Program of that school. I was offered a job at Liberty in 2015. That was before they removed the principal and the superintendent did all the crazy stuff. I'm glad I didn't take that job. When Liberty first opened it was a great campus. The school seemed to thrive in multiple ways.
  16. The problem with Hillcrest is that they don't play anyone. Their schedule is really, really weak. They've played close games against bigger schools that are bad. I know those guards can play and they'll help get them through the regular season but when they get outside Memphis they've got to have more than those guards to get past sectionals.
  17. These are all in A. These are all in Memphis. Region 8 District 15 B. T. Washington High School (Memphis, TN) Compass School - Midtown High School (Memphis, TN) Manassas High School (Memphis, TN) Martin Luther King, Jr. Preparatory High School (Memphis, TN) Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering (Memphis, TN) Memphis Middle College High School (Memphis, TN) Soulsville Charter School (Memphis, TN) University High School - Memphis (Memphis, TN) District 16 City University School of Liberal Arts (Memphis, TN) Hillcrest High School (Memphis, TN) Memphis School of Excellence (Memphis, TN) Memphis School of Excellence - Cordova (Cordova, TN) Oakhaven High School (Memphis, TN) Westwood High School (Memphis, TN)
  18. This is a great experience. I got to coach in this tournament in 2015-16 (won the tournament) and 2016-17. Great gym and great atmosphere.
  19. Yes, they have beat or played some of the better teams in this area in the past few years. I don't think they are as good this year as they have been the past few years but they are legit. They have won 3 or 4 (in a row) of the National Homeschool tournaments.
  20. Yes, they probably are but not everyone, especially young guys, have the emotional capacity to be called names or be threatened without reacting. It takes a while to grow thick skin for these situations. By the time thick skin is grown they figure out it's not worth it and they leave.
  21. Players, fans, and coaches scream and critique at every level that's not an excuse you know that when you sign up. Fans pay to get in they should be allowed to voice their opinion and cheer on their team. Coaches have the right to "yell" they get paid to win or they lose their jobs... you will still wake up and go to your job the next day. Refs have seemed to develop rabbit ears now days. Facilities shouldn't alter how well you call a game. Also, you knew when signing up to officiate rather or not you job would allow to make contest or not. Respectfully Never paid mileage. Never was told I could be paid mileage. Was asked to umpire games for free for experience. People know what they're signing up for? Exactly why people are not signing up. What's your point? Coaches that yell and complain at the officials aren't coaching. They're being a distraction to their team. I've been a basketball coach for 15+years. Facilities do matter. When a high school baseball games has to use a portable mound and there is a lake in front of 2nd base so big you literally have to move the base to play it matters how the game is called. Or when you show up to a field and the grass is so high a ground ball wouldn't roll 10 feet it matters. When this is a regular occurrence it matters. I said people have to have the job schedule that allows them. Many people don't have they ability to ump due to work. With that reply I know you've never officiated a game in your life. Respectfully.
  22. If you haven't officiated/umped in the past 10 years then you have no idea how difficult it is. The starting cost can be high. The amount of time required for training, camps, gear isn't compensated for enough many times not at all. Then the drive time to games plus game time isn't worth $100 or less and listening to stupid fans, coaches, and now players yell, scream and critique even the stuff you get right. I umpired baseball in Shelby County for 2 years 15-16 and it wasn't worth it. Middle school games there was 1 umpire, high school games could be ok depending on who and where you're calling the game. And the facilities in some places are completely unsafe for players and don't get fixed for a whole season or longer. Also, keep in mind that you have to have a job that allows you to accept games that are assigned to you through your organization.
